The tiny fawn woke to cold breezes across his fur, and blinking the sleep from his eyes, saw white crystals decorating the forest around him. It was snowing in the forest, the first of many as winter came closer and closer... but unlike most fawn, the sight didn't excite him. Instead he sighed, heaving himself upward, and started off in search of a drier place to sleep til the snow passed on.
This was the first snow Sionnach had seen since his mother had gone... the season didn't hold pleasant memories for him, though he did remember the human family that saved him with fondness. Even they had left him though, in the middle of the woods to wander off on his own once he was old enough. He understood, in a way... humans and deer were not meant to be friends. And besides, he still had to find his mother. She had to be out there somewhere, and had to be looking for him too. It was the only option he'd accept of the many things that could have happened that night. She had just gotten lost, and he wandered off in search of her before she found her way back. It had to be possible, right?
As he walked, he looked around him... he saw young ones surrounded by their elders, or followed closely by their parents while they ran through the woods, jumping and playing in the snow. Were his really gone forever? He had no one to call his in the whole forest?
Unusually tired and pensive, Sionnach finally sat beneath an old oak, protected from the weather by its giant form. He watched a group of fawns bounding around the stones and between the trees, elder deer sitting or sleeping nearby to see to it that play-sparring stayed that way. Normally the temptation to join them would be impossible to ignore... but as he curled up beneath his sole guardian's massive branches, he decided all he wanted was for the snow to stop.
Story that popped in my head when I saw it was snowing in the forest. Sorry if its not too great. o_o
