I would like to thank all of you who took the time to become involved in The Fairytale, either through this blog or by interacting with my characters in The Forest. Without all of you the story could never have been laid to rest. Thank you!
I usually listen to some music while writing The Fairytale.
This song is a sort of theme for the story, so feel free to have a listen.
The Name
So a few of you managed to find the lil sleepy-head. Well done!
Now that you've got Hook's pictogram I'll keep it here for you.
I'm sure it will come in handy if you need to find him again.
Pocket full-o Poppies
So you've chosen not to heed the Gods have you? Hm, an interesting choice.
Still, I am loath to consider the consequences of this kindness.
Laid to Rest
Line, filled with so much kindness and understanding from her time within The Forest
has worked up the courage to face Sinker and lay her suspicions about Lynnet to rest.
Exile
The Forest has spoken, Line must leave for the greater good.
With the conclusion of The Fairytale there will be no further tasks.
The doctor turns back to the strange doe with brows furrowed. This was something new, and perhaps explained the strange behaviour this one had. The doctor was beginning to see that this Lynnet was perhaps not quite there and he needed to tread with caution.
Doctors can be mothers, but not ones like myself. He smiles kindly. A doctor must be a female to become a mom. Unfortunately, I am not!
Now...you say that you can only see your Hook when you dream? That must make you...sad, yes? To love your son but only see him when you sleep.
The doctor looks into her eyes, trying to catch a glimpse of what troubled the doe.
"Oh, I see...that is very sad. Being a mother is the happiest of things you see, I can't imaging being anything else! Dexterously Line selects several choice poppies and sets about weaving them into a garland. "That's right, I can only be with Hook when he and I are dreaming. I'm not sure why, I guess that's just how things are for now but I try not to be too sad. I look forward to being able to see him all the time. I do worry about him so, when I can't be there to watch out for him...but he has Sinker to keep an eye on him but a growing boy needs motherly affections." The doe's eyes are blue, and eerily glassy. She seems, even when talking and moving about the world to be very far away mentally.
The doctor's head was beginning to hurt. Something about this doe wasn't quite...right, but he couldn't, with all his experience, figure out what it was. Her song reminded him of a half-forgotten dream, and she spoke brightly enough, but it was as if it was all a speech that had been prepared and studiously memorized.
The doctor closes his eyes momentarily, trying to coax the headache away. The poor doe seemed to be living in a complete fantasy, believing that she had a son who somehow only lived in dreams. To avoid her fretting, he asks more questions, for the time playing along with her unreality.
Is this "Sinker" another son of yours? Hook's big brother? Perhaps he can help you bring Hook out of dreams and into your world. That way you could be a mother to him in the way you'd like to be. If not, the gods of this land might be able to help. I have seen little of their presence except for the common magics all deer here seem to know, but from what I've told, they're very powerful. I'm sure if you petitioned them, they could help you.
The doctor smiles, opening his eyes again. He tries to show well-meaning in that smile, but somehow it can't quite reach his eyes.
The happy blank smile fades from Line's eyes and she tilts her head, her face concerned. "Are you quite alright Doktor? You are not feeling ill I hope?" At the mention of Sinker a blush rises in her round cheeks. "Oh goodness no, Sinker is not my son. No he is.." Her blush deepens and she fiddles with the poppy chain bashfully. "Sinker is very deer to me. He looks after Hook and I, keeps away any of the others who are bad. She pouts, as though conflicted. "The Gods, Sinker does not talk of them very much but from the sounds of it I have no wish to deal with them any time soon, besides, Sinker is much too powerful for that to be any bother. It's simply a patter of patience on my part!" She smiles once again and despite any argument, nestles the poppy crown snugly on the Dok's brow. She beams, obviously quite pleased with her improvement.
The doctor raises his eyebrows to the poppy crown on his head, an ironic smile crossing his lips, then sneezing as a petal flutters down over his nose. The crown ends up tilted and he grins almost wolfishly at her.
There, much more fitting don't you think? A crooked crown for a crooked doctor!
He watches her face for awhile and then continues to talk, curious now as to the nature of this new character in her play.
So reading between the lines, Sinker would be, in this forest's vernacular, your mate? Does that mean he's able to travel between the dreaming world and this world? A handy skill that would be...
I'm curious about his beliefs on the gods here however. From what I can tell, it is unusual for a deer to feel that way in this forest. Most of them seem to revere the gods as their creators. I take it your Sinker feels otherwise? He must be very brave to hold such beliefs among such fervent followers.
Line seems quite pleased with her crown's reception, though the Dok's grin seem to unnerve her the slightest. This unpleasantness is soon dispelled with more talk of Sinker. "Oh well...I'm not so sure about this mate, at least, I am not so sure what that means. I love him, and he protects me and sees that I am happy, so he must love me as well. We are quite jolly, all things considered!" She pauses, taking her time to mull over the more complex questions. It seems her opinions of any topic outside of herself and her relations are underdeveloped, as though she has led a very sheltered, or very short life. "This world? I suppose, but I've never seen him other then dreaming, Hook and Sinker are the same in this regard you see. As for these Gods I honestly...well I'm not really sure. It is not my place to pry, and Sinker has mentioned them only briefly and never on pleasant terms." She frowns, as though the thought of Sinker's anger troubles her even when he is not present. "I got the impression they did him a great injustice once." She seems distracted by this thought, as though it prods at uncomfortable gaps in her consciousness.
Seeing the doe in discomfort, the doctor tries to bring her back into easy conversation. He's starting to pick up her habits and manners, and falls back into his old 'Doktor' routine. For now he will avoid asking the uncomfortable questions and stay where she seems more relaxed. He wants to learn more about her, but he doesn't yet want to scare her off.
I am glad that you have found love. It is indeed a rare gift to find true, and you must be lucky to have found one that cares for you and your little one so much. I can understand now that if Sinker feels that the gods of this part have done him an injustice, he would feel anger against them. Who knows, perhaps he has a more accurate view on them than the rest of the starry-eyed followers kneeling at their statues. I am not one to sway his bias either way, I have no feelings toward or against these gods, I only know that they seem to have brought me here, although for what reason I cannot fathom.
This last seems directed more toward himself than toward Lynnet, and for a moment he acquires an inward look, as though peering inside himself is the same as looking into a deep pit with no bottom. Gradually he turns back to her and gently inquires for more information.
So tell me my dear, do you think that it would be possible for me to meet Hook in dreams? I have always been more interested in the conscious and subconscious minds, it would be a curious project indeed to explore the unconscious!
He looks at her with bright eyes, willing her to open up, to realize on her own that it is only her that sees these fantasies. He doesn't want to hurt her, but he feels it is his doctor's duty to show her the truth.
Line nodded politely, a mite confused. The Doktor had said the Gods had brought him here and yet he did not know why. How sad. She thought to herself. To not know your purpose in life...I can't imagine what that would be like. Line could tell there was something troubling this Dok but she stopped herself asking, he was not some young fawn like Hook in need of comfort. He was a grown stag, and would surely rather sort his feelings out himself.
"To meet Hook? Hmm...I am not sure." It was true Line did not know if this Dok could enter dreaming, his mind seemed so closed off from her own. Secretly as well, Line did not want the Dok to be in the dreaming, that place was for her and her family alone. A selfishness she disguised as motherly concern. After all. She thought. Hook is so afraid of most...and there is a sharpness to this Doktor that would distress him. Best to leave well enough alone.
"I know that Hook sometimes comes to this forest, when he has been a good boy. Sinker keeps an eye on him of course, it is not always safe for a fawn to wander alone, but maybe you could find him and see him for yourself. I am sure he would warm up to you eventually." The doe smiled, entirely unaware of how irrational this answer would seem in the eyes of the Mind Doctor.
Well I promise to keep an eye out for him if he does enter the forest. While I find many of the deer here rather...tiring, the fawns amuse me with their antics. I enjoy their company.
The doctor smiled and rose from his place among the poppies. He shook himself off, but was careful to keep his head steady in order to not disturb the poppy crown.
Can I escort you anywhere in the forest my dear? I confess that I would like to go see if there are any patients I need to visit, but I wouldn't mind bringing you along if there is anywhere you would like to visit. The pond is really quite lovely if you're interested.
He does genuinely want to be kind to this strange doe, but he is also distracted, wanting to return to work where there may be a solution. He knows this doe is long lost.
Line smiles politely, if distantly. "No good Dok, I think I will nap for a bit here in the poppies. I am quite tired suddenly." Curling up in her flowerbed she yawns, eyes already fluttering. "If I should see Hook, I will say hello to him for you. Enjoy your walk, Mind Doktor." And with that, and a small puff of darkness, Line is gone.
Much as I enjoy Line as a character, and that I think Sinker is a wonderful villain, I have to vote for the final option, to slay Line and destroy Sinker.
The dead should really remain dead. Life is much better that way.
Bumping because a) we have a tie lol and b) I'd realllly like to finish this before school gets crazy busy so if you've been reading The Fairytale and enjoyed, please vote, you'll be super awesome.
Serenai: Aw that's ok, thank you for the bump. I really appreciate it!
Ocean: Thank you! I've added your choice to the tally. I know the choices are really hard >_< but if I had put a totally happy ending, nobody would choose anything else :U lol
I've decided, mainly due to the rather limited votes, that I'll leave the task open for another day. This means the task will be closed sometime Wednesday. The final chapter should be posted the following weekend. Thank you very much for all of you who have voted, your participation means I can finally finish The Fairytale!
