- Cygnus -
The light of the moon flowed over the world like spilled paint. It bathed some areas in more light than others. In particular, the starry sky bathed its mirror in a brighter light than anything else. The sky was a narcissist after all, and loved to see itself in the reflection of the forest's crystal clear pond. It fancied the lilies and fish to be beautiful additions to itself, and enjoyed when the insignificant animals traced its constellations in the pool. It may even have gotten some sick joy out of the creatures believing the reflected stars were food, only to be disappointed to find they were not.
Another being floated in the water this evening, preening himself. If the sky grew jealous of anything at all, it was such a perfect mix of wild grace. Despite his imperfections, his gangly nature, many viewed the male as a thing of beauty to behold. Some believed him to be a thing of fear, and that indeed is what kept the sky from smiting him. His disproportions were very apparent, and different things all too often cause fear in the minds of others.
Cygnus, as the swan stag was known, was all too content to share the pond with the sky. He often admired its beauty in the late night and liked to fancy that he was the son of the constellation he had been named after. From his travels, he had heard of many great kings of man associated with that constellation, though he only dreamed of ruling his own land.
The beast that was part deer and part swan reared up from the water, flapping his giant wings in an attempt to stretch them out. It was a motion that made him appear triumphant, even a bit too proud of himself. He would not feel that way, though, and was ignorant to others' views of him unless he was outright scoffed at for his actions. Luckily, it was the midnight hour and the only judgment came from the sky, who merely put on a smug expression as it watched the beast who marred its mirror with his presence.
The halfling had by now made it to the shoreline. He hoisted his strong, feathered body out of the water and planted his thin legs squarely on the ground. A quick shake and settling of wings signaled that he was done with his midnight swim. The being craned his long neck around to preen the spot between his shoulders before he pulled his hooves from the mud to move further up the soft slope toward the blue bowl.
As Cygnus moved up on the bank, his black eyes spotted something at the forest's edge, watching him. He rose to his full height to watch the shadow warily.

I've figured to thrown in Dove, as they both have design references to birds. ^u^

In the late evening, Dove mainly spent her time watching the eager stillness of the pond when very few deer decided to visit the never-sleeping fauna. This was when she felt peace, quiet, and solemn self-complacency. It was a feeling to enjoy; during the day, she chronically had to move to avoid much larger, seemingly threatening individuals. She disliked them for their size, and deep inside, punished herself for judging them. Maybe they'd cuddle better than fawns...if she knew what cuddling with a fawn was like.
However, this visit to the pond seemed to dance in a sense of false ennui. Seating herself on the overlooking bank, she watched what looked like a normal swan - Odd, don't swans visit here in the summer? she thought to herself. Upon further...well, staring, she realized it was not a swan, but a deer. Oh! How silly. He carried a swan's grace, but was a male. Ah, never mind that. I feel horrible for staring for such a long time, now. Better go apologize.
When she stood up, just as feeble and inaudible as an owls flight, she watched the swan emerge from the water. Oh, he's actually.. very pretty, in a way. she giggled quietly. She gazed at him with eager eyes to learn more, even curiosity - then scolded herself again. Constantly, she had to keep reminding herself of her manners...oh, the luck.
Dove approached him softly, making a note to move in a gyre so that they would possibly meet each other headfirst. Sadly, her plans failed when the swan glanced at her in vigilance, and she had no choice but to quickly turn away in an attempt to make it seem like she was headed to someplace yonder (as she did for a majority of her time.)
He blinked, then between long
"Don't let me frighten you off." He spoke, abrupt in his manner but quiet in his voice. It was almost urgent, the timing in which he chose to speak to Dove. It was strange enough to jump to that conclusion, as he usually didn't. Maybe it was her demeanor that stimulated his brain to immediately jump toward that thought and away from his usual mindset.
The stag tried and failed to take in her scent as he watched the doe for signs of mutual contact. The wind was blowing the wrong way tonight.

The unimpressive looking antelope weaved her way through the mixture of trees and foliage as she followed her nightly ritual of a drink at the pond before bedtime. She always preferred to go out at night when most other creatures were already asleep, it gave her a sense of comfort as it temporarily quenched her anxiety.
Her steps were light, deliberate and soundless as she moved closer to her destination. The trees that lined the edge of the forest before the large clearing around the pond provided excellent cover for the small doe as she scanned the area for any creatures still awake at this hour; this is when she spotted him, a massive strange looking stag. The odd mixture if mammalian and bird features intrigued V but not enough to shake her from her frozen state as she simply stood there watching the creatures awkward yet somehow elegant movements. Her small frame shaking as her muscles readied themselves to spring into action and flee should the large male approach her she stood awkwardly behind the trunk of a skinny tree just big enough to hide most of the tiny body.
Fortune had it that Cygnus
The water lapped at the shore, creating a peaceful background whisper. More crickets played a concert with their legs, a song of yearning for mates they might find this evening. A few of them might escape Cygnus' hungry mouth, if they did leap away from him grazing. At least, that is what he would make it look like so as not to scare anyone. He swept back and forth with that long, thin neck of his in time with the lapping shoreline. It would disguise his sounds enough for his purpose. All the while, the stag kept one ear trained toward the doe in the woods.
She stared curiously at the
Keeping her ears turned towards the white stag she lowered her small head and began gently lapping up the refreshing liquid, every sip making more rings appear as her mouth disturbed the once immaculate surface of the pond. Even though the creature behind her didn't appear threatening V was always weary and very paranoid around others, this was clearly visible as her body betrayed any attempts she ever made of trying to appear relaxed. The muscles underneath her flesh quivered excitedly and she flinched at every sound regardless of how small.
Each bug caught caused a
Cygnus resumed his feeding for a brief time before he felt full. Surprisingly enough, the being required very little food if he did not plan on going on the wing. Those wings took up most of his energy, as they were the most massive thing on him and needed the most strength to get off the ground.

V never ate much but decided it was best to simply reply with a gentle nod " Yes." she spoke softly almost as if whispering, a gentle murmur merely passing by. Trying to appear calm in an effort to not offend the stranger she now had spoken to for the first time the antelope made her way to one of the weeping wilows that lined the rim of the pond; she loved laying underneath their drooping branches as she watched them gently sway in the breeze. Her small body delicately resting in the soft grassy earth she awkwardly looked away from him when she caught herself once again staring at his strange form, her cheeks turning slightly rosy in embarrassment.
It almost amused the stag to
Cygnus stared at himself in the pool. He puzzled, though the look on his face seemed serene. Was it really okay that he made others nervous? As if to kiss his reflection, the male moved his head closer to the water... only to shatter his image as he soothed his long throat with even longer gulps of the clear liquid. He once again stared at the water, counting stars that floated like lily flowers on its surface.
Noticing that her jumpy
She let out a sigh as she stared blankly ahead with her vision fuzzy from relaxation, a small delicate yawn gracing her thin muzzle. "It sure is nice out tonight isn't it..?" she whispered towards the other being in hopes of sparking some kind of conversation to break the stale silence that felt so suffocating right now. For her the pond was a place to relax and feel good and the current awkward atmosphere was enough to push her towards trying to socialize more. Ever since the small doe met her friend Nevé she had become slightly more outgoing but was still painfully shy around others.
Her voice floated to him,
The stag shifted so that he leaned away from her, his head curving around to look at the curtain of willow whips she hid behind. His demeanor was all comfortable and laziness. "Is that why you come here at night?" he smiled, questioning gently.

The tree line became more sparse as his hooves guided the male near the Pond. Slowing down to a trot as the view opened up in from of him. Phobos took a moment to stop and breathe in the uphill scents. Human nostrils flaring before continuing his procession to the Pond. Pupil-less, emerald eyes flicked about. A merry tune whistled from his lips, cut off short when a figure suddenly seemed to rise from the still waters.
Wariness caused him to quickly steer towards the willow nearest to the shore. Was the figure a threat? Curiosity won out as Phobos stepped out from the curtain of branches. "Ah, hello?"
V gently noded her head, she
By the sound of the voice she could tell it was another male and this did nothing to put her at ease instead the small antelope retreated further into her shell as she pulled her neck tightly back against her body making her head rest on the inner part connecting the neck to her chest.
As much effort as he had put
"Seems that more than one of us likes to enjoy some exercise in the evening." He chuckled upon getting a whiff of the male's sweat. Cygnus was generally surprised, now, that so many other deer decided it would be a good idea to come out in the middle of the night for anything. He let one eye and ear drift to the little female nearby, noting her fear, before focusing again on Phobos.

V started to slowly push herself up into a more action-friendly position just in case she felt the need to flee from this confrontation. The new deer that had intruded upon their somewhat peaceful encounter now just stood there without uttering any words at all and this made the tiny doe even more weary of his intentions.
Being very careful to remain as small as she physically could she began to move away from the two males. Her posture was very awkward and defensive, her tail tucked tightly beneath her body, her neck pulled in close to her torso and her back slightly arched, when she walked it made her look very goofy but this strange way of standing always made the tiny creature feel more secure so she didn't think too much about how it looked. Managing to remember her manners she looked at the winged deer and quickly nodded before scurrying away to a safer location.
