Yes, this is a good start to having a character, it's very cute! I don't know if it's more common for deer to have human faces here, but all of the deer in the game itself do have humanoid faces. It is up to you what your character looks like though.

Roleplay on the site is turn-based. Everyone agrees on which characters they want to write about, and take turns telling a story with them, usually writing a few paragraphs at a time. You can look in some of the threads that show up on the front page and read them to get a feel for what is common. If you have more questions about it I will do my best to answer.
