The air carried something ominous, the okapi could taste it on his metallic blue tongue as he paced impatiently through the trees. Everyone he passed became a mere blur in the reflection of his aureate irises, he didn't stop to greet them. The thin foliage's exposiveness made him nervous, so he continued trotting without a goal. In the distance he spotted a still, recognizable form. It was someone he knew but didn't remember meeting. His own childhood had forever been a mystery to him, kept his past in the dark. Calmed by seeing something familiar, the okapi decided to lay down next to his old friend, and relieved he rested his head upon him. The steady breathing and the rhythm of his heart beat soothed him, and he slowly drifted away into sleep as well.

In a dream of thick vegetation, vivid flashes of contrasting stripes. A nightmare he had always had. Ferns towered above his head and the earth beneath his dainty hooves felt damp and wet. He tried desperately to focus on the black and white object in front of him, but as he lost sight of it, everything closed in on itself in a great typhoon motion and turned dark. That's when he woke up.

He kept having this dream, and always would he wake up with his mouth as dry as sand. He moved towards the pond to clench his thirst, waded through the water until its surface lapped at his underbelly. He eagerly drank the clear, fresh liquid. Once done, he glanced down at the reflection, paying no attention to the milky clouds surrounding his form. His aureate eyes widened as he noticed a peculiar stripe on his backside. Although an okapi, he had lacked their most striking feature. He felt pride over this new discovery, so he walked with his head held high out of the water. The droplets ran off of his oily, velvety coat, leaving no traces.

Brilliant scarlet mixed with tints of yellow, colors on the ground amongst moving shadows. The tree crowns rustled in the wind and the bright light their thin forms let in blurred his amber vision. He loathed the birch, yet this is where he was stationed. He had caught a glimpse of his dream, the striped object. Feeling the dry, sandy earth beneath his obsidian hooves as he trotted, the hot sun burning his dark mahogany skin, he still kept going. He called out, a howl heavy with melancholy, loneliness, longing. He started squinting his eyes as he tried to focus despite the blinding rays. He had reached the reason he had come for and now gazed at it. Creamy lines spread out across a copper shaded back. At first he was awestruck because of the many stripes it carried, though his thoughts soon changed as he realized they were not what he had expected. Anger and envy clouded his mind. He clenched his jaws and pulled his dark lips back, revealing a perfect row of white teeth and flesh colored gums. How dare they have it? It doesn't belong to them. The bongo just looked back at him, unfazed. The okapi started moving nervously, making sharp turns on the spot as he flicked his large ears and whipped his short tail. Unsure of what to do about it. But the bongo just continued looking back at him with sunlit hazel eyes. Conflicted, the heat finally over powered his will, and he started stumbling towards the pond. He collapsed at its shore, dreaming of his emotional encounter.

Spiraling and spinning on graceful hooves, scarring the earth. Having joined his crimson friend in a game of chase, the okapi laughed himself breathless. They leaped into the air then dove down again as fast, for what goes up must come down. His ribs heaved from exaustion and the adrenaline made him tremble. They decided to find a place to settle down, so his friend led them to the hill over looking the fallen graveyard and ancient ruins. The okapi made various attempts to get closer, to touch, but they were only rejected, the stag would only pull away and move out of reach. At times like these his golden gaze would go blank and his chest would tighten, yet it didn’t hinder him from always trying harder no matter what. Knowing the truth yet supressing it deep within. He ealed closer, shivering lips. S-STAY, WHY ARE YOU-

Blue giant’s eyes are on him, watching, listening, knowing.
