was at a loss. A few days ago, he found that he could not cast effective enchantments where he could before. He was growing restless and often paced around the forest. When he was near another deer, felt an urge to jab his antlers into a nearby tree. In all his years of existence, he had never experienced a period when the enchantments he cast did not show up on another deer.
After wandering around the forest in agitation
’s attention turned toward the idols. Prayer tended to calm him when he was feeling uneasy, and he often knelt at the idols for hours on end. He reverently approached the old statues and opened himself to the Source. The Twin Gods often appeared as separate entities, but they were of the same energies. They were essentially a single being that expressed itself in two aspects that brought balance to this realm.
Suddenly, a sleeping fawn with one of Gods’ symbols appeared near the idols.
tentatively rose to all fours and gazed at the fawn. There were many stags and fawns that bore the symbols of the Gods that roamed the forest, and the other deer regarded them with the deepest respect. While they were not gods, these creatures bore the Gods’ mark and could very well be divine emissaries. In any case,
took the fawn as a sign and casted the divine pelt on it. To
’s surprise, the enchantment held. He then tried casting a regular pelt enchantment on the fawn, and this spell held as well. He ran to another sleeping deer and tried the same sequence. However, after the divine pelt wore off, a normal pelt spell did not work.
paused for a moment. Perhaps this was a message for him to draw closer to the Gods. While he did not feel particularly distant from them,
recalled the recent events in which the Gods changed his day-to-day experience. A few months ago, he woke to an empty forest. It was only after prayer that he was able to see his fellow deer. Perhaps, after all his years in existence, he was being called into a spiritual vocation of prayer and quiet reflection. Or maybe he was being prepared for an even closer communion that would change his conscious experience forever. Something similar happened to a young doe before many, many years ago, and she was never seen in the forest since.
The old stag mulled these things over in his mind, and shivered. He trotted back to the idols and prayed until he fell in exhaustion, the dust becoming one with his body once more.
