Befriending Rivalries

this isnt exactly how it went. i made it a bit spicier >D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sun shone high over the waters. A smiling, red mask hovered just about the water. The tan stag lapped up several mouthfuls. Thirsty day today... he thought.

Mercutio raised his head and looked out into the deeper end, water trickling off his chin. The koi swam elegantly under the vibrant lotus and paper thin lily pads. He shook his head to get rid of the dripping water, and trotted away.

What shall I do on this fine day? There has been not a sniff of a familiar face since the day before. He pricked his ears and focused on his sense of smell. Well well well... I have spoken too soon.

He bolted for the Ruins, hopping and skipping the entire way. He came to the outskirts of the stone structures. Mercutio snuck around, and looked around a corner. There he was. He smirked devilishly and made his way for a sleeping deer. After a few moments, Mercutio bore a pelt spell. He quietly snuck up to where the corner was, and when the deer was in sight, cast the spell.

The stag bolted to his feet after he figured out what was happening. He angrily sneezed off the pelt while catching that familiar, insane laugh. "Mercutio!"

Mercutio was already running like a mad man for the hill with the fairy ring. He heard his name several times, but he realized that the voice wasn't moving. And soon his name stopped coming. Mercutio stopped at his hill and turned around.

A hysterical smile came across his tan face, "Oh, brave Tybalt, look what foolishness you've brought upon yourself!" He yelled to him.

Tybalt rammed his great antlers against the bars of the cage. He was trapped. The cage door swung shut after he accidentally ran into it. "Damn this cursed thing!" He rammed several more times. "Someone let me out!"

Mercutio laughed and reared up. "This is the price you pay for such a temper!"

Tybalt growled, "When I get out of here I shall ring your neck!"

"Oh, your words, they frighten me so!" He did a little fake cowering, and laughed some more.

A few deer were gathering and listening to their bickering from afar. Mercutio and Tybalt both noticed. Tybalt became a little embarrassed, and stopped yelling to Mercutio. He continued to ram the bars in hopes of loosening something.

The tan stag skipped down his hill and trotted over to the cage. "Oh Lord Tybalt, do you wish to be free?"

"Yes. I would like nothing more. Is that not obvious?" He flattened his ears at him and kept his head low.

"Say 'Free me, Oh high and mighty Mercutio'!"

"I shall say nothing of the sort!" Tybalt growled.

"Hmm... Fine then. Just say the magic word."

Tybalt raised an eyebrow slightly and paused. "... Please?"

"Almost. Take away the L."

Tybalt raised both eyebrows now. "Peas? What does that-"

"Peas and what else?"

"... Carrots?"

"There you are. And don't forget the dandilions on top."

"You are a cruel, insane deer, Mercutio."

"If you wish to be free, you will have to say it." Mercutio blinked his odd eyes.

Tybalt sighed angrily... "Let me out of this cage... Peas and... carrots... with dandilions on top..." He flattened his ears again and blushed slightly.

"Very good." Mercutio picked the lock open and opened the door. "Was that so difficult?"

Tybalt glared at his rival. "Thank you, Mercutio."

Mercutio smiled wide, "'Twas nothing."

Tybalt lowered his antlers, "'Twas nothing indeed." He slowly moved forward into Mercutio.

The tan stag backed away as Tybalt moved, "What is this?"

Tybalt said nothing, but somehow maneuvered Mercutio into the cage. He slammed the door shut, causing it to lock again.

Mercutio yelped, "Tybalt, what is this?"

"There was absolutely no need for such insult, o Merry One." Tybalt raised his head and stared Mercutio down.

Mercutio paused, then sighed. "That is what this is about? So you wish for an apology."

"Indeed."

"Indeed..." Mercutio cleared his throat, "I do admit, I was a bit loopy then. I apologize for my behavior. Perhaps I won't do it again."

"I do not believe that, but the apology is accepted in any case."

Mercutio smiled, for once it was warmly. He paused, as if waiting for something. "... Well?"

"Well what?"

"Will you let me out?"

"Do you wish to be out?"

One of Mercutio's black eyes twitched. "I see what this is. Yes, indeed I do wish to be out. Please."

Tybalt, shrugged slightly and picked the lock, deciding not to bother. Mercutio stepped out cautiously. "You are shrewd, sir Tybalt."

"Aye. And you are cruel."

They glared at each other for a few moments. Nothing seemed to happen, time stood still. They didn't even breathe, they were so focused. Mercutio finally bowed his head and turned away. He walked over to the Pond again.

A few hours passed. The sun hung a little to the west now, just about ready to set. Mercutio sat himself down on the bridge, looking out at the waters. He noticed something out of the corner of his eye. It was Tybalt again, but he looked calm.

He rose to meet his rival, and nodded his head in greeting. Tybalt bowed a little before joining him on the bridge. No words were spoken while they sat on the bridge. There were little deer there. One sat inbetween the two deer kindly. Mercutio paid no mind to him. Tybalt's feelings were uncertain.

A nameless stag came up to them, wishing to play. Tybalt eagerly got up and met the stag. He lowered his antlers, and challenged him. Mercutio stood up to watch this, and his spirits lifted as he saw the nameless stag completely ignore Tybalt's antlers.

Mercutio approached the two stags. Tybalt continued to challenge him until the other one started dancing. The tan stag let out a deep-voiced laugh, "What ho! As if you're not even there!" He continued to laugh.

Tybalt flattened his ears once more, at both the stag and Mercutio. Mercutio saw his desire for a battle, and trotted over close to the edge of the river.

"If it is a match you want, I shall oblige." He offered.

Tybalt smirked slightly and trotted over to Mercutio. "Your challenge is met."

The two bowed, and soon lowered antlers. They reared, kicked, clashed antlers to antlers in a stange bone against metal shing. Mercutio's golden antlers shone brilliantly in the low sunlight, while Tybalt's giant white antlers blended with the ever reddening sky.

For minutes this battle lasted. They continued, moving closer and closer to the stream. They had struck antlers once more, and now it was a battle of pushing. Tybalt was obviously stronger than Mercutio, and pushed him away with a little struggle.

Mercutio tried to regain his footing, but a loose stone gave way under his foot and he fell into the water. Tybalt rushed over to the edge, looking for his opponent. Mercutio scrambled back to dry land with a gasp. He got to his feet and shook off the water. He soon realized that his mask had fallen off, it was still in the water.

Tybalt looked at Mercutio's exposed face, and Mercutio stared back. The large-antlered stag smiled, causing the tan stag to smile. They both started to chuckle, which turned to a laugh. Mercutio roared in his giddy, insane laughter while Tybalt let out his rare loud laughter.

The two stopped. Tybalt stooped down into the water and grabbed the metallic mask. He shook off the water and threw it to Mercutio. The black eyed stag snatched his mask and put it on perfectly.

The two bowed. "Well played." Tybalt stated.

"As to you." Mercutio returned.

Mercutio realized his hollow antlers were full of water, and craned his head backward to spill it out. He then bowed again. "Until next time, my Lord."

Tybalt nodded. "Until next time."

The two rivals parted ways. It seemed like they weren't just rivals, but also showed some signs of friendship. But the two were still star-crossed by a longshot. It would take a miracle for them to get along completely.

Miracles weren't too uncommon here.
