Animated Movies...

quadraptor's picture
Hey guys, I have two sections for this: Old Old Old Animated Movies, and Animal Animated Movies. I'm looking for new movies of both to add to my collection

---------------

Old Old Old Animated Movies

I'm planning on picking up a few that we used to own on beta tape. They of course have these on Youtube but I'd rather own the DVDs of them (I know most of them are on DVD already). Below are clips from each movie:

The Flight of Dragons
Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland
The Sea Prince and the Fire Child
The Jetsons Movie (not one like the three above but I watched it all the time as a kid)

Let me know if there are any you are familiar with. I know I saw The Last Unicorn in stores and found out that was another one like above.

--------------

Animal Animated Movies

I'm also looking for good animated animal movies. I'd rather have movies that are an adventure or where the main character learns a lesson (Bambi, Brother Bear, ect.), not ones that are comedies and have animal jokes (Over The Hedge, Madagascar, Hoodwinked, ect.)

Below is an incomplete list of animal movies I've seen, but I'm always looking for more.

Bambi
Bambi 2
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Brother Bear
Finding Nemo
All Dogs go to Heaven
Happy Feet
Balto
The Lion King
Secret of the NIMH
Land Before Time
Fox and the Hound
Lady and the Tramp
Princess Mononoke
Dumbo
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book
The Aristocats
Oliver and Company

So anything you know right off hand that was a good movie and not just a comedy, please let me know.

Let me think...most of the

Let me think...most of the movies that I normally would suggest have already been listed XD
The only ones that are coming to mind are "Fox and the Hound", "Lady and the Tramp", "Land Before Time" and "The Secret of NIMH"
Laruna's picture

The Lion King, Balto, and

The Lion King, Balto, and Princess Mononoke (if that counts). :3 And you may like Fantasia 2000 (just for this segment).
quadraptor's picture

Custard - I've never seen

Custard - I've never seen Watership Down, but I've heard it was really good.

Haru - Yep, seen all of those. I used to be a huge Land Before Time fan, I still have a poster hanging on the other side of my closet door Eye

Laruna - Forgot to add those three. I actually liked Balto despite it being a wolf movie, and Princess Mononoke was really good. I also totally dig the original Fantasia, never got to see Fantasia 2000, so that'll be another one to add to my 'pick up list'. Thanks.

Hmmm, I must track this (: I

Hmmm, I must track this (:
I know you're looking for the movies, but... I used to love The Animals of Farthing Woods series (even though I prefered the comic books rather than series). Now you can find -most probably- all its episodes on YouTube.
trigger_mortis's picture

Felidae and The Plague Dogs

Felidae and The Plague Dogs are both very good animated movies. The Plague Dogs is actually written by the same guy who did Watership Down, so that should give you an idea of quality.

I'd also suggest looking up Animal Farm in movie and book format. Smiling

Finally, if you're feeling very in need of childish nostalgia, the Beatrix Potter shows are always fun.

Estme and Trigger - Thank

Estme and Trigger - Thank you! I'll look into those *adds to the list*

Only thing I can think of is

Only thing I can think of is Ferngully. (You can tell that Avatar was influenced by it.)

I think my sister and I wore out our VHS of Rescuers Down Under. I remember watching it so much as a kid. |D
quadraptor's picture

I really liked Rescuers Down

I really liked Rescuers Down Under. I always hated the part with the big syringe though.

And Ferngully was a good one, too. I haven't watched it in a long time, so I should totally get a copy of it. Thanks for reminding me about that one!

Dumbo, 101 Dalmatians, The

Dumbo, 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, Robin Hood (sort of an anthro one...but it has adventure), Oliver & Company, and maybe Dinosaur (just throwing this one out, it's sort of like Happy Feet).

There needs to be more animal movies and I'm not talking about that wolf one coming out. They didn't even bother to research how a wolf's life is. The hierarchy isn't like what the movie has it is at all :/
quadraptor's picture

Mhmm, I've seen all of those

Mhmm, I've seen all of those except for Dinosaur. Never got around to watching it but I was curious, so I added it to the list.

101 Dalmatians and Robin Hood were two we watched all the time much like The Rescuers Down Under, Balto, and Lady and the Tramp. I actually would like another copy of Robin Hood, so I added that to my 'pick up list'. That was a great movie.

I love these blogs you make,

I love these blogs you make, Quad :'D I'm getting a nice assortment of both music and movies 8D

I'll definitely watch The Sea Prince and the Fire Child, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Felidae, Plague Dogs and Watership Down, though the last two ones looked a bit depressing. xD but they're probably worth watching. They looked different.

For recommendations, I have Jungledyret Hugo (it's originally Danish though, and I'm not really sure if it's easy to find in English. I didn't even think there was an English version at all, but Wikipedia says so xD and also you have to see the two first movies, I haven't seen the others but I'm guessing they're not as good as the original movies.), Quest for Camelot (yes, I know this one is childish but it's so cute xDD), aand The Moomins :'D (originally Finnish, but these should be in English. There are several movies, all of them listed at the bottom of that Wikipedia-link. These also may be a bit difficult to find, but they're worth it! Watched this all the time when I was a kid :'D)

Sorry for mentioning Scandinavian movies, but I AM Norwegian myself, and they are really good movies^^ also if you haven't watched The Emperor's New Groove, then you should. D8
quadraptor's picture

As long as I can find

As long as I can find versions with subtitles/captions, I'd be alright. And I totally love scandinavian works (huge fan of scandinavian metal) so it's an absolute honor to get these recommendations. Thank you for the suggestions!
Pegasicorn's picture

I'm getting reminded of

I'm getting reminded of movies I haven't seen in awhile or wouldn't have thought of. =D This blog definitely has my stamp of approval.
*loves on Disney's Robin Hood*
Hubalaboo's picture

Oh, I remember watching so

Oh, I remember watching so many of these... <3 Brings back memories.
As for suggestions:
Night on the Galactic Railroad, an old animated japanese movie (it's got subs, don't worry) that's very sad and thought-provoking. The main characters are anthropomorphic cats. It's based on a famous novel by Kenji Miyazawa.
The Secret of Kells, it's not really an animal movie or an old old movie but it's pretty darn beautiful and fun to watch. There's some snippets of it on youtube.
And if you like Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke) movies...
The Cat Returns, another japanese animated movie including cats but it's much newer.
My Neighbour Totoro, bawww such an adorable and sweet movie.
Actually every Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki movie is worth the watch. XD

For all the japanese movies above I highly suggest watching them in japanese with subtitles. The english dubs always seem to tear the movie apart for me. Sad

I'll add more if I think of them. Smiling

<3<3!
Need to track this, since I have been looking for some "new" old cartoons to check out too... Can´t help but to love them... I collect them too, mostly the non-Disney-stuff. =)

Uh... can´t think of anything smart to suggest though for now, since my favourites have been said already. I can just support watching Watership down, Plague dogs, The last unicorn and Animal farm (there´s also a lot newer live-action version of it, but I didn´t like it, the cartoon looked childish but felt a lot better to me). Felidae was good to watch too even though there were some minor thing which bugged me, and old Don Bluth-films are awesome too. <3
Hm, nobody seemed to suggest "an American tail" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvZfEQ_pMdg ) yet, old Don Bluth also... not as good as Nimh, but cute still. =) Wouldn´t recommend any of the sequels, though, I remember there are plenty of those. <_<
Oh, also "Rock&rule" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kPP45npLaQ ) is actually a lot better that the trailer might seem, though it´s quite... different movie. You might love or hate it, I was surprised to like it after watching. =)
....you might also want to check out "The ringing bell of Chirin" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IFbBZDJang ) even though there´s a wolf in there, it´s actually a quite tragic story.
Also, of course everything from studio Ghibli&Hayao Miyazaki is recommended, especially if you liked Mononoke, you might want to watch also Nausicaa ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wSba9hwCaU ) if you haven´t already.
...and almost forgot, few movies based on Osamu Tezuka´s old manga of a little unicorn Unico ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8uoogTc-R4&feature=related ) were cute as far as I remember.

Hope you like some of these, I´ll also be checking out atleast "The Sea Prince and the Fire Child", it looks kind of interesting. =)

Oww I don't have any

Oww I don't have any suggestions, Plague dogs has already been suggested but yes, that is a really awesome one <3..
And I just need to track this for selfish purposes o_o Yay animations! <333 XDD

/didn't look to see what was

/didn't look to see what was suggested so sorry if I double |D/

The Last Unicorn
The Land Before Time (first one only)
Rainbow fish (;; nostalgia, might not like that one as an adult though)
if I think of more I'll throw them in |3
This account is a biography holder. Nothing more.

Oh my god! Flight of

Oh my god!

Flight of Dragons!! I haven't seen that thing in ageeess!! -starts to hum the song-
Quite a list there quad I hope you get everything you're looking for. I can't think of anything to suggest, looks like you have a great list already.

edit: Actually, sort of unrelated, but have you seen the "Dark Crystal"? It is worth picking up, for being such an original movie. I saw it when I was very young, and it scared the crap outta me XDD;;, but now when I watch it, it sort of brings back that feeling of being that small and wondering "how they did that".

edit edit: It's official I am dumb.
What about "The Secret of Nimh"?

Dammit. Just wrote a long

Dammit. Just wrote a long post, and accidentally closed the window didn't I? Oh well, hope I can remember it all @-@;

Hedgehog in the Fog is a film everyone should see (and one of Hayao Miyazaki's favourites, incidentally!) While we're on the subject of Miyazaki- most of films, while not having animals as the main characters, do have environmental themes; it might not be as overt as the already mentioned Princess Mononoke & Nausicaa as it in My Neighbour Totoro & Spirited Away, but it's there, definitely. & 'Ponyo' is a tiny little fish, shes a little fish from the deep blue sea, ;D

When you mention 'Nostalgic' a lot of people in the UK think of things like The Clangers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l2AblgHy1w), Bagpuss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mXPmTpY4Ss), The magic roundabout (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3DcChXNyYQ) & Paddington (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=529Lr8i_EB0) I'm not sure how available these are in the US, but there are the youtube video's ^-^

Seconding 101 Dalmatians, Princess Mononoke, Secret of the NIMH, Beatrix Potter & Watership Down muchly though ♥

--Deep Breath--

Hubalaboo - I'm familiar with Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki's works. My Neighbor Totoro is always going to be our favorite, and we liked a bunch of the others like Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, and Pom Poko. I have yet to see a few of them so I'll have to add them to the list. Thanks for the suggestions, too!

Spyrre - I remembered An American Tail but forgot to mention I had seen it. That was pretty good movie. I always wanted to get "The Ringing Bell of Chirin", was very interested in watching it. And like I mentioned, I've seen Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki's stuff but need to see a few of them. I never got around to seeing Nausicaa. Thank you!

Seele - Thanks, I haven't seen Plague Dogs yet but it sounds interesting!

Vandettta - I'm planning on getting The Last Unicorn soon since I can find it easily. Like I mentioned I used to be a huge Land Before Time fan, had nearly all of the movies. I'll look into Rainbow Fish, too.

CelticMystress - I haven't seen Dark Crystal but it looked like one that was related to Flight of Dragons. I'll take a look into it. I really loved Flight of Dragons, I thought it was a great story and I loved the animation. I mentioned I've seen Secret of Nimh before, though I don't remember a whole lot about it.

Kaoori - I never got to see those two but I'll look into them. I did love Who Framed Roger Rabbit though, that was a great movie.

Mordecai - Thanks, I'm not familiar with any of those so it'll be good to look into sometime.

I'll get my list updated soon. What I plan to do is bold everything I've seen but I want copies of so I'll know what I haven't seen yet.

A movie I always liked was

A movie I always liked was Rock-a-Doodle. It's a Don Bluth movie (Fievel/Secret of NIMH/All Dogs go to Heaven/etc.) It's not one of the more well known ones but it's a classic to me (and it's based off a Chaucer tale). Kinda cheesey, early 90's but it's all about finding yourself/your strengths blablabla. It was my favorite as a little babychild. Maybe I just liked the Elvis allusions. xD
quadraptor's picture

Pega - *nodnodnod* I have a copy of it, been meaning to watch it again. That was a pretty good one, though I don't remember a whole lot about what happens other than the beginning and the end.

I need to pop it in sometime and watch once again.

Custard - Yeah, I used to own most of them on VHS before DVD started coming out. I would always fast forward through the songs, though XD
quadraptor's picture

Rewatched The Pagemaster

Rewatched The Pagemaster tonight. Macaulay Culkin getting eaten by the dragon was always my favorite part. I forgot how short of a movie it was, but now I have the urge to go rent books from the Library XD

I looked at Target for some Studio Ghibli movies, and they had Castle in the Sky but it was $20. I was hoping I could find a cheap $5-10 movie from my list, but didn't find anything. They had Robin Hood too but again $20.

Ah well, I think I want to get Flight of Dragons or Little Nemo before I get the more recent movies...

Edit - Actually I looked up Little Nemo on eBay and found they have copies for $6 including shipping. Got one on the way now, so anyone looking for this movie totally pick it up there!

I looked up Flight of Dragons but it was around $25-30 without shipping :\

They're... honestly a little

They're... honestly a little borderline "girly" and a little bit older, but they're very Disney-like; so if someone hasn't already mentioned them (lol I haven't read through comments):

The Swan Princess
Thumbelina
Quest for Camelot
The Pebble and the Penguin
The Last Unicorn

And that's all I have off the top of my head, but I might be back with others for you~ but I would like to say: Little Nemo... YES <333 I lovelovelove that one. c:

I was gonna suggest Felidae,

I was gonna suggest Felidae, Chirin and Plague Dogs. o:

But since those are already said,
-An American Tail. With the little immigrant mouse and the big clumsy bird, classic movie.
-All Dogs Go to Heaven. I adored it as a kid.

That's all I can think of atm.
Spyrre's picture

I just watched "The sea

I just watched "The sea prince & fire child", and it was beautiful, thank you so much for sharing this list. <3

Since you liked that one, I thought to suggest (again) a few old-school animes, which are similar to that one in my opinion.
Taro the dragonboy ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVW4dOMDtHY ) and The little norse prince/Prince of the sun ( http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=little+norse+prince&aq=0m ) (<- must be one of the crappiest trailers ever.. ^^; ) are both old fashioned fantasy/adventure stories that were fun to watch, atleast to me.
Also, you might want to check out Metropolis ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJLcOW4vzPY ) even though it´s not "that" old movie and quite sci-fi, but a beautiful one still. And with "beautiful" I don´t just mean graphics.
Sorry for bumping this again. ^^;

Saturday - I picked up The Last Unicorn for $7 at Wal-Mart, but I'm going to watch another movie with my brother tonight. So that can be taken off my list.

I gotta remember to write down everything I'm looking for so I won't forget, though.

Monday - Came home and found a copy of The Jetsons Movie sitting on my laptop. My brother ordered it for me, it was one I watched a whole lot as a kid. I might even open it up and watch it tonight XD

I'd really like to look for some music from the singer who did the soundtrack for the movie. Her name is Tiffany *shrug*

We saw pieces of Watership Down in one of my classes years ago. I remember it being horribly depressing D:

Thanks for the list. I've been meaning to rewatch some of these. There was an old movie I used to love. I think it was made by a candy company.

Lollipop Dragon and Lollipop Dragon: The Great Christmas Race.

You might have a hard time finding those, though. I've never met anyone else who's seen um ;u;

quadraptor's picture

Watching The Last Unicorn,

Watching The Last Unicorn, I'm pretty happy with the movie already despite the marketing is for little girls XD. It's got the 80's animation I long for, like Flight of Dragons and The Sea Prince and the Fire Child.

How could I have forgotten

How could I have forgotten the Swan Princess? loved that film when I was a kid ♥

This is a film that doesn't really fit into either of the categories, but if you haven't seen 'Brendan and the Secret of Kells' yet, it's well worth a look (and I think it's being played in certain cinemas in the US at the moment. The trailer's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMPhHTtKZ8Q
