The sky was dark.
And from the looming clouds above them, rain soaked the hoof-trodden ground where once blood dwelled and stained the earth. Hooves had stepped in it, and tracked it thoughout the forest. Fawns had played in it, naive that one of their own had fallen and lay in its own blood, dying there only two days ago, crying for something to end it. The community had buried the crushed frail body. But the blood remained, and the grass that grow there, took it greedily within themselves. The body had been discovered after a pair of fawns had returned to their den, blood on their hooves. Screaming, for they had seen it. The mother doe had seen the blood, and followed the trail with a leader stag to where, behold the body layed sprawled and lifeless.
....
"Ephra, Ephra!" Virgil called out to the doe. He could see her between the trees. The rain had not stopped for several days, and the present legend had been stirred amongt the crowd of disturbed deer, that it began raining the moment the fawn died...
The rain she was feeling now, on her fur, the fawn felt the moment it drew its last breath.
The moment the sharp hooves shattered its bones.
The moment it called out for help, and saw itself surrounded by its own blood...
She'd been there. She'd heard the call. She'd seen it happen, and yet she had fainted. Allowed its death to take place. Allowed that demon to end the life of a pure child. A fawn.
"What was its name?" Ephra whispered shakily when she saw the mound of dirt that had been carefully piled on top of the bones that lay underneath. Virgil came up beside her. His dark fur clumping with the rain. "Did it have a mother? Was it a boy or a girl? How old--" Virgil placed his head gently on her neck. She was still walking silently and unconsiously toward the grave. Virgil walked in front of her.
"Shh, Ephra... there is nothing you can do." He looked at her with his green eyes. Hers, a liquid brown. Her dark eyelashes just sheltering the tops of her eyes. Her gaze was so far away... so distant and hollow. He'd have to scream to get her to come back to him... She layed down there. Staring at the grave. The shriekes came back to torment her. The sickening thud of his hooves shook her heart as it was replayed over, and over and over again. She shuddered. Virgil comforted her... there was nothing any of them could do.
...
Virgil had fallen asleep next to the poor doe, he could feel her heartbeat rising, she needed to rest. She was sick, and a fever had been brewing inside of her the day she had seen it.
The community called out "accident"...
She knew what it really was.
But she was one of the eldest, after all. She could be loosing it.
Virgil stirred when a rustle of leaves was heard behind them. "Maaaaaaa...! a distant fawn cry came. Virgil's heart leapt for a moment, and his ears were pricked for any hint of more signs of a fawn... none came. He relaxed after a moment, studying the sleeping Ephra for a few more moments. His movements had not disturbed her.
"Maybe I'm loosing it." He shook his fur, and rested his head once more.
"Maaaa!" It was close now! He turned, and his heart dropped to his feet, which bolted upright. His body was stiff, and tense beyond belief. He had turned, jumped and landed in a matter of seconds flat.
It stood.
There.
Its feet caked in mud, as if it had been running miles. Its lips and chin were red... and its eyes. They penetrated his soul. Pleading, fearful, dead and wanting. Poppies were placed delecatly upon its head. The rain poured harder.
...
Vigil's heat was thumping loudly, he was waiting for the fawn to move... It stood, staring coldly into his eyes, unblinking, and even the rain didn't bother it. It was so much smaller than he, yet the fawn didn't move.
....
Mother... Help me.
.... Mother....! Help me.
..... Mothephra....Help me!
....... Moth-ephra! Help me!
...... Ephra, help me!!
"Nooo!" Ephra's head lifted from the air. A dream. She turned her head to the side to see out of the corner of her eyes, only Virgil's standing, stiff and shaking leg. She craned her neck harder. Immediatly her tail tucked, her body heaved out a chilling shriek and she bolted behind Virgil who's stance was neither offencive nor welcoming. Hes was shaking but the fawn paid no heed to Virgil and instead, walked carefully past him to the horrified Ephra. Its eyes still unblinking, it took a deep bow, and Ephra was sure to back up, even the slightest amount. She couldn't touch it. She wouldn't touch it.
Its feet, one two, one, two came towards her expectantly. She backed up at first, and finally the fawn rested its cheek gently upon the chest of Ephra. Listening.
The echoing thump thump. th-thump, th-thump, tha-thump! The symphony of all life, that the fawn no longer felt within its own breast...
"E-Ephra!!" Virgil called out, still turned to the horizion. Passed the fawn's grave, he stood. Walking oblivious to the ghost-fawn only meters away.
It called out as if it had seen it's own mother. Its voice was hoarse, and it would cough between heaves of screaming, and calling. Virgil nor Ephra had the heart to stop its yelling, yet they wanted desperatly not to have the attention drawn to them.
The fawn ran to the demon, whos eyes widened at the sight.
He backed up, kicking and rearing. The fawn only kept coming.
"Leave!!" The stag barked, a crack in his voice showed his hidden fear. The fawn ran, inside, then exited Baal. Everything seemed to stop, save for the rain. The fawn was dead, and it was a ghost...
The fawn tilted its head, not understanding the issue with the mahogony colored stag.
It had come to ease both Ephra and Baal's pain.
There was no need for more violence.
Ephra and Virgil followed but stayed a considerable distance behind the fawn.
Virgil galloped full speed at the demon.
Cursing as he ran.
Ephra called after him.
and jumped between the fighting stags.

Today was chilling, haunting, perfect, and almost seemed planned out. Everything we did today was flawless.
It's late here and I need to go to church but I will finish the remainder of this story tomorrow I promise! just wanting to get some of the feelings I has flowing freely now...
Darn it all, I wish I had taken screen-shots, but I was so absorbecd in every action that was displayed I couldn't even think!!
For everyone who missed the in-forest action, I hope this explains a little for you if you keep hwaring about a ghost-fawn.
Oh wow! This is turning out awesomely, maybe it's just because I was there but it really is quite haunting. I love the supernatural twist to this situation, I would not have thought of it but I couldn't think of a better way to bring closure to the fawn's death.
Much love for Max Richter, too! One of my favourite composers ever.
Oh I'm so glad you're engoying it so far! I was worried, I didn't want Ephra to look like a cupcake, but in the next chapter all "cupcakeness" will fall apart.
Supernatural, you mean because it's a ghost?
Yeah, I thought the undead thing was a little bit too much.
To tell you the truth, after I'd seen the drawings you did I wanted badly to go back in as that little fawn to just tell you it was ok. Turns out BOTH of you were there, sleeping. I waited for a bit, got poppies in my antlers and acted like a ghosty lil deer. Virgil invited me so solemnly it was amazing. I didn't put it in the story which I thought didn't really make sense, but it was funny how on your post Virgil was like:
"holy jesus the deceased fawn is sitting by Ephra and I!" I laughed my pants off. I thought it was a little bit much, then when Baal came I couldn't help but to play mind games with him, and then Virgil jumped into action and it all fell into place....
-breathes-
WHEW! That was so much fun. Thank YOU Ephra, and I can't wait to see when you get out of all of this inspiration!!
edit: Oh and I hadn't known anything about the composer until I'd heard it on your post, god save you all from more Loreena music. LOL. It's beautiful.
and Yorres: IM SO SORRY YOU MISSED IT! But (hopefully) some art and more writing comes from it. You'll feel like you were right there.
Its like it was rehearsed I swear.
Good job on this, Mystress! I wanted to ask someone if we could consider this a "community" thing.. because earlier in the forest yesterday evening, after I had read about the fawn's killing, I had Kaoori sort of drifting around the forest.. feeling very uneasy. As if she had sensed something. I just didn't know if it was common knowledge.
-----------------------------------------------
I'm a little wolf inside a girl.
Amazing! Your words do it all more justice than mine ever could. To finally read the whole story, so to speak, truly brings home the tragedy of what was done.
You are an incredible writer. Had me spellbound from beginning to end and impatient for more!
Make me want to re-write my whole story. XD I think I teared up a little.
Oh yes of course, it concerns the whole forest! I'm sorry if this is seeming like an "inside" thing. Anyone can jump in on this, it just happened that the fawn was an extra of mine that I allowed to be "killed" by Baal. Baal used it for his story, and then after Ephra had read about it, she made her deer uneasy and actually get sick (because she'd actaully witnessed it and not known if she was allowed to interfere). Then when I saw the art I said:
"Ok. Little fawn girl is going to visit you." And that's what happened today, and it wasn't even planned or anything!. By all means, ANYONE IS WELCOME TO TAG ONTO THIS!! It's just so spectacular and Baal has added so much dred to the forest it does concern everyone indeed! Again, apologies for hogging it! LOL!
edit: Ninja'd!
Baal,
Oh I'm so honored by your words! You have no idea how much it means to me.
It's good to read from a different perspective, but you could only write so much! You came in at the beginning but not the VERY beginning... this is just what happened between the three, then you come in, and follow through thoughout the rest. (I logged quickly after you. Said goodbye and 'it's ok' to Ephra.)
The forest is greatly disturbed. I don't think you've heard the end of the dead fawn....
(she won't appear often at all really.)
Beautiful.
Second portrayal, with words, the emotion becomes so much more clear. I love this, the forest is more amazing now then it ever has been. xD
...Excuse the lack of responce, I'm on the wrong computer. D8
Wow. Amazing writing! And such haunting music, I recognize it from somewhere...
And since the fawn died... Well, I guess Silvery could have had a nightmare about her, since she has a vision the night before a deer dies. She never knows WHO exactly dies, since in the dream itself the person is replaced by herself... So she actually sees her own death and the way she is killed (yes it's not pleasant for her...). If you think this is too supernatural, I would understand. But I'd love to write a little thing about that fawn if you allow me to, her gift/curse hasn't been very familiar with most people yet.

Haru: Thank you! I love leaving my readers wanting more! There will be more today I promise. Keep an eye out for it!
ocean: Almost read it all! I still have another part, hehe! As far as I know Ephra will be drawing some illustrations to go with last nights/yestrday/early early this morning's events. XD
Two Ears: Thanks! It's almost like a collaboration! We hadn't intended it to be but blame Baal, it was all his idea!! -points- Lol. I'm glad you like it. More to come soon!
Virgil: Haha that's ok! I know what you thought about yesterdays events! I think we all feel the same way! Will you be writing anything in the eyes of Virgil?? That woul be really interesting, in contrast to Baal's writing of the fight!!
Avani: I love this composer, Ephra introduced me. It was the exact feeling I needed, it sounds like a little kid playing piano, like the fawn.... the perfect atmosphere I needed. Thanks!
Yea sure!! Write write! This concerns the whole forest, as I said to Kaoori, go nuts guys! I think it spices up the forest a little bit too. To give it a more creepy edge... Love it.
pinkpaws: Thank you! Fantastic is a great word, and I thank you! The fawn creeps me out too, and sometimes not in a good way, so you're lucky!! LOL!
I am honored to have such an incredible writer as part of all of this. You are more than welcome. And I love this, how you have created a recording for everyone that was involved. Adds so much emotion to the tale, even for ones who were there through most of it. I feel better that my tiny section is part of so much more.
I don't think so. Ocean will be writing about her encounter, and Kaoori has already written hers. Ephra will be drawing some more spectaular art for it... and there will be more to come. SO GLAD you loved this.
Oh and Yorres, and Walter are getting ready to ambush you lul. Not now I don't think. Yorres might be on but idk about Walter... I'll write about that experience if I get to wittness it.
Yes, I think there is more to come...
I will have to read these. I think I am not alone when I say that I absolutely can not wait to see what Ephra draws. Those last images, even so simple, were just astounding.
Heh, I have gotten that vibe from those two. I only hope Baal can hold his own long enough to escape. He is far from in the best of shape. He shall have to tread lightly. It seems all he has dreaded has indeed come to pass.
This is a fantastic story you've written, your words are hauntingly melodic and I wouldn't take my eyes off the screen until I had read every word. It's spellbinding! The music helped, and it's a beautiful piece :3
I LOVE the idea of a dead fawn haunting the Forest when it rains. I'm totally into this ghoulishness, and I will DEFINITELY be writing about an encounter with my fawn Apparanza.
