worried for my rat

I have an albino rat named cupcake. I've had her for over a year now. Just recently she has developed a lump on her right side. She may have gotten that after she jumped off of her coffee table in an attempt to reach the center table (heaven only knows why). The strange thing is, her lump is not bothering her, and seems to be free floating. My dad called the vet to make an appointment, and the vet said that those kinds of lumps are not unheard of. I just hope it's not serious. I would like to keep cupcake for as long as I can. She was a rescue after all.

Well, I think you should take

Well, I think you should take her to the vet, that is for sure. But to me and from my experience with having friends with rats, it sounds like a tumor. Tumors are very common is rats and most will get them. One of the many reasons rats and mice are used by scientists in experiments. And if you say it's a free moving lump, it should be easy to remove.

but on a side note, if your vet hasn't heard of free-moving lumps in rats . . . are you sure they are experienced enough to work with rodents? Lumps are very common in rodents.

edit: More info here and here.

the vet has heard of the

the vet has heard of the lumps before. If it gets worse before her appointment, we can take her to one of the emergency clinics in the area. I just hope she doesn't get worse. She will be taken to the vet next monday.

I have also lived a rat, and

I have also lived a rat, and she also received the same tumor (where she grew up very much, I suffered her to the vet, and she underwent surgery. but alas, she died (
Until the tumor is not much faster wear it to the vet! will be more likely that she will live)

Cupcake went to the vet

Cupcake went to the vet today, and the vet said it was benign since the lump was completely free-floating and hadn't grown since it first appeared. He also said to keep an eye on it if anything does change.

and boy does cupcake hate going to the vet... Cupcake made taking her temperature nearly impossible for the vet tech who came in first

That's good that she's okay

That's good that she's okay for now. I had a friend with a pet rat named Gus, he was so cute. I can't understand how some people are so ridiculously afraid of them. The wild ones, maybe, but not the tame ones.

yeah, nothing to fear about

yeah, nothing to fear about cupcake. She's harmless

I absolutely adore rats, and

I absolutely adore rats, and I'm glad to hear that she's not in any serious trouble as of yet. Hope it stays that way.
