fairy deer

often seen near the drinkplatts
It was a dark and foggy dawn at the drinkplatts. The absolute quiet was unusual; No crickets or owls. Even the songbirds were silent. Why? some speculated an invasion of demons that possessed every creature in the peaceful forest, turning them into dark spirits. Every creature but one: A tiny fairy-deer. The drinkplatts were her only refuge, as the fairy ring surrounding it emitted a misty barrier to keep spells and curses at bay. Hours passed as the fairy waited for the light of the sun to return and banish the cursed ones scratching and pounding at the barrier, but it never came. A new age of dark and despair appeared imminent. Even inside the magic circle, the darkness was taking it's toll as the flowers on the fountain lost all of their petals. Fear flowed over the tiny sprite.
"Woe to the forest, a dark age has begun!" she cried as a silvery tear fell.
It fell into the center of a brown, withered poppy.
The poppy began to turn back to green, and the petals that fell began to pulse and glow, shifting from brown to red. Slowly, each petal floated up and re-joined the plant, and it turned into a marvelous, glowing crystel. The completed jewel-flower, as if picked by the hand of an invisible deity, floated to the center of the water. The flower floated lazely for what seemed like an eternety for the fairy, then a faint glow grew from the center of the crystel flower. Quickly and steadly, the glow grew brighter and brighter. The fairy shielded her eyes as best she could. The light eminated to the edges of the circle, and stopped. The fairy could hear the cries of anguish from the demons outside. She closed her eyes tight, so as not to be blinded, and flew to the flower.
The tiny fairy circled the flower repeatedly, sprinkling pixie dust and chanting:
Jewel-flower
grow your light
banish evil's
retched night
Jewerl-flower
give us sight
bring the day
with all your might
Jewel-flower
glowing bright
give us all
the strength to fight
Jewel-flower
banish spite
and give not evil
chance of flight!
With each pass around, the light grew past the magic barrier, enveloping everything within the forest! All innocent beings were returned to normal, and all peices of the darkness were completly destroyed.
Exhausted, the fairy fell. But she did not land in the water, no she landed on the velvety head of a tiny new-born fawn.
"prithee, little fawn, where did you come from? And where is your mother?" the tiny fairy asked.
the fawn only cocked her tawny ear and tilted her head in responce. In the center of her forehead glistened a tiny red gem.
The puzzled fairy tried to recall what had just occured: the light, the chanting, and now a fawn appearing out of nowhere? laying in the middle of the water? It didn't make sense! Unless...
"Ah!" exclaimed the fairy as the peices of the puzzle connected, then she added, "Were you the crystel flower?"
The fawn snorted as if to say 'yes'.
"Well then," said the fairy as she picked the most beautiful poppies from the top of the fountain and wove them into a crown, "I christen thee Lady Jewel! By the gods of this endless forest, may you never fear the darkness, nor anything that lies inside. And may the warmth of your happiness never fade into hopelessness, anger, despair, or fear. For you are the guiding light of this forest my child, you are here to protect everyone and everything that lives within this relm."
And with that, the fairy laid the red flowers on the little Lady Jewel's tawny head. The flowers glowed, and instantly became crystels. Lady smiled and let out a baby laugh. Lady jewel wobbled to her feet and took a tiny step towards the fairy. An hour passed, and the fawn could now walk and, ahem, 'speak' properly.
With this, the little fairy's time was over and she withdrew to the top of the fountain.
"Farewell my child, You are now ready to face the world and the many challanges it holds for you"
Her magic was now completly gone, and with one final bright flash, she transformed into a sparkling crystel poppy in the center of the patch.
A small diamond tear formed in Lady's eye. She bowed, and then bounded towards the edge of the ring. Stopping short, she turned and looked at the flower. Lady let out a tiny moo and smiled as if to say 'goodbye mother, and thank you.'
She stepped out of the ring...

A few days after the event, a tall dragon-deer named Juniper happened to see a little baby fawn sleeping in the poppies at the ruins. Now Juniper had heard the rumors of a strange fawn with crystel flowers on her head being sighted around the forest, and a closer look at the baby revealed that it certainly was that very fawn. Juniper, who was not fond of fawns but did like a challange, nudged Lady awake.
"Hello little fawn," said Juniper (her voice sounding like a young boy's),"What is your name?"
"La..dy...Je..wel," Lady managed to speak in her tiny voice, though she was still a little too young to speak very well at 3 days of age,"who...you?"
"Names Juniper!" the dragon-deer answered confidently, "say kid, you need a herd by any chance?"
Herd? This was a new concept for the 3 day old child. She had been alone since her mother turned into a flower at the drinkplatts fountain...
"well?" said juniper growing impatient, and jarring Lady out of her thought.
"what...herd?" the fawn squeeked.
"a herd is a group of friends or family that like to hang out together. Just be on your toes, it's rutting season and some of the other guys in my group might be a little uneasy." answered juniper.
"rut?...what...rut?" continued lady.
"I'll tell you later," answered Juniper, getting a little annoyed at Lady's constant questions, "Let's go."
Lady Jewel happily followed juniper, babbling and giggling in wonder along the way. Occasionally Lady stopped to eat mushrooms or pine cones, and to cast spells on Juniper or other deer. Eventually, they got to the herd. Good timing as well, juniper's nerves were getting frayed from all the prancing, babbling, spell casting, and playing.
A great pink dragon-deer, who answers to the name of ryuu, approached lady, followed by a deer with peacock antlers. Soon, more of the herd came by to welcome the new fawn into their extended family.
