A coat of tawny gold, brandished with numerous wet dots from the storm, gives a small shake. The manticore crouches to warm cold toes, giving the doe a few feet away a tired smile. “Thanks for lettin' me hang out wit' ya.”

One large, round ear, adorned

One large, round ear, adorned with a single, golden earring turned towards the stranger when he spoke. Averell then turned to rest her amber eyes at him while her lips pulled up in a small, but friendly smile. "No need to thank me, there's plenty of room here." Trying to hoard all that to herself would be nothing but selfish.

"Why are you sitting here all

"Why are you sitting here all alone? Aren't you bored?" He asks after watching her for a while.
Snowsauria's picture

Averell offered the stranger

Averell offered the stranger a smile at his question, he couldn't know that her previous company had left only a short time before he had arrived. "Hm, I don't really know many here, I suppose that's why. And bored? No, not really." She didn't know that many here, despite being born in this forest - most likely because she had been away for most of her life. Her attention focused on the stranger again, ears perked. "But I prefer some company, of course." She added shortly after, certainly appreciated that he had approached to join her. "What is your name?" Was finally asked, with a slight tilt of her head.

( I apologize for such late answer, the community site is really acting up for me at the moment. ;; )
Eq's picture

He watched her thoughtfully.

He watched her thoughtfully. "You seem big. I thought you had been here for a long time," he finally replied, a slight frown forming on his face, "but you're just sitting down, why is that fun?" It had nagged him how he never seemed to find anyone around his age playing. They were all just huddled together in small groups or pairs, sitting down. Usually did not pay him any attention either - but this one had. His eyes wandered down her throat and stopped at the brown spots - that did not seem to be dirt, but she was white almost all over (not her eyes, either, did she roll her face in the dirt? Did not smell bad though) - then raised his gaze to meet hers. Blinked. Then the boy shifted from his comfortable position to a more formal and straight one. "I'm Ansel. Who're you?"

((I gave up as soon as I saw the drupal marks all over my TEF pages. Sorry for the late reply, too. xD))
Snowsauria's picture

"You're right, I should have

"You're right, I should have been here for a long time. But I got... lost when I was little, and only recently found my way back here." Ave studied the younger one's face, hoping she wouldn't scare him by speaking of getting lost. Then a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth, he sure was a curious one. "Well, it's perhaps not fun but, I've been running around the whole day and then it's nice to sit down and rest for a little while. But of course it can get boring if you sit for too long." She shifted to sit more comfortable, still eyeing the younger one in her company. He seemed to have a lot of energy, too young to understand the concept of just sitting, and relaxing. It made her feel old. Her round ears pointed forwards when he told his name, and Ave gave a small nod. "I'm Averell."

( damn drupal xD )

Ansel cocked his head to the

Ansel cocked his head to the side, gradually loosing up his stiff positure as she spoke.
Lost.
He flicked an ear nervously and he briefly eyed the trees surrounding them. 'Should have been here for a long time', was it? Feeling uncomfortable, the boy lowered his eyes. "I... got lost too," he admitted in a quiet voice to the dirt next to her. "How did you get lost....?" He glanced at her with a careful look. For a second he was worried how she would respond, but then he caught a mild expression on the other.
He returned the faint smile and let the question drop as he moved on to her explanation. "I guess that's true. Just for a bit then." He nodded to himself in a serious tone and sprawled himself over the forest floor. He had been walking all day, but now he sat still he felt it more clearly. With a sigh he rested his head on the ground. At first he did not understand why the doe had decided to sit in a sunny spot in the middle of nowhere, but it was quite comfy and warm. The sound of the waterfall was a bit distracting, though.
She spoke again, so he raised his head, few strands of grass stuck on his cheek.
'Averell'. He mouthed her name curiously but flattened his ears as he discovered his inability to pronounce it correctly ("Avfu-ell").
Snowsauria's picture

Averell tilted her head at

Averell tilted her head at his reply, feeling quite sorry for the young boy. And for a brief second he seemed rather lost still, but she surely hoped it wasn't so. "But you found your way back, yes? You belong here?" One could never know, if she managed to get lost outside of the forest then it could be possible for others to get lost in it, couldn't it? At his question she was quiet for a moment, not quite sure how to explain what had happened without using words that could be confusing, like 'portal' and such. "Hm, I was playing by myself when I was a small fawn, and suddenly I was in a different place outside of this forest. And I didn't find my way back until I had grown up." She then tried to explain, before smiling when he seemed to grasp the concept of resting, and actually seemed to enjoy the warm rays of sun shining down on them. Ave had to laugh when he sprawled out on the forest floor. She could hear how he didn't pronounce her name just right, but saw no reason to correct him, it didn't really matter.
Eq's picture

He liked her laugh. The boy's

He liked her laugh. The boy's face lightened up with a grin, unsure why he had caused such a reaction but pleased nonetheless. It faded slightly as he felt her gaze sadden as she questioned him.
This time he just listened to her patiently. He had no answer to her questions, so he simply gave her an apologetic smile. He was still uncertain of his current whereabouts and how he got 'here'. He had a few ideas, but they mattered very little to him; at least for now, he was satisfied with just understanding why he was here. And he did.
He turned his attention back to Averell as she elaborated her explanation for her disappearance. Curiousity slowly began to spread across his face... then replaced by confusement.
Just a moment, only closing your eyes briefly, and one would find themself in a different place?
Where had she gone in order to disappear? How odd, that was certainly different from what he had experienced-
His expression twitched briefly. He closed off the thoughts, instinctively knowing this would be a mistake to dig into.
"Avf...a.. Lady. Thank you for telling me - I will take care when I walk around. But, uh..." Ansel raised a doubtful brow, giving her a careful look. He filled his cheeks with air only to release it with a small pop, quietly reconsidering - should he ask or would it be rude? In the end, desire won. So, with genuine concern he asked: "What happened to your face?"

((ooh my god I take forever to type a reply I'm happy with. My sincere apologies TT_TT))
Snowsauria's picture

It didn't really seem like

It didn't really seem like Ansel knew the answer to her questions, which only strengthened her impression of him still being - at least in a way - lost. But the Endless Forest was at least not the worst place to get lost in, as far as she knew. Sure, there were some questionable individuals around, but mostly a young one like Ansel would be safe here. Ave did at least hope so. She decided not to pursue the topic, afraid she would only make it worse. Besides, it could seem she had managed to confuse him with her explanation, despite having tried not to use any confusing words. But Ave could still see how her words were confusing - she probably would have been too, if it had been the other way around. "Aver-ell." Speaking her own name slowly this time, as if to 'show' him how to say it, but she smiled shortly after. "But 'Lady' is fine too. And I don't think you have to worry about it, I haven't heard about anyone else being lost the same way I was." Ave then 'raised an eyebrow' at his question, once again tilting her head as she tried to hide the amused smile threatening to show at the corners of her mouth. "What do you mean? There's something wrong with my face?"

( Ah, don't worry about it, I'm rather slow too c'x )

Ansel tilted his head.

Ansel tilted his head. "Avfuh-ell." He squinted his eyes in annoyance - that 'v' was hard to say, why was that. "Affer... ell. Hm? Vvv... A-Veh-rell? Aveh-rell." He huffed, pleased with his result. The fawn returned the smile with a satisfied grin. If he had a tail it would have been swaying form side to side energetically. "Lady Aveh-rell." A mild expression followed with the doe's reassurance. Bad news or good, he could not decide what it was. Not like he had time to mull over it - the lady before him demanded his immediate attention.
"Uh." The boy opened his mouth only to close it again. It took him a moment to realise that he should have denied that anything was wrong. "N-no." He hurriedly replied, trying to give her a convincing look. Maybe it had been a bad idea afterall. "I just... thought it seemed longer than mine. A bit, just a bit. And-" He shot a desperate glance to the side as if the 'right words' would be dangling somewhere in the background. "I-I was just wondering if... you had always been like that? No, I mean, were you, um, born like this? Nono, it's.. " He began to panic. "I don't think you're weird, I j- I'm sorry." At this point Ansel was no more than a small bundle of blue fur looking very aware that he might be in trouble.

((;_;' Not half as slow, but thank you. Here, have an awkward brat in return for your patience.))

It wasn't really that much of a deal if Ansel was able to pronounce her name correctly or not, but Ave remained silent and let him try, giving smiles and encouraging nods on the way. "Very good!" She finally said, after he had managed to say her name almost perfectly. Her eyes travelled for a brief moment, taking in their surroundings but the forest seemed quiet right now. And to be honest she was just glad, after two quite... eventful days. Averell turned her attention back towards Ansel, at first still amused by how he responded to her question, but after a while she only felt sorry for the poor boy, as it seemed he was really afraid he had offended her. She shook her head slightly, couldn't help but laugh a bit again. "Don't be sorry, I didn't believe you thought that either. And yes, I was born with this face." She smiled down at the young boy, chuckling again. "But you know, I can actually change my face to look more like yours. You know, with the magic that can be found here in the forest." Was added shortly after. Not that she 'wore' her human face that often though, at least she hadn't so far.

( Fff, he's so sweet, poor thing, haha. :'b )
Eq's picture

An ear flicked by the sound

An ear flicked by the sound of laughter. Disbelief and cautiousness was painted all over his face at first, but the Lady seemed to have overlooked his behaviour, furthermore even answered his questions. He shifted his slunk posture to a relaxed one. She really did not seem angry with him. A small tight knot in his stomach unclenched.
Well, she had not showed him hostility before, but this seemed to prove her patience. So he gave her a shy smile. "I think you look pretty." He murmured.
With newfound interest he stared, ears perking as she happened to utter the word "magic". "Really?" He replied in pure awe. "That's so cool!" Could he get it too? Maybe he could learn to fly or spit lava or something.

((I think I'll go sleep. |'D She's so sweet, pfft. And damn pretty >> Feel free to end this, he's just going to be really annoying about magic now she brought it up. 8( ))
Snowsauria's picture

Luckily it seemed he relaxed

Luckily it seemed he relaxed again shortly after; Ave didn't want him to walk around feeling bad about the questions he had asked her later on, after they parted ways. Another smile curled the corners of her mouth. "Thank you." She replied, sincerely appreciating his words. And the word magic really seemed to have caught his interest, so she gave a nod in confirment. "Really." She answered, grinning at his excitment. "But it's nothing really advanced though, it's pretty much the same as the magic used when changing masks and faces on each other. You know, the magic used from mushroom trees." Was added shortly after, because there was really nothing spectacular about the magic she could do when changing her face. "You have tried that, right? Gathering spells from mushrooms or pinecone trees?" Ave tilted her head curiously, would have thought this younger played with spells as she had seen other kids - and adults for that matter - do.

( Haha, thank you, makes me happy to hear :') and I don't mind that, rofl. Ave just think it's nice to have a chat with him. c: But have a good night! n_n )
Eq's picture

Ansel's gaping widened with

Ansel's gaping widened with each passing second as she introduced him to the world of magic. He had no idea that the trees were special in that way. Still, he needed some confirmation about a few things. "It doesn't hurt?" He asked casually, trying to let his worry stay out of his voice. Lips were pressed into a thin line, cheeks filled with air yet again as he pondered. It sounded so tempting even if the change did hurt. The fawn glanced at Averell - would a mask hurt? Why would it, it was not like it would change bones and flesh. A mask sounded like a good idea indeed, he thought cheerfully. A small pop escaped with the air as he grinned wide. Maybe the rocks held undiscovered secrets as well - worth some investigation later. This would make for good entertainment for at least a day, oh yes. Then his expression darkened. Just one issue: "Mushrooms?" He asked in an alarmed tone, raising a brow. "No... I didn't know." He paused. He really should have known, should he not? He had his suspicions that there was something amiss, he just had not been able to figure it out. "They seemed like normal trees to me. How do you 'gather' magic? I don't understand." His eyes were practically begging.

((c': Thank you))
Snowsauria's picture

The doe was quick to shake

The doe was quick to shake her head at his question. "Not one bit." She quickly assured him. There was nothing dangerous about the forest magic, but it could still be a strange experience the first times; especially with the spells that turned you into another animal. "The only thing that will happen is that there is a bright light that might seem a bit overwhelming at first, but it's not painful and it vanishes quickly." Ave then glanced over at the nearby trees, and shortly after noticed one with mushrooms on it. "Yes, like those over there." She gave a nod with her head in the direction of the mushroom tree, then looked back at Ansel. "We can try to cast some, if you'd like? Then you can get a feeling of how it is to gather magic. There's a pinecone tree over there as well, maybe an antler spell is nice to start with." Then he wouldn't need to get his face full like with an mask spell. Ave got to her feet, but looked at Ansel once more for confirmation before starting to move towards the pinecone tree.
Eq's picture

He almost sighed in relief -

He almost sighed in relief - that was one worry out of the world. He nodded as she continued, paying close attention to her every word. "Oh. Light. Okay then," he replied. Averell turned her head, and he curiously followed suit. "I've walked past them before, though. Nothing really happened," he said slowly as he studied the tree, "so wha... oh." He turned his head back to face her - barely containing his excitement. "Yeah, can we do that?" He asked her, already half-standing. Despite an eager urge to scramble to the tree as fast as he could, the fawn knew he had to pay close attention to her every move. So Ansel followed behind her somewhat patiently with eyes flickering between the tree and her movement. This was gonna be awesome. He giggled.

((I won't be able to respond to her move before tomorrow afternoon... ish. c': Thank you for going along with this thus so far!))
Snowsauria's picture

Ave chuckled. "You will have

Ave chuckled. "You will have to eat one for anything to happen." She explained, and glanced over at the mushroom tree for a moment. But when the young boy seemed eager to try some spells, she turned her attention back to him and gave a nod. "Of course we can." With a smile she lead the way over to the nearest pinecone tree. "Here is a tree where you can get antler spells, if you look up you can see pinecones hanging in the branches." Ave glanced upward, and could immediately see several pinecones seemingly ready to drop at any second. "To get a pinecone, you have to give the tree a nudge. Just a little one." While explaining, she leaned towards the tree and gave it a small nudge with her shoulder, and almost immediately a pinecone fell down in front of her feet. It didn't taste very good, but she still ate it - and could immediately feel the magic from the pinecone, but didn't cast the antlers spell on Ansel yet. Ave then moved away from the tree and gave Ansel an encouraging nod. "Now you try. You can cast an antler spell on me first, then I can cast one on you if you want." A slight grin formed her lips, couldn't really remember the last time she had been casting spells just for fun.
Eq's picture

The boy made a horrified

The boy made a horrified face. "But... are you - really?" He asked her in a pleading voice, somehow hoping that she had an alternative. And a relieved expression spread across his face as Averell did. He hopped after her, not knowing what antlers were, but doubting by her tone, it sounded promising. He stopped as she did and looked into the air above them. Did he have to eat pinecones...? As an answer, the doe nudged the tree and consumed the brown cone that fell as a result. "Okay!" Ansel took a few steps forward, hammering his shoulder into the tree. He stumbled away from the tree then, spinning around as he heard a small thud. He smiled at his treasure, disregarding his sore shoulder as he bent down to bite the cone. It tasted like dirt and wood and - despite being small, it took some time for him to swallow. He felt it gradually with each bite; a warm feeling bubbling inside. It splashed around, but he could contain it - and aim it - so he did, releasing the pressure, and a great light blinded him. The shimmering faded, and he stared at the doe before him dumbfounded.
Snowsauria's picture

"Careful, you don't have to

"Careful, you don't have to nudge that hard." Well, at least he managed to get the pinecone down. Ave shook her head with a smile, then eyed him as he ate the pinecone he had managed to knock down. Maybe she should have tried to explain to him how to use the magic, but it was kinda difficult to put into word. You just had to... go with the flow when you felt the magic. And she barely had time to think of anything to say when the bright light blinded her, and in the next second she could spot brightly colored peacock feathers in the corner of her eyes. "Would you look at that." The doe laughed and gave her feathery crown a shake, then grinned as she looked at Ansel. "Very good. Now it's your turn to get a new look." And with that she let the magic leave her in a bright flash of light, still smiling as she wondered what kind of antlers the boy would end up with. Hopefully not the great white ones, they were rather heavy.
Eq's picture

He had barely heard her

He had barely heard her guiding words - he was far too consumed by the idea of using magic. So he had gone ahead and casted his first spell. And the result had been a great surprise.
He stared. He couldn't help it. "Wow," he uttered hazily, fascination radiating from every inch of his body. Averell shook her new hairdo (what was it, some kind of hat? Deer didn't grow feathers as far as he knew), and he followed the waving feathers with his eyes. "Huh...?" He blinked, only paying half attention before he was blinded by the bright light. He gradually felt something weighing down slightly on his head as a pair of nubs materalised, but he couldn't tell - he was seeing white all around him as a result of closing his eyes a little too late. "Uh? Did it work? What's.." He blinked, slowly being able to tell the landscape apart. He frowned, staring curiously at the doe. "What happened?"
Snowsauria's picture

The light faded once again,

The light faded once again, on top of Ansel's head- through the blue hair - a pair of nubs had grown. Perfect 'first time' antlers. Ave chuckled as she gave a nod. "Yeah, it worked, you've got antlers now. They're quite small though so you can't see them." The doe paused thoughtfully, then looked over at the nearby river. "Maybe you can see them if you go to the river and have a look at your reflection." She suggested as she looked back at Ansel, still wearing the peacock feathers the young boy had given her. She could feel how the feathers tickled against her neck and shoulders, it was a strange feeling even though spells like these were nothing new to her.

( I have to go to bed soon so this will probably be the last reply from me for tonight ;; )

He nodded obediently, eating

He nodded obediently, eating up every word. He had antlers now! Sounded cool - except the part about them being kinda small, that somehow sounded a little disappointing. Still...
The blue fawn bolted toward the river, barely stopping in time as he glided down the edge, his front legs stretched out to prevent a head-on dive into the water. Half-standing, he stared at the reflection, turning his head a bit to get a better view. He inhaled deep and let the air out upwards at his bangs with frustration as they blocked his vision. A few attempts later, he finally noticed the bone-white nubs among the blue hair. "Aveh-rell! Look, look! I've got- I've" he barked excitedly, trying to remember the word she had used, "antlers!" He watched them with glee, but suddenly they shrunk, and kept shrinking until he could no longer see them. "... huh?" He turned his head yet again, checking one last time. He crawled back up, hurrying back to the doe. "Lady..." He gave her a miserable look.

((I fell asleep too so >_> cough))
