DOODLES
Art Trades?

2014

Eiji for Night654, my part of an art trade. I designed him as a tiny doodle ages ago and she took him and turned him into a crazy cool well rounded character and it's awesome. I had so much fun with this.Baaagel/Maximus for Nika. Complicated little guy gets to be a sheepie now.Vaq for Skittlezrawr. I did everything else for the bio and ended up doing the full portrait after Skittlez finalized the look. The crown is made of dark seaglass and morphs into a raven mask when Vaq is getting serious about pranks. It was given to him by a trickster spirit. I really do love Vaq as a character--partly because it's easy for me to roleplay with him and La, since his player lives with me we can talk while we play.
Vaq. Help I can't stop making tiny things with clay. It's so ridiculous and lumpy.Look at this wonky little thing! I love it! It's so ridiculous! This is my first ever attempt at making any kind of miniature and for a first try I don't hate it. The weird unevenness makes me smile and now it's sitting on my desk looking all lopsided. Oh La. This my gift to myself for La's upcoming birfday. I MUST MAKE MORE TO KEEP HER COMPANY.Colour palette, pattern design, and pattern coloration for Vaq's bio, which I am designing for his player. Used the site Colourlovers to make these specifically for the character. Vaq's player initially expressed concern that the feathers on the background looked too much like leaves, but I reasoned that leaves are just tree feathers anyway, and he was okay then. The dark feathers are those of a trickster god who took the form of a raven to prank young Vaq, the orange feathers are mysterious "Vaq feathers" that the young stag allegedly produces somehow. EDIT: Added in the feather tabs and the antler box that I made for the page also. Pretty happy with it all.
Bela for NikaGika. These days, Bela is a vampire, but before then he was a human living in the area around what is modern day St. Petersburg as a hunter-gatherer.For Quadraptor, in memory of his late father."What is he? He is radiant. What does he do? He does good." Ben for Unplugged. My attempt at both participating in and offering thanks and love for his donations to TEF. La loves Ben and I have always cherished times finding him in The Forest and running around like a maniac with him and then finding a nice place to cuddle. This was done with gouache on a scrap of watercolor paper that I had with me while on vacation, so it was painted in a few different places and times. Once, a bee landed on my palette and kept me company for a while very calmly even though I was getting paint from all around it. Even bees know: ben's awesome
Valor for Silversnow200, my half of an art trade. I don't know too much about this character outside of Silver's reference sheet, except that they are quite cosmic. I wasn't able to give the coat a nebulous look with stars and stuff in it, so I tried to give the mask a texture to look like it had a bunch of little dimples like the moon does.Bo for DeerUniverse. Oh man this mask was great to draw from imagination and it's my favorite kind of thing to work with (organic, asymmetrical forms with lots of squiggles and knots) so I had a good time taking my time with it. I also just really really love masks in general. Pretty sure I was the first person to draw the mask from DeerUniverse's description too.Vasana for Parrotsnpineapple. Tried to make her look like an Indian sandstone relief, so not very colorful but with some artistic ties to India like the character.
Adrien for Grammarshine. He's a sweet boy, this stag. I wanted to show that about him and reference the fact that he was raised by rabbits so one of his rabbit family got to be in the picture too.Xylona for Shadowfly, requested by Waning-Sun. I like fawns and the pelt pattern was a chance to use some opaque pink. The hair was the most fun part though, but it has very few layers to it.The Ruins. <3 I love them, La loves them. My partner and I have been watching TV and I typically paint while watching things, so that means lots of gouache stuff recently. The actual picture is about three inches by 6 inches and is just off to the side of a large piece of scrap watercolor paper, and the three little things at the bottom there are samples of what it looks like up close. I really like using gouache/watercolor/inkwash for the reticulation around edges and the layering.
Whisper for Hadoukin, my half of an art trade. I like Whisper's design as a once-winged-now-clipped entity and the little vestigial wings are probably my favorite part of the picture even though the mask ends up being much much more of a focal point. EDIT: Fixed the mask to be more how it was supposed to be. Mirtah for MageofMind, my half of an art trade. Mirtah is a dark mage. Normally she wears a mask, but I wanted to draw her face because she is very a very pretty and mysterious character, and I did my best to make her look magical. The grass is lava! My part of a trade with Pelicann. This was my first attempt at anything using Paint Tool SAI, which I'm doing the old try-before-you-buy with. I'm impressed by the tools of the program but frustrated by its poor handling of transparencies and other tools. Definitely a limited program overall, probably not worth spending the hundred bucks on since I already have Photoshop.
Dharok for Silversnow200, my part of an art trade. Dharok is a celestial dragon deer, and I have a soft spot for eastern myth inspired dragons since I used to draw them a lot in high school. The blue orb balancing on his nose is something special to the character, and since it's such a strange and unique object and since I was drawing him at an adolescent age I wanted him to be doing something fun with it... so balance! My second time painting the unidentified pig skull. This time it was sitting on several colorful blankets so the light reflected differently. I didn't handle the perspective as well but I am much happier with my handling of the colors this time (they are really shitty and get muddy really fast but I emerge triumphant). Unfortunately the whole picture was far too large to scan and even the skull barely fit on my scanner, but such is life.Shanai for Niriya, part of an art trade. Shanai is part tiger and he's still a sweet babby. I dunno about y'all but I think it's the best when cats roll over on their backs and show off their tummies when their ears get smooshed on the ground.
In my painting class we were doing skull studies with some skulls from the college's specimen collection. I went with this one because it's the only one that hadn't been identified. Some kind of pig. Calling it TEFc relevant because pigs and deer are close enough. Both are delicious. This skull may also later play a role in La and the Glitch Skull. Gouache on some 250gsm paper. Just over 100 minutes.Trout for Toya. I made this a while ago to practice with my then new gouaches. Next project will be a similar thing of Tanpopo around the same size since they're little buddies.La sitting. Made for a project of SilverRaccoon's. More recently I moved it to the bottom left background of La's biography, but still only people with big enough monitors can see the whole thing.

A design that I dreamed up and suggested to Nikagika and Caelest as the look for Daryl and Poe's future bab. In the dream there was a big hullaballoo on this site because Poe and Daryl are blue and for them to have a red baby might be strange, and people started arguing about imaginary deer genes and other strange things. Baby looks like a chubby red bull logo with Poe-feather wings. An edgy La doodle made to be silly. My favorite part is that she can go super saiyan.Jezara for Chromai. This was doodled in my sketchbook while I was on an airplane with some watercolor pencils and a terrible blender pen.Oalis for... crap I don't remember the player's name. I doodled this real fast a while back when the player asked for some art of Oalis, and forgot to put it up here. WHOOPS.Vaq and La with Calliefawn and her twig antlers. There's something exceedingly hilarious to me about children addressing adults as "lady".Callielujah's female fawn makes antlers out of twigs, played by one of my housemates.
Leotie for Leotie. A very sweet doe with a very sweet player. I have only recently been playing with drawing regular deer head, aided in my quest by an army of tiny toy ungulates.Tiny Teddy Bear Toy for Peluches, requested by Janet. TTBT (I just call them Peluches really) is the sweetest thing in the forest and I adore cuddling with them. Did my best to make them chubby and give the tortoiseshell pattern fur described on the biography.Altibo for Arborath. One of my first attempts to draw a deer head, aided by a toy deer of mine as a little reference. Altibo has this sort of northern lights type set of colors to her fur underneath a black and it looks like it's trying to pop out, so I painted her bright colors and then did a layer of black over that. I have been contemplating about going back and doing more layers and textures but I haven't seen her player around so I will leave her be for now.Yara for Treedancer, requested by Ebony3. Yara is a sweet girl who has had it rough in life. Tried to reflect that on her face and with the bg. I hope things get better for her, that she finds happiness more as time goes on.The Nubbin for TreeDancer, requested by Ebony3. La has been taking care of The Nubbin as a pseudo-surrogate parent since it fell to The Forest in its cosmic-looking egg. She loves it but doesn't know how to parent and is very physically distant from it most times. I like to imagine they play peekaboo and other baby games. On July 17th, the Glitch Skull (a nemesis/possession/NPC connected to La that is an in-universe explanation for server glitches that befall her) took away La's spells. She doesn't care very much about that, and will be spending some time NEKKID until she's played enough with folks that her magic comes back at its own pace. UPDATE: Not very long after the spells vanished, they returned mysteriously... La sneezed them off and kept being naked.
Vaq for Skittlesrawr. We spent the other night drawing on a piece of paper back and forth to come up with some ideas for his adult look based on his forest set and the idea of him being such a trickster, and settled with the idea that his antlers are tied together. Normally they have feathers in them and Vaq wears a raven mask.Jericho played by Sam, requested by Janet. I didn't know anything about this character while drawing them but took a shot in the dark based on anatomy (mostly the feline traits) that they might like to sit in trees. Then again, don't we all kinda like to sit in trees?Peppino for Nikagika. He makes me think of Johnny Bravo a lot.Panumbra for Charrusekt. Panumbra is a magical character and the things that stand out to me most in her design are, in order, her tail feathers, ribs, and hair. So I tried to pick a pose to include all three of those things in focus.Merral for Kicy3. I'm not sure he usually has a human face (I think he's generally deer-faced) but I prefer people faces and Kicy said I could draw him without the mask. I wanted to convey some seriousness with him since Merral had been feeling down recently.Vanitas for Lnnr. I'm not so sure how likely she is to smile, but she has a really lovely face and hair that I wanted to draw and bring out the fluff textures.
Blixt for Quadraptor. He has this awesome Luchador mask from The Gods, and that is something I have never drawn before so I wanted to put a lot of detail into it. Fortunately there was a luchador mask in my house and I got detail ideas from it regarding stitching. Rather than being one piece of fabric with different colors, it is several materials with the colors layered on top of each other.Poe for Caeleste. Poe's pelt in general and all of the bright flecks of yellow on her always make me think of fireflies, and I supposed that at night time she might even look like a swarm of them. So I bet they think he's pretty great.Elliott for StrangelyUnusual. A vampiric former humanoid, I was happy to do some art for him since he didn't have that much.Hook for Terabetha, requested by Waning-Sun. Hook's a cute patootie. My favorite part about his design is that it is unique (the antlers are part of the helmet) while still perfectly expressible in The Forest!Irdlirvirisissong for Ebony3, requested by Waning-Sun. Ird's a mysterious fellow and I chose to draw him by the water because he's often hanging out there. I also wasn't sure whether his green patches are dirt with grass, but I assumed they were.Nika for Nikagika. I really love this character, she is a saint and a knight, and as a human she had awesome golden armor. At some point on a train ride I had the thought that deer in armor would be awesome, and Nika was an ideal candidate. I really wanted to design some armor... the shoulders and hips are meant to be like shields, but with the bonus that they can be used to body check opponents. Nika's elk-sized too, so she could be quite dangerous. It's a good thing she's sweet.
Lilith for Ebony3, requested by Waning-Sun. As done as it's going to get... I feel like I screwed up a lot of aspects of this picture when I was painting it. Kind of gave up on this when I sat down to paint again and got that sinking feeling in my gut. May take another stab at Lilith later. I think I screwed up the proportions but I can't tell what I've done wrong outside of where I need to correct the eyes and how the chest fluff hanging makes her look emaciated. Blurgh.Zash for Waning-Sun, a summer doodle. I like Zash and have for a while since he's bookish and I've got such a soft spot for bookish characters. I also have a certain fascination with drawing scars and other unusually textured patches of skin, so his eye are and ear were a lot of fun to make. Aivilo suggested I draw Xan for .Ru., so I gave it a whirl despite being quite unconfident with animal snouts. Just a summer doodle so not a huge amount of time invested, but still fun. I love drawing tentacle-type shapes.La, in default antlers, carrying the nubbin played by OrinocoFlow. The nubbin is a baby alien that hatched from an egg that La helped to incubate. A very quick doodle--La fell asleep as a squirrel and woke up with Kettu (played by Starfox)--who loves squirrels--keeping her company. I like to think that La crawled all over her.A WIP of the "Mother" Statue (as La thinks of it) that's getting attention on and off. Can't decide whether I want it blotchy or smooth, probably somewhere in between. Grass needs attention and detailing with colors and so do the ruins behind, but main focus is just on getting the right textures and things on the statue. I'm dying.
La and Oduvanchik got rather vicious to each other at one point, verbally. It ended with Odu kidnapping Tanpopo (whom La did manage to rescue) but after he tossed La. Still, she felt pretty good about telling him off.Aivilo is one of the nicest and most helpful people I've encountered online... it seems like every time I've had a problem on TEFc she has been able to help me, and I am so grateful for that. So here is her deer Rire.Raizo for Terraminator. My part of an art trade. I drew him without the mask on his profile picture, in part because the mask isn't mentioned in his character description and there were a few other discrepancies between the picture and description. When in doubt, I always go with words. Blonde+purple flowers was fun.Oduvanchik and La shortly after their first meeting. La fears and mistrusts him, and this quick doodle illustrated a moment in a roleplay.Gift art. The character Jennie was a DJ in the past before she became an OOC deer, did you know that? Only if you read her old biography to the very end!La with caterpillar. Inspired by the way I often watch my sweet baby boy Howard The Tarantula in his tank.
Gift art. Tanpopo. <3 So cute. The emotion of sleepiness personified. For the Inspiration Blog.La with Nika in a hidden room in The Ruins, looking through books like study buddies. It was part of a roleplay.Gift art. Fundi. I truly adore the character's design, as a person who is in love with moths. An alien bird. For the Inspiration Blog.Fawn Vaq pranking La.

2010

My half of an art trade with Chaotic of their eponymous character.La reading under a tree. That book practically raised her.
Kheiron was one of the first deer to really interact with La take interest in her.La investigating the pagan statues. This picture used to have its own thread but I deleted it to consolidate here.

Images are sorted on the left by year (oldest at the bottom), then sub-sorted by how happy I am with how they turned out (smaller thumbnails are more sketchy or didn't happen like I wanted), and then again by the order in which they were made (newer stuff higher up). Sometimes I move images between the sketchy section and the better section due to indecisiveness.

WHAT IS THIS DOING HERE ANYWAY?

This blog collects things that I post in threads and biographies that would be hard to hunt down for anyone who wanted to look for them as well as pictures I make related to TEFc that never get posted anywhere else here. My other drawings and such are situationally placed--my pictures of Oak things are on the page about The Old Oak, things related to La's Glitch Skull are on the page for that, et cetera. La's biography page is a hub of all those so if you wander around there you'll find it. This page doesn't get bumped very often and when I add stuff I'm usually quiet so you'll probably have to track if you want to know when stuff changes.

If I make you gift art or draw your character for any reason you don't have to worry about crediting me if you ever use it places (unless someone asks I guess, you can be like "a deer friend of mine made it" and go the pun route, that's what I'd do) and you can use it wherever, whenever--it's your character and my personal philosophy dictates that I never be possessive of it. You can edit stuff I make for you however you want as well. It is yours forever.

TRADING?

Yes please! I like art trades and would like to do some of those now that I've got more time on my hands! I'm not the best but I have a lot of fun drawing just about anything, and I'll do an art trade with anyone of any skill level, and your part of the trade can be any kind of art you like. If you don't have a tablet or a scanner, I don't mind one bit if you snap a photo of your drawing (traditional art is my favorite anyway!). I'd ask you to draw my character La, whom you can interpret as creatively as you please, focus more on the background, draw her as a human or other animal, etc. I love all things.

Waiting on SilverSnow200

COMMISSIONS?

I hate the idea of me taking money for my digital art but I want to try to make money for the game because I have a general grasp of how expensive it is for M&A to run it, so if you want something from me that's big and complicated (I could even paint on a canvas and mail it to you, the only money I would want would be cost of canvas or paper and cost of shipping) I will do it non-profit so M&A can get more money for TEF. We can figure something out.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM

I love and need it. I'm an amateur hobbyist artist. Redlines and corrections of my anatomy/shading etc. are immensely appreciated.

OTHER WEBSITES?

Nope, except occasionally giving out anonymous art as a drawfriend in certain corners of the internet, none of which I save on my computer or sign or keep track of. People request, I doodle, I post, I delete it. Other than that, I mostly draw for myself outside of TEF, and mostly monsters. I used to be active on Colourlovers six-ish years ago, but left the community when the site really started trying to make money off of me. Now I just go there once in a while for utility.

I tend not to like art sites because they are usually too strict about their rules or they are just full of porn I do not want to look at or the site is obviously set up so that people can stroke their egos rather than share arts and get feedback.

@DeerUniverse Thank you. It's

@DeerUniverse Thank you. It's easier with computers to pick all the "good" colors than paints for sure because I always buy the cheap-ish paints that get muddy fast. ;_; But I do looove colors, especially mixing them and places where they overlap and flow.

@Silver I would love that. Laughing out loud Who should I draw this time?

@Kiki Thank you! I love Grass Runner <3 I imagine the red on his face is paint and without it he looks like your drawing. I want to draw him riding a motorcycle some time soon.

Can you do Peppino, please?

Can you do Peppino, please? Smiling

Yours is almost done I just have to color her, but no Valor does not have a Bio yet.
Things are still a bit rusty but he is a Hybrid.

I went through your art and

I went through your art and fell in love how much thought you put in them. I enjoy reading your descriptions and thoughts about every piece of work you make! You give every character a different approach with your style and choices of perspective - it makes the pieces very unique.

My super favorite is the newest one of Valor. I absolutely love the texture on their mask and antlers, and the strings and stars on the antlers look like they could be touched. I'm also very fond of La's design. I need to have a go drawing her at some point!

AlisonRobin's picture

@Silver Okay, I just wanted

@Silver Okay, I just wanted to make sure he didn't have one that I had neglected to follow. I like his star and moon trinkets a lot, kind of glad I wasn't trying to animate him though or they'd be swinging all over the place. I was imagining them jingling when he moves.

@Narina asdf you flatter me. Thank you so much for your kind words, they mean a lot coming from you Smiling I try to take different approaches to things because I figure I'll get bored if I do the same thing too much, or worse I'll get stuck doing the same thing too much and forget how to draw other things. I guess the other thing is that if I'm doing doodles for people I want them to know that I like to pay more attention to characters than how they look.
Silversnow200's picture

Yes I imagine them move and

I'm glad you still like it. On the airplane she was the only thing I could think to doodle.

Practice is good. I still need lots of practice myself. Smiling I have a bunch of detailed deer toys that I've been collecting that I use to look at how the legs work and stuff.
