“That's for the best. Otherwise they might realize they're in prison. It can't be helped. You women are used to harems and prisons. A person can spend his whole life between four walls. If he doesn't think or feel that he's a prisoner, then he's not a prisoner. But then there are people for whom the whole planet is a prison, who see the infinite expanse of the universe, the millions of stars and galaxies that remain forever inaccessible to them. And that awareness makes them the greatest prisoners of time and space.”
-Bartol

Before long everything goes dark, guided to the far above by a bright light far ahead. It came closer and closer, yet it appeared as unreachable and far away as ever.
Your body weighted down, breathless, you break the light disc.
And the sun blinds you.
All power you had mere seconds ago, gone. Movement slow, your head turns back to lavish in the light.
Life was to be gone.
Until snatched you were by eagle talons...
Your speech turned to water, giving you life.
A flash of emerald in the faint sunlight. The sounds of hefty wings beating frantically against the wind. A pair of keen talons pierced the veil into the world beneath the pond surface, sharp eyes fixated on something struggling beneath the thick spray of water. Pulling up into the open air above, an emerald beast rose with precious cargo in tow.
The scapular muscles along Deo's shoulders were tense and rippling beneath the feathers that trailed down from his neck and face as he scaled higher and higher into the sky, doing his best to avoid any and all obstacles in his way. Eventually, he cleared the trees and found himself soaring above the tree line altogether, pulling his talons close to his body. He could feel the limp body of the seemingly drowned equine in his grasp. He quickened the pace and made way for the piles of large rocks up ahead.
He gradually closed the distance between him and the heaps of boulders that made up the Playground, glad he had a seemingly safe spot to land. He dripped down, his rear hooves clicking and clashing down against the rock surface, ensuring that he'd land completely before setting down the limp equine below him. He stood over her, his wings slowly folding inwards as he gave the sapphire blue female a once-over. His front feet tapped the rocks underfoot with a sense of urgency as he waited for something. Some type of movement. Seconds felt like minutes as his intense gaze rested, unmoving, on the equine.
Was this paradise? These were not the fires of hell.
Her eyes looked down as she appeared to be lifted into the air, her legs limply waving about, water dripping from everywhere on her and within her. The pond was becoming smaller, the world was becoming smaller, flashing past faster and faster, trees deer, many deer and deer-like beasts.
Nothing like the world she knew... Memories came of gardens vast and wide, cheetahs, gazelles and horses.
These were different beasts.
Her eyes slowly closed, only to wake up again and see a marvelous beast in front of her.
"I-I." She lept back a bit, heaving water.
She knew what she did, and she believed that this was not her place. Not in life and in death.
"Eagle-beast," she rose up hastily, just to notice that she too was one of the many colourful beasts of this land. "What is this place?"
His fluorescent, crimson gaze was hidden briefly behind a blink, his entire body shifting slightly in reaction to the ocean-blue female spontaneously springing to life. He could see the pond water dripping from her lips as she leaped away from him, and the gryphon clenched his jaw a bit as he gathered himself. Eagle beast, she'd address him, what is this place?
Deo shifted his shoulders underneath his tucked wings, tail gently brushing the surface of the boulders behind him. "In the words of the locals," he started, voice rumbling within the depths of his feathered throat, "the Forest." He watched her silently, his eyes gleaming softly, their vibrant red illuminating the feathering along his face slightly.
Her head jittered a little amd her body trembled for a moment. She gazed deep into the distance, clouded by fog even though the weather was clear, before eyeing the great feathered one into the eyes.
"Heh. heh? ...Everyon speaks here..."
"This is no forest I know of. Who are you, why is...everyone like this?"
Generally, Deo was on top of things. That being said, it didn't take long for him to realize the blank stare being directed at him was one of confusion and unknowing. She wasn't a local. Out-of-worlder, most likely. He took her words quite literally, his dark crimson eyes scanning her expression and overall figure for a moment. She was equine in appearance, without a doubt, with some outer influences, of course.
"I take it you're referring to the fact that you've seemingly taken on a form different than the one you had previously. If that's the case," he'd continue, "what I've come to believe is that this particular dimension has a default being — more specifically one that's animal or animal-like in being." He paused. "And nearly everything in this bloody realm can talk."
Though it wasn't particularly noticeable, the gryphon was put off by the words she lass muttered. He hummed softly in the depths of his throat before answering, a bit hesitantly. "It depends." The gryphon himself was considered a gatekeeper of sorts, able to generate portals on command if he so desired. He refrained from using them loosely, however, and he knew in the back of his mind that he wouldn't be offering his services to this damsel in particular. There was too much mystery floating about her.
"Why do you want to leave?" he'd inquire, eyes flashing in the shadows of his sockets. He figured she had a good enough reason, but he would play dumb for the time being. At least until he got his bearings with the situation.
"I now know that there is no fiery hell." She muttered, waving herself left and right. She should've been in hell.
But she is not ablaze.
Her heart crumbled. "I need to be sent to heaven where my belowed is."
Her voice was firm, but it was clear that she was hurt.
The gryph spared her a small chuckle of amusement. Well, he'd think to himself, that's up for interpretation, isn't it? When mention of the damsel's "beloved" was heard, Deo's static expression seemed to soften every so slightly. "My sincerest apologies, Ma'am, but I'm not entirely sure how to help you in that aspect."
Heaven and Hell were two dimensions he had yet to discover for himself. Initially he'd believed them to be nothing more than fiction. But then places like this raise the question, is fiction really fiction at this point?
He reminded himself that she was most likely grieving, and so he changed his demeanor appropriately. "What's your name?" he asked her, voice coming off softer than typical.
She shook her little head a bit, her voice was very quiet, for she spoke to herself. "I will never meet him. He's in heaven with his virgins."
She then looked at him, the bird beast.
"My name is ..."
"I will not tell my name." She turned her head away, sighing.
He made seldom remark toward the female's words. Well someone's religious. He huffed softly at her response. Was she going to play hard to get? Bother. "Well, I'm not going to try and pry it from you," he rumbled smartly in reply. "But if you happen to need it at any point, my name is Deo." Crimson eyes continued to gleam brightly in their place upon his face, the red shine bouncing off his brightly-colored beak as he swayed his cranium here and there, trying to get a lay of the land around them. As if he were planning a take-off route.
