The Firefly Deer

quadraptor's picture
((Renamed from "The Brotherhood of Five" since that suggests that Hex is not part of the family or is not a sibling. And yes, this is a spinoff of Pega's "Dragonfly Deer", but I did ask for consent and she didn't seem to have a problem. I never had an official name for Quad and his siblings (and I may include Zephyr in here as well despite being a 2nd generation deer), and since they all have used light abilities to fight Iugulare, I thought it would be fitting as fireflies can produce light and are often shining in the dark. I've got a lot I still need to include in this so be patient.

Also if anyone has the time, I would love an artwork of Hex for here. Details are in the comments *nuzzles*))

THE FIREFLY DEER

History - Six siblings were created near the beginning of the Endless Forest as guardians of the light. They would be the protectors of the Forest whenever darkness would try to take over. When one of the siblings vanished, an evil force named Iugulare appeared and began to infect the animals of the Forest. The first Grand Talux, Caw, fought against the infection, but was captured and failed to defeat her. The Twin Gods were forced to destroy all they created and began the Forest once again, with Blixt becoming the second Grand Talux. When Iugulare invaded again, Blixt also failed to defeat her, and the Forest was destroyed and rebuilt a third time, Trunks becoming the third Grand Talux. He, too, failed.

The Endless Forest you see today is the fourth attempt, with Quad as the Grand Talux. If he fails, all of the deer who live in the Forest would be killed, and a fifth Endless Forest would be built with Pent as the Grand Talux. And if Pent failed to defeat the infection, the world would be surrendered to Iugulare.

Quad freed his older three brothers in one fight against Iugulare, who were brought back to the Endless Forest to live their own lives, but also to support him in the fight.

Themesongs -

ONE

Caw
"The Islander"
Element - Water
Themes - False Idol Worship, Banishment, Redemption
Species - Common Lechwe

History - A legendary stag who lived many years ago. He made the mistake of worshiping an idol in the Endless Forest, and was banished to an island as punishment. He had no recollection of his life before, but little by little he remembered after performing various tasks on the island, especially recalling that there was a doe in his life. He would discover his purpose when he protected baby turtles from being killed on the island, and for a hundred years he redeemed himself by continuing the task. He died on the island, being reunited with the doe he lost long ago...but given another chance, he walks again in the Endless Forest.

Caw was killed by three rock hounds, though there may be hope that he could return to the Endless Forest if he wins the Twin Gods' favor once again. Perhaps there is something he can do to fight against the rock hounds that the Twin Gods see in him.

In-game personality - I never fully developed his personality, but I tried to play him as kind of cranky, since he is supposed to be kind of an old stag. He would stomp his hooves quite often.

Stories associated - Banished

TWO

Blixt
"The Fallen One"
Element - Fire
Themes - Pride, Second Chances, Forgiveness
Species - Eld's Deer

History - At a young age, Blixt lived a happy life with his best friend, Dond. The two of them seemed inseparable...until a doe came into the picture. Trying to win her favor, the two stags contested with one another over her. At first they were only playing around, but when they began to realize that the other seriously wanted the doe for himself, the two began to bicker and argue. Soon Blixt and Dond fought antler to antler on a high cliffside, the doe crying out for them to stop their fight. She genuinely loved Blixt more, and with one mistake, she cost him the life he had. Dond took the opportunity to throw Blixt over the side of the cliff, taking the doe and leaving his former friend to die.

Blixt, barely clinging to life, was visited by the Twin Gods, and with their magic, they saved him from certain death. He awoke in the Endless Forest, not remembering anything that had happened before. His face had been deeply scarred by a tree branch from his fall, but it was covered by a green mask with lightning bolts on it.

Eventually, Blixt began to remember little details about his former life. He soon was visited by The Collector, who convinced him that his face was nothing to hide. Blixt removed the mask and gave it to the other, and soon meeting with Quad, he came to the realization that Dond would return to finish him.

Dond did return to the Endless Forest for his revenge on Blixt, and with a chance encounter with Iugulare, was given armor that enhanced his strength and reflexes. He found Blixt, and the two fought again, Blixt clearly unmatched. But the armor proved to be only a temporary gift, as it burst into Iugulare's infection, burning Dond. With his rival in agony, Blixt quickly asked Quad to cure Dond, and when Quad did so, the rival did not understand why he was saved.

Blixt had forgiven him long ago, and since then, the two stags became friends once more.

In-game personality - Blixt is played as a 'kind but serious' character. He doesn't laugh very often, and tilts his head when he doesn't understand what is going on. He is supposed to be my most 'aggressive' character, so when he sees a fight going on or if something annoys him, he may lower his antlers out of rage. But he does not intent to hurt anyone, he just occasionally has a short temper.

Stories associated - Hooves of Lightning, Masked Beauty, and The Final Clash

THREE

Trunks
"The Guardian Spirit"
Element - Air
Themes - Protection, Truth, Despair
Species - Pere David's Deer

History - Trunks lived a short life as a fawn in the Endless Forest before becoming a fatal victim to one of Iugulare's summoning rituals. He was killed at the Playground, and later was brought back to a semi-life as a ghost by the Twin Gods. He has been granted five years of service to the Twin Gods, and serves as a guardian and a guide to those lost. He often will guide fawns back to their mothers, and has been seeing helping recently deceased souls find their rest. He is a storyteller and often can show those who are suffering from depression or low self-esteem just how fulfilling life is.

Trunks has an official 'passing day' set on 4/16/2014, when he will have completed his 5-year service to the Twin Gods and will pass on to the next life. After that date, Trunks will no longer appear in the Endless Forest or in future stories.

In-game personality - Trunks loves to hang around fawns and nameless deer, and will often dance with them. He enjoys anyone's company, even if he has no idea who they are. He rarely gets angry, as it simply isn't his nature.

Stories associated - Through Your Eyes... and The Prince of Wisps, and also appears in The Divine Series

FOUR

Quad
"The Grand Talux"
Element - Light
Themes - Antihero, Courage, Sacrifice
Species - Blackbuck Antelope

History -

In-game personality - Quad is friendly and silly in the Forest. He frequently laughs and dances, and loves to tilt his head with his massive antlers. He tries to be friendly with anyone and everyone, but has a serious dislike for fighting. Whenever he sees two deer fighting in the Forest, he immediately tries to break it up by getting in the way and shaking his head. Quad generally will hang out with deer he knows but is always open to meeting new deer.

Stories associated - The Divine Series, but he has been featured in many other writings

FIVE

Pent
"The Treetalker"
Element - Earth
Themes - Strangeness, Prophecy, Solitude
Species - Pronghorn Antelope

History - Pent was born as a troublemaker at first, and loved to cause mischief around the Forest. One day he heard someone whisper to him, and unable to see any deer around, he discovered that the trees were talking to him. From that moment, he began to 'speak' to the trees, believing that they really are having conversations with them.

In-game personality - Pent is considered my most anti-social deer. He genuinely talks to trees in the game, and whenever someone approaches and bows or tries to interact with him, he will ignore him. You will always see Pent 'speaking' to a tree, sometimes laughing and dancing, other times getting angry and stomping his hooves depending on what the tree 'says' to him. If another deer approaches and 'speaks' with the tree as well, Pent will acknowledge them as 'one of his kind'. He frequently tilts his head at other deer.

Stories associated - The Flood, My Silly Friend, and also appears in The Divine Series

SIX

Hex
"The Fortuneteller"
Element - Darkness
Themes - Perseverance, Mysticism, Naivety
Species - Undetermined yet, but will probably be a Springbok but with dark colors as her fur has been light-deprived.

History - In the early years of the Endless Forest, Hex was a loner. She was afraid of her older brothers, and would not join in with their fun. So instead she hid away in a cavern she found, and began to see visions of the future. She wrote prophecies in pictograms on the walls of the cave, which would later predict events concerning the battle between light and dark that would come. One day, she met someone in the cave, a voice that lured her deeper into the darkness. When she approached, Iugulare captured her, dragging the doe to her own dark world. Hex was engulfed by the infection, and Iugulare was able to manifest and journey across the galaxy, ultimately landing on Earth where her invasion would begin.

Hex suffered for many years, trapped within Iugulare's infection. Her body was drained to a point of near-death, and she was in a coma-like state where a dream haunted her over and over...the day she was taken by the darkness.

On the day that Quad and Iugulare had their final battle, Quad was engulfed by Iugulare, and found Hex buried deep within the infection. He freed her, and with his light he destroyed Iugulare's manifestation. Hex, exposed to the world after countless years of being trapped, died by Quad's side, but a few years later would be reborn once again by the Twin Gods. She would finally get to enjoy her life outside of the infectious prison she suffered in for so long.

In-game personality - Hex has not been fully developed in-game, but she is generally very quiet and oblivious to what is going on. Since she is blind, she only reacts to sounds and touch - nuzzling, sniffing, and calling mostly, though she will often hear deer running by. She often will react in shock if someone runs 'through' her or if she is walking in a direction and 'bumps' into a tree. Generally she prefers to stand in one place or sit somewhere and meditate, though she will often call out to see who is around. She will react to calls and approach where she heard the sound come from.

Added more, also renamed

Added more, also renamed this. Mostly just have Quad's left to write (and I plan to include Zephyr as a 2nd-generation Firefly as she inherits Quad's Grand Talux abilities after his death). Also...

I really hate to ask, but could someone do me a huge favor and sketch/draw a head shot of Hex? I just need a drawing of her for this page. There's only a few details you'd need to know:

She does not have the yellow markings on her face, and the hand prints are part of her fur and not a mane or hair. Also her eyes are fogged/cloudy so she does not have pupils, and if you happen to add color to the picture, her eyes are an amber or yellow color.

Thank you!! *nuzzlenuzzlefreakingnuzzle*
