Fan art in the game!

Gooke6's picture
Hello there!
I am Margo Putzeys, a student Game- and Digital Design and I am currently doing my internship with Tale of Tales. I am still studying but I will be entering my Master year next schoolyear.
For my internship Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn asked me if I wanted to work with the players and make models and concept art together. And with great pleasure I accepted this of course! This means you will be able to add art to the game!

But there are some 'rules' attached to this: If you make a 3D model, pleas send it as an .OBJ file to me. But a .Blender file ( Blender's file extension ) would be even better! But a .OBJ is good as well! As for the concept art you can send a photoshop file, PNG of JPEG.

So what can you make? Well it's like a set that the deers can wear in the game! This set includes: a mask, antlers and a pelt. Both made for the adult deer AND the baby deer. You can (if some of you know how and want to) texture these models by using a UV map. If you do texture them, send texture files as a PNG. ( PNG supports transparancy )
But of course you are never obligated to making more than you like. The meaning of this task is also for me to make stuff, so if you only would like to make the adult deer's models, that's fine by me. I can always texture them, add models, etc.

So if any of you are interested in putting your art or 3D models in the game. Send them to me and I can adjust them if necessary or take a look if something needs to be changed and so on.
You can of course also send your concept art to me and I can realise that concept art into a 3D model which may have a chance to be put in the actual game: The Endless Forest!

My e-mail adres is : Margo.Putzeys@gmail.com. I hope I will be hearing soon from you guys!!

Greetings,
Margo

EDIT: from Michael and Auriea --
To be clear, we want Margo to do ALL of the modeling and ALL of the texturing. Because that is what her internship is about. YOU, players, are requested to send her concept art or point her to already existing concept art (on this very website, for instance). SHE can choose which concepts she models and textures. But WE, Auriea and Michaël, choose which go into the game. We hope there will be many!

I think a good idea would be

I think a good idea would be to let M&A know how much people support the idea of a Kickstarter. While they might read this thread, maybe people could encourage the idea on their new forums or via twitter.

How many TEFc members are

How many TEFc members are actually old enough or have the funds to complete a kickstarter though? If the goal was one or maybe two hundred dollars, maybe I could see it succeeding but I have serious reservations about trying to pool a larger sum. From what I remember seeing there are only roughly 25 members who actively purchase things (usually art or crafted goods). It would be unrealistic to assume such a small number of players would be able to supply a thousand dollars.

I would want to see more concrete evidence that we have enough players able to donate before Tale of Tales would go to all the work of formally setting up a campaign.

I'm afraid I have to agree.

I'm afraid I have to agree. My own funds are low, but I see this site, overall, as a good cause since it promotes a lot of good for people from therapy to just outright companionship and fun. I would love to put a payment into the site if I knew it would really help. Granted I only get $68USD/month to work with, for now anyway, but I would be happy to put half of that in when I can manage without it.
Verdalas's picture

The point of Kickstarter is

The point of Kickstarter is to have your project advertised though. The idea of Kickstarter would be to gain more supporters via the website. At the same time, more users would likely mean the small server would constantly be overloaded and therefore costs would increase to maintain this. It's a vicious circle.

Ugh I hadn't even considered

Ugh I hadn't even considered the point about advertising->new members->needing more funds.

I know that Tale of Tales originally got funding for the game through a art based grant...it might be worth looking into another? Especially if the beneficial and unique nature of TEF reflect what the sponsor is looking to promote. For anyone not familiar with grants, I'm not implying TEF should get a corporate sponsor as that would likely lead to adverts and such...that isn't an ideal solution.

Another question to consider:

Another question to consider: Is the game still art?

The way it has evolved might make potential investors see the Forest as not interactive art, but a form of social networking. Defining art is a very tricky thing to do and people are very picky about providing money.

I think at this point I'm nitpicking why things might not work out. >_>

I think with all the fan art

I think with all the fan art we do, our own character designs, CSS, and the fact they put OUR set designs into the game, would make it considered art. It's art-based. And I see many new artists starting out here, inspired to create their own thing and with such inspiration as Apel's, Sight's, and Mis' arts. How is it NOT an art?
SoliloquyChryseis's picture

The game is still art, but

The game is still art, but many people who play don't see it as such.

That's actually a good point

That's actually a good point Verdy brings up and I know for a fact that certain elements of the game have drifted from the 'non-game' definition that got ToT the grant in the first place.

Role playing characters is one of those things. Even though having characters leads to art being produced (and I feel is a strong reason behind the overall vibrancy and high quality of community content), it does make TEF similar to many other online animal role play games. TEF could still be considered art, but it has evolved into more of a game and less an interactive virtual art piece. Of course nothing about the actual game mechanics has been altered by TEFc, SO the argument could be made that the artistic nature of the game is still fully intact, it is just how the perceptions of the Community that have altered.

...I'll end the art student ramble there but yeah...fund raising will definitely be a tricky challenge.

edit: fffff omg SoliloquyChryseis said exactly what I've implied in a far less long-winded way.

Deyna's picture

What the TEFc thinks about

What the TEFc thinks about the game has never changed the Forest at all (which I imagine is what ToT will be focused on, not the website), except perhaps in the ability of saving sets.

The Kickstarter is a great idea. It will help get the game out to a much broader audience, as well as put Tale of Tales in the spotlight, not just for TEF but their other creations as well. If a success, We'll get lots of new members, yes, and with it will hopefully come the money to increase the servers as well as any game updates.

Even if we never do the Kickstarter, the game is still growing regardless, so we'll eventually need better servers anyways. It will be much easier to get the money if we have more members.

Verdalas's picture

Deyna - That's a very good

Deyna - That's a very good point regarding the growth of the server.

The other issue with Kickstarter is that the general idea is to provide supporters with something for their contribution. The Endless Forest is about making people's deer all equal so providing anything in-Forest would sort of go against the ideals. Creating products outside of the game would possibly mean yet more funds needed.

Perhaps exclusive/signed concept art from the game's designers? idk, I'm kinda tired.

I have to admit.. I adore the idea of a kickstarter but it also scares me. What if we DO get a bunch of new players but we don't raise enough money for a server that can support the new load? Could take a nasty turn and have quite an adverse effect.. hate to be the negative one here, I'm usually all rah-rah about the idea of raising money for the game but I have to admit this thought has crossed my mind on numerous occasions :[

They could just disable picto

They could just disable picto creations, not accept new players like Flight Rising has done, till they CAN support it.

And with that said....a new gen of pictos would be needed if ti comes to a noob wave like that. Noobnami. Noobnado. Noobquake. Have your choice, lol.
Xemi's picture

^ My only concern with that

^ My only concern with that is.. why donate to a game you won't be able to play? I guess they can get on as namelesses, but.. what I mean is, anyone who's been around here long enough knows what a strain 20 or 30 extra players in the forest does to the server.

Apeldille mentioned this regarding a post of mine on money and TEF:

Quote:
But as it is, they use their own money to fund the servers, since not enough people donate. How many companies would do that? I think it's just the realistic aspects working against them. I think we're talking about tens of thousands dollar sums here, likely more, for an overhaul :/

Some googling shows that the average multiplatform big game budget is 28 million dollars. Of course TEF is nowehere close to that, but well. Games are damn expensive to make.

The community has nothing to do with game aesthetics. It's still art.
The community site is also an option, not a requirement to be a part of, and interact with the forest, characters, and people.

The game is still, and always will be art, no matter who comes and goes, no matter what trend comes stomping through.
M/A aren't stupid. I highly doubt they would let it become anything else.
After all, that is their vision. Interactive art.
It's how they want this game to be perceived and approached by players and potential visitors.
Those that have no interest in art won't find this game very fun or interesting, which we've witnessed already in the past.
It takes a certain kind of person to like a human-faced deer, lol.

If M/A felt that their vision, the core of this game as interactive art died, I'm pretty sure they would have shut it down already.
SoliloquyChryseis's picture

TEFc was an afterthought, it

TEFc was an afterthought, it wasn't part of the initial game. It's still and always will be an art, but there is more of a demanding to the game now. If you don't have a character or on the comm., you're likely to be ignored by people. At least I have seen that happen.

Now I find it funny how many

Now I find it funny how many people focus on rp and community site while totally ignoring the game itself. I used to feel like a loser here, because of my language barrier I wasn't able to rp much. I was ignored A LOT and was alone most of the time. Something inside me changed in those years, I grew up and now don't really give a damn. I love this game too damn much to care. I play this game for my own good so yeah. C:..

About the kickstart, I think TEF don't need it. It's good the way it is and there would be only server problems if more ppl joined, more mooing, lag, etc.. There are donors that support server and I think it's already a lot of support. I am cautious about all the new things added to the game too because new things slightly change an aura of the game. I want A&M to listen only to themselves and be selfish with all of their decisions. They are doing a great job already so here's no need to mix in more colors to the palette.
