Although Tails was an ordinary fawn in many respects, he was always very kind and very clever, and thus he was admired by most of his herd. Both of his parents were travelling souls, and once he was old enough to survive, they left him in the care of his older brother, a stag three years older than he was. Tails adored his brother, and it was from him that he acquired his name, a commentary on the markings of his pelt. However, as Tails grew up, his antlers grew in strange twisted shapes instead of the proud tines of a stag. Despite this, he did not allow himself to grow bitter at misfortune, and instead made the best of his situation.

Even with his horns, Tails was a handsome young stag, and his brother soon became jealous at the attention he received from many does. Tails himself was oblivious to the attention, and while he sometimes thought about having a fawn of his own one day, he could never contemplate the necessary steps to this event. His only loves were his brother and his herd as a whole.

On a day like any other, Tails was approached in his forest by his brother and several other older stags. His brother was jealous, and he and his gang suddenly attacked a bewildered Tails, forcing him to defend himself. In doing so, he caused serious damage to one of the stags, damage enough to render the stag mentally unstable. When the other deer of the herd found out about this, they turned on Tails and drove him from their forest.

Alone and confused, Tails wandered until he was exhausted and lay down in the hollows of a giant oak. When he awoke from a confusing night filled with dreams and nightmares, he found that the entire landscape had changed, morphing into a peaceful and sun-filled place.
