As for the spirit look, I think you did well, it gets the message across. You could always try making it a semitransparent silhouette, to balance out the lines. But as I said, I don't think it's needed.
This picture still makes me sad, but you did a good job with it. I really like their poses and the size difference between them, and I could tell right away that Hoshiko was but a ghost, unfortunately. Nice work, Kimipants.

I agree with everyone else, you've done a good job of making Hoshiko look like a spirit, I could tell straight away as well and Kaoori's expression is so sad, yet you've drawn it lovely ^^
