That beam of light (more like the deers shining) is Forest Magic. You can cast Forest Magic on another deer by gaining a spell. Each spell changes a different part of the deer you choose to cast it on. The four different spells you are able to cast are: pelt, antlers, mask, form. As a fawn you cannot keep any of these spells (when performed on you) for very long.
It takes you one month, or about 30 days. So, if you signed up on the 10th of a month, for example, you would grow up on the 10th of the next month. You don't have to play every day or anything.
Also, don't panic if your deer doesn't grow up on the exact day that you predicted! Just wait a few more days and it should be fine.
