The fawn awoke, her eyes fluttering open like a butterfly's millifiori wings.
The flower patch lay spread before her, a million flowers like a million stars coursed along the ground. As if under a drought of poppy, the fawn awoke so slowly that minutes seemed like hours. Her ears were the last to awake, sharply trouncing her with bouts of sound. It did not feel good. Jupiter pressed her ears to her skull to drown out the sound, but it did not help any. Her hearing was too acute, it seemed. And... well, Jupiter's eyes would not wake up all the way. She no longer could see the very edge of her flower patch.
The very tiny edges of her vision would not un-blur. Rubbing did not help, blinking did not help. The fawn was scared. Something was so wrong, so so wrong. The fawn daintily crept to her hooves, making her way to the Crying Idol. The water's cold mist greeted her harshly, soaking her fur til it clung to her sides.
Jupiter still made her way under the rushing tears. Her hooves dug in to the mud, body trembled beneath the onslaught of water. It soaked and chilled her to the bone, but she would not get out, not until her eyes and body were clean. Her head tilted back, breath held hitched in her throat, an opened her eyes against her instincts. The icy water burned. It stung, and she sharply in-took what she hoped to be air... and coughed, swallowed more, choked.
Her body trembled as she crawled free, hitching and coughing, then collapsed in the poppies and moss next to the rumbling stone statue. She convulsed, vomiting acid and water.
Jupiter still was afraid to open her eyes. She was afraid that the blurriness would still be there. And so the fawn lay on the ground, shivering, with the stone and water roaring in her ears.
(This is a closed RP between Quad's Hex and my Jupiter only. Please respect that.)
She wandered slowly, her eyes
The blind doe was patient. She could hear the water growing louder and louder with each step, until at long last she felt the ground slope downward. She cautiously put one hoof down and went into the stream, the Crying Idol roaring next to her now.
Hex bent down and lapped the cooling water. She had to make sure she drank some water each day, despite preferring to stay in the comfort and familiar area of the Playground. She luckily knew the way and direction to take, as the sound of the Crying Idol's water was easy to catch with her ears. Finding her way back was always more difficult, but she relied on her snout to guide her back to the birch trees.
Her ears perked, and she sat up. She caught a whiff of someone close by. Actually, she could sense them, it was a strange blessing she had. She saw within the darkness of her eyes a slight glimmer, a silhouette...the shape of a young one laying still...
"Little one...are you awake?", she spoke with a soft and gentle voice that was nearly drowned by the roaring water.
The fawn sniffed, jolting
"Mhm... I'm just scared to open my eyes is all." The female's smell wafted toward her as a calming mix of forest and herbs. The fawn shifted a little, her now-dried fur crackling where the riverbank had clung to it. The sound was not very pleasing, like rubbing bark together only more faint.
Jupiter was fascinated by the doe's voice, her ears finding it a balm in comparison to the high-pitched annoyances of the other fawns and the sharp moos of other adults.
As the moss and flowers shivered, she again settled in much the same location, but a more alert position. The roar of the falling water was permeated by a sharp click as one of her hooves struck the rock. For the first time, the fawn could feel the bump jolt through her. The noise and the bump were more unpleasant sounds. Not many sounds in the forest were pleasant to the young one, who was still adjusting to a hearing level that most would find deafening. At least she wasn't deaf like her father.
"I'm Jupiter. Ah... I don't mean to be rude... but... I can't see your pictogram... what is your name?" The fawn's voice was small, but she hoped that it would reach Hex. Jupiter, eyes closed, did not know of the other's heightened senses. She did not know Hex was blind.

The doe smiled, locking onto
The doe took a few steps away from where the water was flowing. She turned around, "Come this way, little one..."
The fawn stood, apprehensive.
"I can hear you, Hex. Not a lot of people can hear me, though. I am glad you can hear me."The fawn smiled, her skin prickling in happiness that someone could hear her. It was wonderful, and always made the fawn excited. She had to refrain from hopping, though, for fear of losing Hex.
The fawn kept close enough to the doe to feel her body-heat and the little electricity that each body carried, but not brushing against her. The fawn knew that she could cause another to stumble if she walked too close, and after being around Nikodim so much she also understood she could get knocked around by the other's legs.
"Someplace quieter would be nice... everything is too loud lately." Her body was adapting, though she didn't know it. The small slow steps of the patient doe seemed strange to the fawn, but she was not at all upset about the pace. Jupiter still kept her eyes closed, and she couldn't see where she was going like normal. She was so scared to open them. Would the blurry-edges still be there? Would they be worse?

The fawn gratefully flopped
Her sight was like opening her eyes underwater. You could never see the periphery of your vision, but could see straight ahead and a little to each side just fine. It was pretty scary to her, though, not being able to see things she used to see.
The fawn focused for the doe's voice, hearing the little hitch in her breathing that happened right before her speaking....

"'Blind' is when you cannot see much of anything anymore. I am blind. I used to see the beautiful world around me a long time ago, but someone took my sight. It sounds as if you may be heading to the same place I am...", she spoke quietly, "But you may yet still be able to see, at least part of the world around you. It's okay, little one. Be brave and open your eyes, just to look at me."
Hex's face gently nudged the tip of Jupiter's snout, so she was absolutely certain that she was face to face with the fawn. "Do not be afraid. Just open your eyes and tell me how well you can see my face..."
((Hex wants to see if Jupiter is possibly near-sighted, or if her eyes are blurry regardless of how close an object is))
Blind meant you could not
"O...kay..."
The fawn slowly opened her eyes, and they started to focus. Milliseconds seemed like minutes before she could see the face of the doe, her glazed eyes. But she could not see the edges of her face. The fawn knew now that the blurriness would not go away.
"It's still there... I can see you, but not the edges of you... those are blurry. Am I really going to the direction of blind? I don't know how to be blind. I was all stumble-y following you with my eyes closed... and I want to see flowers. I always want to see flowers, Hex."
The fawn seemed to be begging a little. It was a scary thing, losing her sight. She wanted to be able to see flowers. She loved the flowers.

"Shh...", Hex's gentle shush
"I do not know what the Twin Gods have planned for you. You may lose your sight as I have, you may get better, or you may have blurred eyes from now on. But what you can do is be strong no matter what happens. Your body is perfect and beautiful just as it is, don't ever forget that."
The fawn bit her lower lip,
"I need... to learn how... because I don't think that it's going to get better. It's in the low part of my belly... the feeling when something is bad... like when Nikodim was gonna get hurt by those scary monsters... that feeling."
The fawn thought out loud, half a statement toward Hex. Her eyes were not going to get better. She couldn't cry, though, because she would not be able to see. Hex said to be strong, so she would. Jupiter gathered herself, straightening her neck and perking her big fawn ears. They drooped a bit as she thought about her predicament, but still stayed above down.
"Can you teach me... how to be blind? I want to be perfect at being blind, cause you say that we're perfect. Cause if I can be perfect, you must be."
The fawn's logic was flawed, showing her age... perfect was non-existent, but in losing one thing one could gain another. THAT she would learn sooner rather than later. Jupiter let her tail flop from beneath her rump, showing the fluff-ball resting between the flowers. It was already a dark nighttime-blue-black, betraying her future pelt to appear like the doe's.

Hex smiled just a little,
She placed a hoof outward and gently tapped the flower bed before finding one of Jupiter's hooves. "First, place your hoof into the ground, and dig just a little. Let the dirt surround your toes...and just relax...", she did this as well, hoping the fawn could at least feel what she was talking about, "Feel the world all around you from beneath your hooves. Do you feel them? There are deer in the distance, running...the vibrations in the ground tell us where they are..."
((totally stole that from Bambi 2 ))
The fawn listened. Hex
Hex pressed the fawn's hoof to the ground, dirt squishing between her cloven toes. She could feel the constant rumble of running deer, some closer and some further away judging by how forceful the rumble was. Closing her eyes, Jupiter put all of her focus in to feeling that rumble.
"So many rumbles!" Jupiter grinned, her eyes remaining closed but creased at the corners in a smile. She could feel the rumbles, but she could feel other rumbles of not-deer...
"But I can feel the river, too. Are you really really blind near there?" If she couldn't feel the rumbles, how did she know when other deer were approaching her by the river? Surely right there at the edge of the stone statue the rumble would drown everything out.
"What else do I need to know to be blind, Hex? How do you know where you're going? I mean, you don't stumble hardly at all!"

"You will learn over time
"Now, as far as finding a sense of direction, you use your nose to guide you. Take a deep breath through your nose. Do you smell the water in the air? That tells you that you are close to the Pond. As you walk, you will catch different smells all around, and you can use them to tell where you are in the Endless Forest.", she nodded here, taking a whiff of the air, "We are currently close to the old Crying Idol, which is obvious, but I can also smell both birch and pine trees. We are right near the edge of the Birch Forest. If you start to smell the musty scent of oak, you are close to the Old Oak. If you catch the smell of moss, you should be near the Playground. If you smell poppies, you should be close to the Ruins. If you smell the sweetness of blueberries, then you are at the Blue Bowl. Finally, if you smell ferns, you will be at the Twin Gods' hill. The entire Forest can be distinguished by smell."
She nudges Jupiter's nose, "You will get used to the smells and find your direction easily. The land is here to help you in many ways."
So she had to use her nose?
"The whole thing? " The fawn seemed a little confused, but it seemed logical.
"But... I think I kinda will miss pictograms... they don't have a smell. But deer have smells. I cam sometimes remember someone's pictogram if I can smell them or hear them. I have to meet as many deer as possible so I can remember EVERYBODY!" The fawn stomped her right hind hoof, giggling that she could hear her own hoof beat.
"What about running around? Can you do that? I'd be scared of running in to things..."
(sorry for the short, late reply. Busy day.)

Hex nodded, "You will learn
The doe tilted her head at the question, "Of course you can still run around, remember that the Twin Gods have made the trees in such a way that we can pass through them...their magic works wonders for us in this Forest.", Hex replied
She then nuzzled one of the fawn's ears, "You also can rely on your ears to hear all around you. Listen closely, what do you hear?", she instructed the fawn.
Hex listened herself, not telling Jupiter what she heard - the gentle brush of the wind on the flowers, the roaring water from the Crying Idol, the distant chime of the Old Oak, and even the soft fluttering of butterflies over their heads. She wanted to see how much of this the fawn could hear herself.
((Hey no rush, take all the time you need! ))
The fawn listened,
The fawn described as she listened: "I hear.... the crying idol crying... the water running in the river... someone's running through a tree somewhere. I hate that noise. Fawns are yelling, a skull deer is yelling... running all over the place! I hear a squirrel, the frogs on the pond are croaking and jumping... OW!" The fawn shrank back for a moment, before continuing. "Someone just cast a spell. That sound really really hurts. Oh! And trees are creaking, swaying cause of the wind so their leaves whisper... and the Old Oak is singing. And there was thunder at De Drinkplaatz. Deer must be playing there... I wonder if they will see a flying fish."
The fawn smiled shakily, focusing on the song between the Oak and the other trees to calm her ears. They were overloading, and with one focus she tried her hardest to bring them down. Her right rear hoof again stomped, tail swishing violently, and her body was swaying slightly to try and get back in to rhythm. It was an odd thing, but it kept her from crying out in overwhelming stress.
"Too many sounds, Hex... but they do feel better when I close my eyes. Will I still be able to see the stars, Hex? Can all blind deer see the stars still?"

"Good, good...you are doing
The doe did not seem to know the best way to respond to Jupiter's other questions. "You may, or you may be given your own gift. Not every deer is exactly the same. I can see starlight because the Twin Gods gave me the gift, so I could predict the future for others. You may be given your own special gift, something I do not have. From what it sounds, you may have a gift in your hearing, for you were catching many things I did not."
The fawn smiled, standing
"Hex... The Gods... you must have talked to them, right? I mean, to know all the stuff about what gifts are, and all. What does their language sound like?" The fawn opened her eyes, blurred edges with sharp centers to see the doe as the pair stood in the flowers. Hex's fur gave off that warm and welcoming scent, and the fawn committed it to memory. Hex.
No more of that. She had to focus now, listen.

"The Gods? Why they sound
In any event, they are kind and polite, their voices are gentle and wonderful. You should never fear them, for they brought each of us here for a purpose. If you ask them, they may tell you what gifts you have and what they would like you to do with them. It was what I did to understand that I am to tell the future to my fellow deer."
Hex's body shifted just a little, she took in the scent of lavender and exhaled in a peaceful manner. The doe gave off a strong presence of harmony, and for good reason. Being tormented and imprisoned within darkness for so many years, her freedom was a great blessing, and she is thankful for every day she lives and breathes in the world around her.
So... they were like us.
"They don't listen to me when I ask. They don't talk to me. I don't smell them, see them, hear them... they ignore me. That's why I am so unsure of being blind... why they did not help me learn anything."
The fawn felt drained a little, but gathered herself up. It was something that might always be there, the upset of not having the Gods by her sides as most deer did.
"Hex? Thank you. I was so scared of my... blindness when I met you."
The fawn nuzzled Hex, her friendliness and gratefulness radiating from her very core.

She smiled here, "Blindness isn't all that scary. It's not the end of the world. Rather, it's just an inconvenience, a minor flaw in our growth. But what we do with it is what makes all the difference. Remember, we are all special and have a purpose in this Forest. And with that hearing, I bet you will be amazing in the future...", the doe raised her eyes to the sky, "The stars are not out at the moment, but maybe when the night comes, I'd be happy to read your future and see what may happen."
Night had come, and the sky
The fawn jumped a little,
"The stars are talking? What do they say? Is it a lot?"
Questions, questions, questions. The fawn was full of them. The stars were talking about her? Why did they do that? How did they talk, anyway? Did they have mouths? All of the words ran through her head like a pack of wolves after a herd of elk. She had to keep the wolves at bay, though, and keep herself from asking all the questions that kept building. Quietly she tapped her right rear hoof, taking in a deep breath to calm herself. She had to be quiet to listen to Hex.
"Umm... can I ask them... what I am going to look like when I grow up?"
Was that even allowed?

Hex chuckled just a little,
"To answer your question, you will appear to be someone not taken seriously, but this is not such a bad thing. It simply means you are of pure heart and mind that you are, how do they say, 'down to Earth'? Seriousness is not always a desirable trait anyway, sometimes people are seen as rude or mean when they are very serious. But you will be seen as pleasant and beautiful in the eyes of others, and what you have to say will be heard and understood by the ears of many.
There is more the stars say for you. You will be more than successful in learning the skills I taught you earlier. You will not only learn how to harness your senses, you will master them well.
Finally, there is one last thing the stars speak. You will find many new friendships in this Forest, for your ears as they are sensitive also make you a wonderful listener. You will discover that your eyes will reveal the true nature of many here, you will see some who are brimming with a strange glow, and others who are not so bright. Those who glow the brightest will be your most loyal and greatest friends."
Hex looked down to her, and with a nod, she said, "Even now, you should see that glow when you look upon me. Because I may not see you fully, but I see a beautiful aura, and I know much about you simply from that."
