Suzume's First Day

Day #1

Suzume

I arrived in the forest, meeting a friend who eventually vanished into the unknowns of this...Endless Forest. I feel vulnerable, but my old habits will bubble up eventually. I've already seen a white and brown stag fighting. My little body felt excited, blood boiling too see the spar till the end. But, it ended up in a chase and I got distracted by another being. Oh well.

Eventually, I began noticing these two stags more and more in the Forest. I never did catch the white's picto, but the other one had a strange almost...Rocket-like pictogram. Quite strange, but memorable. I was quite nosy about them and attempted to keep up with their games of chase. I failed most of the time, my damned little legs!

I found the brown stag laying around and decided to give him a nosy sniff. Boy, did it turn into a sniff-fest. Didn't mean it to get that nosy! Ahhh, nonetheless I decided to nap for a bit. This forest was getting rather relaxing. At least the ferns were comfy in comparison to the cold ground.

When I awoke, I began to wander around, partially looking for the two stags and partially exploring. I eventually found them and they ran. I found them again. They ran. Had I insulted them? I admittedly was quite sad and disappointed, I had thought I had made a friend or two, but apparently not..Harruumph! Be that way, boys!

New Friends

You can scarcely breath here...
It's not the air, it's all the colors and all the trees and all the deerfolk that seize me. Sometimes, I hold my breath and just watch, afraid to breathe lest the sound disturb the forest's song. Other fawns pranced gayly through the meadow and called out to me. I would join them soon enough, but right then a butterfly was beckoning.

She was a very small thing, fluttering quietly in shades of teal and white. No matter how hard I strained my ears, I couldn't understand her words. The forest was constantly whispering in a language just beyond my understanding. So right there in the flower patch, I resolved the learn it.

Despite my attempts to speak butterfly, my new friend flew off, perhaps I offended her. No matter, I would give her some time, and come back later to try again. Shaking flowers free from my pelt, I rose, looking around for something to catch my interest.

Eventually, I had made my way back to the lake and gingerly stepped in. The water was cold today, its nearly frozen surface collecting the white flakes from the sky. Despite the change in weather and inevitable passage of time, the sun never moved from it's position in the sky. But then I wondered "Should it?" and found I didn't know.

Declining a bath today, I made my way toward a group of older deer. They're pelts dazzled my eyes and their masks shifted around as they cast spells upon each other. Excited, I joined in, spending countless time trying out new voices. Strangely enough, I found I preferred to go without a mask... And I might as well, because mine kept slipping off after a while. Bored with the mask game, I followed a nearby deer, wondering where they were going.

The white deer greeted me warmly, seemingly glad to have a tag-along. I was overjoyed to find the older creature was perfectly happy dancing and jumping along with my young energy.

[2021 UPDATE] Years in the future, but not many...

Hey all, it's been a long time.

I don't know if anyone remembers me- my username used to be Ookani and this used to be my fuzzy caribou character, Zelig. People did art of him and I made a few friends and watched a lot of amazing characters grow and change over the years here. It's amazing to see some of you still around- I'm so glad to see the community is still going strong.

I go by the username Scribblescruff, Scruffy for short, now, which is a lot more me. If anyone fancies catching up, reply below! Or contact me on Skype alternatively by that username. I'm thinking of getting a new character started or at least spending a bit of time in the Forest as a bit of a detox. Life is pretty hectic at the moment. Sometimes you just need to be a deer.

Hope you're all well. Would really love to hear back from anyone that was kicking about when last I was here!

Leaving all that up for posterity/archival but a lot of it needs updating, see below.

Wake Up, Little One

I awoke in the forest.

Not a forest... THE forest. The forest with sun, trees, and birds everywhere. The forest with flowers whispering in the wind, where and butterflies chased each other with reckless abandon. My eyes could barely take it all in, the world was so big, so vivid! Slowly, as my eyes adjusted, a tall blurry shape took the form of a tree. So transfixed was I by this site, I didn't even realize I was inching toward it. My long, spindly legs unfolded on their own accord, bearing my weight for the first time. Of course, they gave way the first time, and the second... On the third attempt, they held.

Everything was quiet and peaceful, allowing me the time I needed to understand myself a little more. I had 4 legs, could walk, stop and lay down. If I pushed myself a little harder, my feet would carry me swiftly in any direction! But I was prone to falling on my face when stopping.

A friendly rabbit led me through the quiet thicket, until we exited the trees to see a truly breathtaking sight. Water, so much water! The lake shimmered and seemed to go on forever, hypnotizing me with its rippling surface. I stepped forward...

And suddenly the shore was alive! A flash of orange and black stopped me in my tracks as a doe darted past, disappearing into the water with a splash. Startled, I reared back and dashed into the forest, running for my life. There were so many colors and sounds, I didn't know what to do!

My headlong dash was brought to a halt by a sudden collision. With the sound of a distant storm, an older deer whispered his greeting. He was a tall, dark stag whose antlers were adorned with glimmering candles, whose eyes told me nothing and everything at once. When he bowed, I followed suit, learning and growing from that moment on.

With a regal nod, turned into the woods, bidding me to follow.

I did.
