Due to some events over the past few days I feel like this needs to be said. Please do not call any names, If you know what I am talking about. This has to do more than with just the past few days. It is an observation I have made since I have been on this website. So here goes.
What makes art..art?
The answerer differs from person to person. But here is my honest opinion on art in general.
When you draw something it’s not about how good it is, there is no such thing as bad art. Art is about doing something that makes you happy. What makes a picture considered art, is how much thought you put in it, and how hard you worked.
Is it discouraging when you draw something and post it, and it gets 1 or no comments, yes…but that is not the point!! Comments are just words. Yes they are nice but at the end of the day what matters is how YOU feel about your art. If you don’t like it no big deal work harder you are only going to IMPROVE.
It took me many years to get to where I am today, and guess what there are still people who are better artist than me. Some are even years younger than me! Does this make me upset?? NO! I admire those people!! They have gone places with their art that I have yet to reach and all I can say is wow, and work harder to improve myself.
I hate seeing comments like “well this is not very good but..” on peoples work. (I have been guilty a few times of this myself)
So here it is!
If you did it by yourself, and tried hard then it is GOOD!
Criticism is a good thing. You should not be discouraged by criticism. It should only make you work harder. You will be a better artist and person for it.
This is my main point if you get nothing else out of this……
Has attention got so important that it has become ok to take credit for other people’s art??
Why do we feel as if we need to impress some one?
Any time you tamper with some ones picture that they worked hard on. It HURTS. It has happened to me over the years. When you see that someone has stolen or modified your art it HURTS.
I’m sorry but I had to get that off my chest I hope no one wants to kill me. I will most likely delete this soon.
No, Firedance... Do not
As you have said, Firedance, it is not the words that matter; it is the feeling, the sense of accomplishment, you get afterwards! Look at the picture you made! Whether or not anyone has the sense of generosity to compliment your art, it is beautiful nonetheless, and every strand of effort has made it unique, individual, special.
Again, I quote Firedance when I say one should not copy/modify the art of others. It is a blow to their pride and their passion; it is theft, and it is rude. If you create your art without using/distributing that of someone else's, it is great art! Just because it does not look like another's drawing or painting makes it no less wonderful.
Again, with effort, with patience, with time and with care, you can only improve.
Thanks for the words, Firedance.
Oh man, I could go on
While I have to disagree with your philosophy that anything anyone creates is art (I am of the belief that art has to be made with the intention of being art for it to be considered art)...however that does not mean whatever was created cannot be beautiful or meaningful! Really that's the only thing I disagree with you on and it's such a small point that I can wholeheartedly throw my support behind this blog.
Frankly, art is made for one of two reasons (or a combination of the two);
a) to invoke a response in the viewer.
b) to express some form of emotion or idea from the artist.
Now art of the second type could very well sit in a shoebox and never be shared with anyone, and the artist would (in theory) be entirely content with absolutely no feedback at all. The other form however, requires a second pair of eyes, otherwise the piece can never for-fill it's expressed design.
What I'm trying to get at I guess (so much for keeping this brief >_<) is that by uploading their art and choosing to share it with us, people are requesting feedback. I am astounded time and time again however, by how many people who upload art are confused into thinking that simply because someone sees their art, that viewer is magically required to comment. Just to put that into perspective, imagine if everyone followed this rule at an art gallery...not only would it take them FOREVER to get through just one exhibit, but they would be forced to comment even on pieces they did not find interesting.
As someone who draws or paints or sculpts, and especially if you're going to call yourself an artist, you have to get used to the idea that there will be people who are just not going to care about what you do. If anything, this should make you value those who do connect with your creations all the more closely.
Woo, ok, that was only the first topic you brought up and already my comment is huge lol. I think I'll leave it at that, since I agree completely on your criticism views. I've also not really had enough experience with art theft so I can't really form an opinion on that.
Oh, I thought of another thing I disagree with...you deleting this. Don't feel you should or are required to!
Terabetha, I agree not
Crimsongale thank you. You summed up the point I wanted to make with this. Thank you for your kind words and opinion.. <3
I could write a book on my
EDIT: sorry double post.
yaaay the blog stays It
It isn't often I get to talk about art other than school, so forgive me if my wording is a little...staunch lol.
Thanks Firedance, for giving me the chance to share and hear some other opinions!
