A small part...

The thing holding up the small doe's body was no longer her own legs, muscle or bone. It was the rage and sadness that boiled inside her. Rage for the sick creature that had brought this down on her happy family, and sadness because of the definite knowledge that her newborn fawn, her first and last, would never know his mother.

Calmness overtook the doe as she charged the black buck, her unspeakable anger, gone. As her delicate head made contact with the deer's side, she whispered a goodbye, for she had done her best. The small mother's body fell to the sodden earth with a soft thud, neck shattered by the same force that had knocked the buck out cold. Minutes later, a fawn's voice cried. "Mama?" it said. "Mama?"

Hours later, after the huge buck had staggered out of sight, the dark hues of oak and charcoal ebb away as rays of sunlight dance over the still fawn's coat. A soft grey antler prods the dappled baby as a grieving buck tries to wake his young son. The fawn shifts and opens his strikingly green eyes, trying to comprehend what he had seen the night before; his mom, killed by a shadow of a demon. With a shudder, he tried to rise. The large male quickly ushered him away from the shell of the beautiful creature he had once called his partner.

Seasons would pass, slowly melting the doe's body back into the earth. She would always be there, but you have to wonder, where is her son?
