A sketch, I don't share these often.

Sighthoundlady's picture

I never share my sketches. One, because I usually draw in photoshop and end up deleting the sketch layer and Two, my sketches are usually quite embarrassingly messy. This was one that I happened to draw one slow day at work a few weeks ago, I had nothing but a cruddy blunt pencil and no eraser. I wanted to play around with concepts for the secretary antlers.

This is really pretty! I love the pose as well as the detail of the fur.

And honestly, for a sketch this is better than anything I can draw. I know artists can be critical of their own work sometimes but I really think this is great work!

My eyes keep focusing in the rear because I just love how it's shaped. That tail, too. c:

quadraptor: Thanks so much. Yeah, honestly most of my sketched just aren’t something I want anyone to see, I’m embarrassed! LOL! Thanks though ^^

bluejay17: Hurr Durr. Thanks ^^

jala: Thank you! I love the elegant curve of a deer back when laying down and the way the back legs fold up. Difficult to capture.

Snowsauria: Thank you ^^

Even your sketches are incredibly clean. Mine have about 400 times the extraneous marks.
Nice work on the hips and legs in particular.

eyestrain: Thank you! I assure you though, this is completely a fluke, lol! Most my sketches are messy, messy, messy. I ruin paper, erasing and erasing. Why I do most of my sketching digitally.

Holy cow, am I slow; I just noticed this! *facepalm* I don't think I've ever seen a sketch of yours, and I have to say this is lovely! The pose is wonderful; I can't stop staring at the rump, as weird as that sounds! =P I like your take on the secretary antlers as well. Yay for work sketches! cB

It's not terribly important

It's not terribly important to do so, but you might try using a softer pencil and eraser if you haven't already. I don't often use an eraser while sketching since I draw very lightly until I'm satisfied with where the important marks go. It might be because I always draw with 2B instead of an HB (the default lead in most pencil brands). I always use a block white eraser or slide click eraser (those plastic holders with long, tube-like erasers) for detail since they're much softer than pink erasers and don't leave marks behind. That way if I did put effort into cleaning up my sketches, it wouldn't wear out the paper.

I don't strive to be the best, but instead I strive to do my best, and always give it my all every time.

Seriously. I am in awe over this, it deserves lots and lots and lots more praise even for a sketch :3

Uruushou: Thanks! Drawing at work. Doesn’t happen too often. >.>

Saosin: Thank you! I love how deer look when laying down, always so hard to draw that though!

eyestrain: If I draw on paper these day, which isn’t often, I use a hard lead pencil, a 2H I think? And a “Design” Kneaded Rubber Eraser. Still I find even with that, the eraser damages the paper and it will behave wrongly when I try to go over it with inking, markers or watercolors. I rarely use traditional media anymore because the process is so laborious but what I do now when I’m doing something “serious” is sketch in photoshop, refine it, print it out, then transfer with carbon paper to my “real” paper. What a pain in the arse. Rarely have the time or patience for that these days, lol!

quadraptor: Thanks again, you are so sweet. ^^

DEERTH: *fans you* ^^

It sounds like a pain to do

It sounds like a pain to do it that way. I wouldn't draw much on paper either if it was always like that.

If it's not a fairly new kneaded eraser, there could be too much graphite worked into its mass. For tiny details drawn lightly, I like kneaded erasers since you can make little tendrils that can pick up fine details in corners. But I find them to be destructive or ineffective for other marks. Both Fiber Castell and Staedtler make very good white block erasers that I've never had a single complaint about. They can also be cut with a knife if you need a smaller, more precise eraser.

I don't strive to be the best, but instead I strive to do my best, and always give it my all every time.

Lovely... I´m envious of how clean your sketches are. ^^; I like the pose and perspective you used, and his expression. And secretary-antlers are quite underrated, so it´s nice to see you used them in this. <3
