Save the Forest!

Mudam is ending its support for The Endless Forest, after having hosted the game server for 7 years.

The Musée d'Art moderne Grand-Duc Jean in Luxembourg commissioned us to make a work of art for their online gallery in 2003. In response, we created the original prototype for The Endless Forest. In 2005 we were ready to launch the first iteration of the game and Mudam agreed to pay for the server required for allowing all players to interact with each other. Thanks to their support, The Endless Forest has been available for free until today.

Now, however, the museum has changed its policies and is no longer willing to sustain the cost.

Even though we haven't been updating The Endless Forest as much as we may have wanted to, and even though we can't promise any changes in the foreseeable future, we do want to continue to maintain the game in its current state and offer it to the public as a place of peace and harmony, free of charge. To do that, we will need to find a way to pay for the server.

The monthly cost of hosting the server is 165 Euros. This is not a lot of money. And we already have a voluntary subscription system in place. All we need is a few more people who are willing to commit to sending us a few Euros every month. And then we can continue as before.

This is not just a question of finances. It is also a matter of principle. We believe that an artist and their audience can have a symbiotic relationship that does not require any interference from the outside. So in a way, we are taking this opportunity to prove a point. Please help us do so.

That's terrible! It makes me very sad to see this happening to such a wonderful game.. I hope our combined finances can help keep this game afloat.

Im skint right now but have an idea to help:

In the UK we have a TV program called "the one show" it's watched buy most of the UK and apeals to everyone from kids to adults. perhaps if you contacted them and did a interview about the game and it's plight, show them that theres another leval to art in games and how amazing it can be.
Show them that shotup games and volince is nothing to the imagination and creativity of your work. You guys are awsome we know it , perhaps the world needs reminding.
It could get you a new sponser and more donations.

It's just a thought , What do the rest of you guys recon?

As lovely as the idea is, there is usually a lot more complications behind the surface of what you see. Costs of interviews and flights and anything else of the like probably would exceed that of the server and thus, couldnt really be justified. We are on the internet, and it has the largest audience of all. Best of all, its pretty much free!

I could be completely wrong in this guys, but I re-read what Michael said a few times and it seems that they just want to have a little help in paying for the server each month from a few individuals who are willing, so they can keep the forest free and running for everyone, and possibly have new updates in the future.

Try not to panic. We all love this place.

I've never run an online game

I've never run an online game server before, so I don't know for sure. But I'm under the impression that if the server can't be covered through subscriptions, it will cease to be. It's a lot to ask for Auriea and Michael to take on costs to keep the game going when it has been funded entirely by Mudam up until now.

Again, just speculation based on my take on the facts. I really hope we can pull together and keep the forest alive.

I'll contribute with a 3 euro subscription. It's not much, but then again the student pay isn't either. Even though I haven't had time to play much in the past year, I love the forest dearly and would be saddened if it disappeared.

Like someone said previously, it would be nice to know how much is still needed. Or better yet, have some kind of self-updating counter which would correspond in real time to the amount of money already raised. That way people could follow the situation more easily.

Come on people this isn't a lot of money! We wouldn't need more then what, ten people? To make this 100 a 163? Where is everyone else! I see over 70 people in the game in the evenings, and that is just in one timezone. I'll higher my subscription if it's absolutely needed, but I'm just a poor art student as well.
