December 20, 2011 - 10:38am — Emmett
Just a little something I wrote while bored a few days ago. I'm no writer, sorry for any grammar/punctuation mistakes or just writing badly. Will continue if anybody is interested. Green text is fawn Emmett(adult is a different colour), light text is Emmett's mental image of his mother, Red text is a new fawn character.
ohyeah I suck at titles sorry

“Mama! Mama look! Look at me!”
A tiny voice cried from the top of the stone structure, backing up a bit before leaping off with a wiggle of his little tail.
“My goodness, Emmett, You nearly flew.”
The little fawn raced back to the tall, slender doe. “Did I? Did I really?” the fawn spoke in breathless excitement.
“Yes; I’m afraid you’ll have to fly another day, my boy. We must go.”
Emmett protested with a loud groan as the doe licked the top of the boys head.
“You don’t want to be left in the dark, do you?”
The fawn shook his head.
“Then go.”
“But mama I-”
“Go.”
Emmett’s ears lowered themselves, dropping his head as he slowly turned away from his mother. He
looked back, glossy, black eyes stared down at him before giving him a nudge on the rear.
“Mama...”
The doe nodded. The fawn slowly turned back to face the thick forest in front of him and began making his way as the doe stood motionless. Dark clouds loomed over the trees, freezing air nipping at the tips of Emmett’s ears as he walked through the quiet forest, his breath echoing for miles. The cold didn’t seem to just chill the air, it felt like time itself was frozen. A single illuminated path guiding him into the darkness he has feared all his life; the light felt safe, warm even, he slowly pressed forward in blind faith, hoping his mother was waiting for him at the end.
The light took him down a path with tall birch trees lining the edges of the glowing road, and soon he passed a lake that was still as glass. Finding his way to the Old Oak Tree, he lifted his head to look upon the still branches. The friendly Oak he knew seemed taller and menacing, the soft bark looked rough and jagged, branches twisted into each other and in every direction. With quivering limbs, the fawn began walking to the opening of the tree, hoping to find warmth of any kind. Stopping right at the entrance, he peered into the dark mouth of the old oak, sudden fear washing over him. The darkness inside was thick and endless, feeling that if he stepped inside he would fall forever. No words were heard, no reassuring touch of another, as he stared deep into the eternal black he felt someone, or something call out to him.
“It’s alright.”
He reluctantly took a step, darkness engulfing his hoof, whatever calm he had was drained from him as the dark began to pull him in. Panic set in quickly as the light beneath his feet began to fade, how could it do this to him? His heart pounded against his chest in fear. He cried as he struggled to free himself from the tree, thrashing and bouncing as much as his little legs could. Quickly growing tired, the fawn dug his hind legs into the cold ground as the darkness reached out for his second front limb.
Try as he might the tiny fawn could not free himself from the tight grip of the shadows. Under complete horror and desperation he began to cry for help, his tiny breathless voice drowned out from the sudden rush of noise coming from the sky. The wind blew with strong force as the rain suddenly poured down like a giant waterfall, laughter and wailings of unknown creatures could be heard while the dark pulled the little fawn into its mouth.
“Stop it! Please! Just stop it! Let me go! Mama!”
With the very last of his might, he pulled his legs from the tree, sending him tumbling backwards. The frightened fawn quickly scrambled to his shaking feet and ran as fast as he could in the opposite direction. Wide eyes wandered the dark forest frantically looking for a safe place to hide as the
shadows chased after him.
“Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!”
The monsters screamed, poking and shoving him as he ran. Big watery tears welled up in his eyes as he begged for everything to stop. Maybe it was going to be like this forever, he’ll have to run and hide the rest of his life. Already wide eyes grew wider as the ground beneath him began to shake, falling from beneath his feet into nothing. This was it, he was dead, he knew it. The ground crumbled, sending him down into the dark. Emmett shut his eyes, he didn't know if he was falling up, down, left, or right. He just kept them shut until he heard nothing but his own breathing and heart pumping in his ears.
What was that? Whispering?
“...Are ya awake yet?”
“wh...what?”
