In a different place, a different time, there existed a forest. It was inhabited by many creatures, mainly deer. These were no ordinary deer by any means however. There were dragons, demons, even humans masquerading as deer. Many remembered their past lives, many did not, some had no past lives.
One particular deer, a small buck that strikingly resembled a blue jay, was new to this wondrous forest. His name was Norin. He was young, but not so young that he had no antlers. He did not know who or what he had been in a past life, but he knew he had one.
This particular day, he was lounging in one of his favorite spots, by the pond. He like it here. It was quiet and he was tired for practicing his magic all day. He thought of taking a nap, but wasn't sure if he needed more sleep. He slept most days, as there wasn't much else to do. When he wasn't sleeping, practicing magic, or playing with Evelys, he watched deer.
Today, he had noticed a green buck, bearing resemblance to his good friend Eve. He had been watching this deer on and off throughout the day, wondering if he knew Evelys. She didn't talk about her friends much, and they usually played alone.
He decided to go back to working on his magic for the time being. But he would keep an eye on that buck.

This day was far nicer than the others that the winter had put them through. The sun was shining, and despite the apparent chill, there was no snow or rain, and the air was chokingly fresh. Bera was chilling underneath a Willow that overlooked the pond, and he was lazily watching the fish move lethargically. Poor things were nearly frozen for a long while, and with the small heatwave, they thawed and their brains were only moving about a foot an hour.
Having the feeling of being watched, the lizard tailed-buck cast a sideways glance through the puffy white hair on his head, and caught gaze of a blue deer eyeing him. This guy was pretty familiar, but he couldn't exactly put a finger on it. After a while of watching the young lad try hard on some magic, he returns his gaze to the pond below. Focusing on a particularly slow looking koi, he watches it intently as it slowly swims in a circle. After a while he notices a black form move rapidly toward the fish. Not knowing what it is, he calls out loudly to his fishy comrade as the black form engulfs the koi in what appeared to be a toothy mouth. In his moment of desperation, the black creature seems to notice his presence and they lock eyes.
Shaken, he rises quickly and backs away from the edge of the pond, unsure of what to do. After a moment of catching his breath, he looks around and realizes he has drawn some attention from those around. To nobody in particular, he questions: "D-did anybody else see that?"
Norin knew that the buck had called out, but he had only seen the buck yelp and jump at what looked like nothing at the edge of the pond. He elected to stay quiet as he did not know this buck and was extremely quiet and cautious of new deer.
Quite a while went by while Norin thought. Perhaps only a second, but to Norin's young, quick mind, it seemed like much longer. Suddenly, on an impulse he decided to pipe up.
"See what?" He asked the green buck. He asked his question much louder than he normally would have talked. Because of this, he was sure that many deer overheard and that he was drawing unwanted attention to himself. He prayed that no one would engage him in conversation now. He hated talking to deer. Most deer at least. Some were different.
Blushing and still hoping nobody heard, he quickly put his head down and pretended to nap.
