It was a cold and windy Saturday night in the city of New York. People shouted for taxies, rushing home to escape the blistery weather outside. Others gripped their coats, holding them tighter to their bodies, pushing all the other bodies out of their way. By one a.m., everyone had gone, leaving the sidewalks baren, newspapers and trash blowing around in the wind.
At least,
almost everyone had gone….
There were two girls left, walking down the sidewalk next to Central Park; a dirty blonde, and a brunette, walking back from a friend’s house after finishing their homework. The brunette turned her head toward her friend, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
“Hey Holly?”
“Hmm?” Holly hummed, not taking her eyes off the sidewalk.
“You know that guy, Eric?”
“…Yes, what about him?”
“Well, I saw him looking at you again during class Friday,” she said, her face never changing, but there was just a hint of amusement and excitement hidden in her features.
“…Am I supposed to be excited about this, or creeped out?” Holly looked at her friend quizzically, an eyebrow cocked.
The brunette became exasperated. “Excited of course! Some rumors are spreading around that he wants to ask you to prom,” she said quickly, putting a slight skip in her step.
Holly sighed. “I don’t need a boyfriend right now, Jessica. I have to concentrate on school.” But despite her words, she couldn’t help but feel a little bit of excitement sturr in her gut.
“Oh fine…party-pooper,” Jessica murmured to herself.
They kept walking down the slush filled sidewalk, their bare hands in their coat pockets. Their long hair billowed out behind them as a strong gust of wind slapped them in the face, making them squeeze their eyes shut. Holly turned her head away from the onslaught of cold air, and her eyes gazed into Central Park. She started walking quickly toward the park entrance, wanting to get out of the furious wind’s grasp. Jessica’s eyes grew as wide as they could as she stared after Holly, her blood turning cold…and not from the weather.
“Holly, wait! You know it’s dangerous in there at night! Think of all the whack-jobs that hang out in there!”
Holly turned back toward Jessica. “Oh come on, it’s fine! Besides, we can use it as a short cut and get to our homes sooner.” With that, she walked through the gate, leaving Jessica with no choice but to follow, muttering furiously to herself.
It was quieter and a little warmer in the park, the trees not granting the wind passage. Holly seemed at ease, if not a little tense at the same time. However, Jessica was looking around wildly, clutching her coat closer to her, despite there not being any wind. They kept walking for several minutes, disgust crossing their faces as they saw burly men and women sitting on benches, smoking every kind of drug possible. The two girls walking down the sidewalk looked like the only sane people here. Every person they passed stared them down, a wild glint in their eyes.
“Holly, let’s go back,” Jessica whispered, her voice trembling as she continued to look wildly around her.
Holly wasn’t listening. Instead, her eyes were fixated on a group of young men coming down the sidewalk toward them. The two friends didn’t stop, but merely avoided eye contact as they grew closer. Although, Holly dared look from underneath her eyelashes, and saw many smirks meet her gaze. Her blood ran cold and her heart quickened, breath coming out in quick, short billows into the cold air. The men could sense the tension from the two girls, and their malicious smiles grew even wider.
Suddenly, the leader of the pack stopped just in front of Holly and Jessica, while the others kept walking, forming a circle around them. Jessica stepped closer to Holly, terror prominent on her face. Holly just stared into the eyes of the one in front of her, her lime green eyes piercing.
“Hello, girls…so nice of you to join us on this pleasant night. The boys and I were getting lonely.” The gang members chuckled as they stared hungrily at their trapped prey.
“Step aside,” Holly said in a demanding voice. She surprised herself, and didn’t know where this new found courage came from, but she didn’t care. Her main focus was Jessica, and how she needed to get her out of her to safety. The leader blinked at her tone, but refused to let his smile falter.
“Or what? What could
you do…a supple, beautiful young lady….Mmm, I’d hate to kill you if you try and escape…the last thing we want is for the cops to come after us, yes?” He stepped closer, his eyes wild. The group also took a step closer, grinning from ear to ear at their easy catch. However, Holly’s expression never wavered. She was going to make them move, one way or another.
“I said…step…aside,” she growled, baring her teeth. The leader’s eyes grew wide at what he saw, and took a step back. She didn’t have regular human teeth like he expected…but canine teeth.
“’The hell?” he exclaimed, not taking his eyes off her. Holly’s piercing green eyes stared him down, her hands clenching into fists. She could feel heat buildup inside her, like an inferno waiting to be let lose. She couldn’t let them take her and Jessica. She couldn’t let them end up like all those other girls on the news, who were captured by sadistic men to fulfill their desires. No, she would
not allow that.
“Come on babe, lighten up.” A gruff looking man had grabbed Jessica by the arm, his voice far from soothing. Jessica let out a scream of horror, flailing her free arm to try and beat him off.
That was it. The fuse had been blown.
Holly let out a fearsome screech of anger and hate, and turned toward Jessica’s attacker. She crouched down, preparing to strike. All eyes were now on her, as her skin took on a brilliant green color, and soon gave way to scales. Her fingers grew in length, and became claws, while her face stretched out to form a muzzle. Her hair shrunk back, turning black and green.
Foolishly, another man tried to grab Jessica while she was distracted. Holly leaped toward him, her clothes ripping off as wings and a tail shot out, and her feet became paws. The transformation was finished as she slammed into the attacker, balling a clawed hand into a fist and punched him square in the nose, emanating a loud cracking nose. The man hollered in pain, writhing on the ground as he held his broken nose with his hands. The green dragon rose onto her legs, and turned to face the other men. Some were running away, but some had stayed, their feet glued to the pavement.
“So,” she said, cracking her knuckles. “Who’s next?”
The leader started fumbling around in his jacket, not taking his eyes off the beast. Suddenly, he pulled out a hand gun, and aimed it at the dragon.
“S-STAY BACK! I’M WARNING YOU, Y-YOU F-F-FREAK!” He had both hands clasped to the pistol, but he couldn’t stop shaking. Holly noticed this, and wasn’t the least bit intimidated. If he couldn’t aim properly, then chances are she wouldn’t get hit. Kicking off with her back legs, and flapping her wings, she lunged toward him, clawed hands outstretched.
Suddenly, the leader took aim, and fired. Holly swerved away from the gun, and circled the man as he repeatedly fired his hand gun, his face still lit with terror. His terror only grew when his gun ran out of ammo; Holly’s plan was successful.
She landed on the ground, facing her terrified enemy, but he wouldn’t budge. The dragoness smiled smugly. Well, if that didn’t make him move….
“My turn.”
She opened her muzzle wide, and suddenly orange flames shot out from within. They lapped at the surrounding air, and reached for the men in front of them. The remaining men shouted and cursed, and managed to tear their feet away from the pavement as they fled, not looking back behind them. The dragoness closed her mouth, her eyes staring after the retreating pack. She then remembered Jessica, and turned her head toward her friend. She was staring wide eyed at the dragoness before her, mouth gaping.
“Jessica, are you alright?” She wanted to take a step closer and make sure for herself, but she still wasn’t sure if her friend was now terrified of her or not.
“Y-yes…but…oh wow, a
dragon?! I knew something was different about you, but a
dragon?! This…this is awesome! Oh man, what would everyone else say?! We should tell them!”
“No! No no, Jessica, don’t you understand? This needs to be kept a secret. You heard that guy, he called me a
freak. How many others would do the same? No, it needs to be kept a secret.” The dragoness looked down at the remains of her clothes, and sighed. No changing back into a human tonight, at least until she got home. Jessica followed her gaze, and looked apologetic.
“Heh, sorry about your clothes…but I’ll keep it a secret, I promise….Wait, how are we getting back? Obviously you can’t just walk down the street like that,” she said, motioning toward Holly. Holly smiled, and lowered herself down until she was standing on all fours.
“Hop on!”
Jessica looked wide eyed at the dragoness, but with everything that had happened tonight, she’d take anything that was available just to get home. She slowly walked over to her friend, and clambered onto her back, grasping some of the black and green hair on her neck. As a dragon, Holly was only taller than the average person when standing on her back legs, so there wasn’t much room for Jessica. But the green dragon seemed to be able to hold her weight, so she leaped into the air and beat her wings furiously, climbing higher and higher into the night sky, toward home.
