i'm brand spankin' new, so i'm still concepting my first deer, Temperance ;w;
honestly i'm a bit out of practice drawing human faces and i almost never draw deer, so this was pretty educational for me. for his design i wanted very warm colors and for his face to have that new hipster aesthetic of, like, gay lumberjacks with man-buns and a starbucks coffee. while i really like his neck fluff and back(the speckles are so cute!) i'm very unsure about keeping his fawn coat color on his legs once he's a stag. i also haven't included a mask here, simply because every time i put one on him it didn't look right...?
if anyone has any constructive criticism or ideas/tips for Rannie's design, feel free to let me know. thank you for looking at my art !
I love them oh gosh <3
My goodness the expressions
Welcome to TEF! He looks
made by foxofthestars!
oh um hey is he single asking
His design is adorable! Quite handsome, too. I for one am always a fan of the aesthetic you described, especially with all those spots and dots and freckles (one of my character design weaknesses lmao). When I joined the community years ago I feel like the chubby neck-fluff was a popular design choice so it's really interesting to see that again! I'm quite fond of it.
Also yay for somebody else who makes human-faced deer's ears at the same level as a human's \o/;;
What deer species did you reference for his antlers? I might be able to offer advice on drawing them because even old farts like me who have been playing TEF for years and subsequently drawing deer for years really dislike drawing antlers because they're structurally complicated, plus a lot of photos online are of hunted deer so sometimes it's the hardest thing in the world to find antlers for the right perspective.
aaah what a fluffy boy! you
Welcome to the forest!
that's an adorable face omg, and that flufff~
eh, for me personally, I just forget the mask. It's been 9 years and I still can't figure out how to incorporate it into my deer's design so I just ignore the fact that he wears one when he's in the forest |D
So if it's giving you a hard time figuring out what to do with it you can always just not put it on, it's your deer at the end of the day so you can do whatever you want with him haha. But if you want him to have one but not wear it I see some people that have them wear the mask in their antlers or around their neck, or just keep it in their deer's "inventory" ( I mean this is a magic forest deer can probably have pockets lol), others just sort of treat the mask like face paint or markings across the mid level part of the face. So there's tons of ideas you can use to incorporate the masks if you want him to have one ^^ or cop out like me |D
If you're unsure about keeping that fawn color on his adult form, a nice reddish-dark brown would also look good with that color combo. If it helps, draw a quick little full body of him with the markings you want to keep and copy & paste it a few times and switch out the color you're unsure of, kind of like this, so you can see all the options in front of you. That way it's easier to see what works well and what doesn't.
But yeah, super nice design, it's fluffy and spotty and there's flowers, I'm on board. Goodd work! <3
Only critique is with his human anatomy, on the portrait of his adult face there his face looks a tad "flat", like his eyes are sunk too far in, shift the eyes a little to the right (his left) and you're good.
That sounds a little nitpicky lol, but I had a professor tell me once that if your drawing is getting little critiques for tiny changes it means you did a reeeeeeally good job with it C:
Oooh love this idea, very

[honestly not sure if this
@FishBiscuit - oh heyyy you can tell your -ahem- friend that he is indeed a single pringle. until a month from now he's a lil fawn but one he's big and strong the shy boy will be open to dating~
thank you so much, you're too kind! i'm so glad you like his design
i actually referenced the in-game model for his antlers, but otherwise i'd compare his build(under all the poof) to an elk. i do need a lot of help with them, i almost never draw antlers, or deer for that matter, so any advice is appreciated... (TwT) thank you again!
@phantomhelsing - thank you very much for the advice, i'll try to take it all to mind!! :'D i figured out his colors meshed best as they already are, but your advice was very helpful in determining what colors suited him!
honestly everyone has been so
I will have to throw someone

I always struggled with masks, but sometimes I just made it like half mask just so the face would still have that mystery haha. Nowadays I keep the design maskless for the most part though
Such a charming character! I
