I'm not sure if anyone really knows the answer, but I think they are just to encourage people to use the community site's features (diaries, pictures etc).
Please watch the caps, and the excessive use of !'s and ?'s. It's really not needed.
Nobody knows yet, but it's been speculated that they might be used as a form of currency on the site at a later time ^_^
