The trees crackled. They fell like dominoes, collapsing. Crouched, I just stood there and cowered as they all seemed to crumble and pile in mountains around me.
Roe... Roe...
I took a running leap, hooves clipping and using springy trunks to leap over the mounds.
This must be the Cataclysm, that was what I feared. The things I put away but knew would happen to our precious forest.
Clouds of dust were everywhere. They clawed at the sky, the clear blue expanse above the devastated forest, golden like flame as they floated away on the wind in clouds of heavy smoke. This heavy smoke clouded my vision, I could not find my mate.
Thud thud thud thud thudding beneath me my hooves fell hard and quick in rhythm. I raced the beat of my heart, which ever-sped higher and higher. Piles, like mountains, loomed and cast shadows as I passed through the thin crevasses that formed between the timbers. The stumps seemed to have been rent from the ground, roots creating expanses of dirt-clod rope, seeming to wish capture upon those who ventured close. I steered away, my face raised to the wind, scenting through the earth-and-dust air for my mate. Frantically I drove forward, trying in vain to smell her.
I heard her first. Crying out for me. The sound ripped my soul.
Interesting... By the way,
"Iphea?" Roe asked
"Iphea?" She called again with a little more urgency in her voice. Roe looked around warily. Her senses were on full alert. "Iphea!"
She stood suddenly, tail up in alarm. The doe didn't know what she was feeling or why, but a sense of urgency had overcome her. "IPHEA!" This time, a startled yell.

I cried out to her, voice trying hard to boom through empty air. Without anything but mountains of fallen trees to bounce off of, it seemed to fade away. My call faded even more as I ascended to the top of one of the mounds, barely balancing on the springy and ever-moving logs. I briefly peered over the top, only to find my doe was still far away. I could see her, the fallen trees creating a Colosseum to keep her from leaving.
I scrambled down the mound before the earth rolled again, sending some of the higher logs rolling, some of the mounds crumbling down. Keep moving, keep moving toward Roe. My chest heaved, legs thrown out in as long of strides as I could manage. The ground seemed to be against me, rolling so violently I could not gain my footing.
I let out another call for Roe not to move unless she had to, and took that running leap. I scraped the ground, hind-hooves barely catching the edge of a crevasse that I knew wasn't there before. No turning back now! Climbing the quivering trunks, I practically skidded down to her, giving my mate a brief and relieved nuzzle before urging her to follow.

The doe heard the voice of
What was going on?
The doe looked up to see Iphea skidding towards her, thankfull for his presence and nuzzle, but his urgency frightened her. "Iphea, what's happening?" Her grey eyes were large with terror, but the doe didn't know why. She nuzzled him back, her small frame shaking with fright. She felt helpless and confused.
Then, just as he was about to
