It was a calm, warm day in the forest. The sun had been hovering in the sky for some time now, and the grass was completely warmed from its strong rays. During this point of the day, the deer were either basking or lurking in the shade to avoid the heat. Underneath trees lay several deer, many dozing off in the serene atmosphere. The young Dieu himself rested underneath an oak tree as a gentle breeze slightly ruffled his fur. Every so often he would flick his head to the side, casting aside the long strands of fur that dangled over his mask.
"Mmmm." he sighed, resting his head on his back. It was so relaxing just to be able to lay in perfect tranquility. Bellows of other deer jerked him back to reality every time he began to drift off, which was getting irritating as it became harder to stay awake. After more futile attempts to sleep, Dieu gave up and settled for cracked eyelids instead. This kept his eyes safe from the bright orb in the sky, but he could also stay fully conscious of the world around him.
Sunlight filtered in through the tense canopy, illuminating the forest floor. As Dieu's eyes scanned, he noticed with curiosity that the light had settled on a small, yet intriguing, tree. Not a pine, nor an oak, he wondered what it might be. He could go and investigate. Or he could simply lay here.
The deer stayed put, eyes snapping to the tree, then elsewhere. A soft groan grumbled in his throat, and he pawed anxiously at the loose dirt. Eventually it became too much, and he shoved all four hooves into the ground, rising. Dieu rolled his shoulders as he turned to face the plant. Ears erect, he stalked forward, nearing the tree. Once he'd reached it, he craned his neck around the trunk. His head was slightly tilted as he continued the inspection. However, it was impossible to determine what it was.
Scent? No, completely unfamiliar. Texture? Too smooth to be a pine, and the coloration was different than that of an oak.
The buck leaned against the tree as he fought confusion, and heard a soft thump.
His ears flicked backwards towards the noise, his eyes following suit. What had fallen appeared to be a type of fruit, though none this male had ever seen before. It was an abnormal shape, in fact, it didn't resemble the figure of anything else. At the bottom it was round and wide, at the middle it caved into itself, yet at the top it resumed a circular appearance but at a considerably smaller scale.
'What..is this?' Dieu thought to himself as the tip of his hoof grazed the foreign object.
Unfortunately, this caused the fruit to tumble downhill. Fast.
Horrified, the poor confused soul stood at the top of the hill as he watched it roll away. Then, realizing that someone else might steal his new-found treasure, leapt after it.
He sprinted after it, catching up with it mighty quickly. But it kept rolling, and certainly one just couldn't lean down when it would be so easily crushed. So, Dieu devised a strategy. If he got down to its level, there was no way he could possibly inflict any damage what so ever. His front legs sunk to the ground, letting his knees sink into the grass. His back legs were kept up, used as a propelling force for his front legs. This created a sort of slide, in which the front legs slid along the ground while the back were used to maintain a fast pace. Mouth open wide to snatch the fruit, Dieu continued to pursue it across the forest. Closer..closer..almost there...and finally! The bucks teeth sunk into the skin, and he gave a joyful squeal of delight. He rose to his feet, and shook the fruit around in victory. Suddenly...he felt eyes on his back. Blinking, he turned around to face a series of staring faces. His eyes settled on his captured quarry, snapped back to the other deer, and then he chuckled. Leaning against a tree, he stated:
"Hmph, and THAT is how it's done."
Haha! Nice! I love it!!
Thanks Alli.
