"And then I....", the small boy trailed off, looking up warily at his father.

"You...what?" his father inquired, mocking his tone playfully.

"...stole it." The phrase came out short and blocky. Jerome's face began to pinch up in a cry, but not

before his bony legs took him off down the street.

"No no no! Not again!" Mr. Sully shouted angrily. The tall, angular man sprinted after his son, digging in

his coat pocket for the flashlight.

The alleyway on the opposite side of the busy street was always where Jerome seemed to go, and it

was always too dark, even in the sunniest of weather.

The boy knew just what to do, hiding himself behind a few soggy boxes and a tin trash can, completely

concealed from the light and from others' eyes.

He could hear his father's heavy footsteps getting closer, crunching louder on the gravel.

But almost instantaneously, the ground beneath Jerome's feet caved in, taking him with it.

A shrill scream was cut short as his mouth was filled with dirt, dirt that somehow closed off the

opening of the hole he fell through.

There was a maze of tunnels and caves right under the ground that took him on a nightmarish ride of

twists and turns.

His tunnel eventually led to a small opening with sunlight pouring in.

This time he fell onto the soft grass, squinting and groaning at the bright light surrounding him.

A figure appeared to be standing over him. "Welcome to the Endless Forest", it said.

How do you describe both the beginning and the end? We should have known better, but we didn't. What does it matter what we think we know? In the end, there's no denying the truth. - Left Behind --[Art by Aquilo]
