La didn't think she'd met Alice before, but she had a general idea who she was looking for. Her brows had come together very seriously, but holding the burlap sack in her teeth it was impossible for La to really convey the gravity of the situation that was weighing on her.
The wind blew at her ears and La surveyed the Birch forest from on top of a tall rock. She supposed that she had become too used to letting others find her rather than seeking them out. The doe gave an overly heavy sigh through her teeth that briefly inflated her cheeks, and she hopped down into the tall grass to keep up the search.
A soft rustle in the trees was heard as another gentle gust blew through Ali's hair. She lay perched atop a small hill, the birch being one of her favorite places to spend the day. On this particular hill, the grass was the perfect length- not too long as so not to hide herself under grass completely but not too short to be cold.
Many noises were heard throughout the birch by the doe, but one rustling seemed particular and strangely close to her. She moved her head a little to see if there was something (or someone) there, in the grass.
La was anything but quiet cresting the hill. The dryer grasses cracked and bent under her hooves and she huffed and puffed through the burlap in her mouth as the sack swayed and regularly bumped back into her neck.
She nearly stumbled into Alice and only stopped herself and dug her hooves into the dirt at the last moment, wobbling. She dropped the sack to apologize, "Sorry," she said, "I didn't see you."
The skull did its best to roll away down the hill, but La caught it with a hoof, hooking it through an eyehole so escape was impossible. She looked at the doe. Skull mask. Snapped off antlers with feathers. "Are you Alice?"
As the doe searched for the source of all that rustling, she found it to be what looked like a small doe trotting slightly awkwardly through the thick, birch grass. Her markings and antlers were very peculiar- they seemed to be... hands? Though Alice didn't have a long time to mull over this since the doe came right for her.
"Not a problem, miss," her tail swished slow as she spoke, and Ali wondered what this new acquaintance could want. She watched as the deer made her best attempts to keep the bag from rolling away. "Oh, yes, that'd be me. Is everything alright?"
La gave a tired and sarcastic chuckle. "Things are weird. For me. I came to ask you some questions about your skull. The mask I mean, not the actual skull."
She stopped and took a moment to gather her thoughts and hopefully ask in a way that wasn't offensive. She nudged the skull under her foot to a different position to try to keep it from rolling down the hill. "I heard you acquired it in an odd way, and I wanted to hear the details of that story, if you would be willing to share."
Alice chuckled, "I should hope you're asking about my mask and not the real one, hah. Don't know much about the latter."
The acquaintance's next question was quite a surprise to hear. No one had asked this question in a long, long time. She wasn't actually sure she had even been asked it ever. Her ears flicked nervously.
"I would be, but I can't say it will be spot on... my memory has gone downhill over the years, yet I'll do my best for a kind stranger like you." A pause, while the doe collected her thoughts and relived memories quickly.
"I know for sure I wasn't born in this forest. I came here when I was a young fawn, with only small snippets of memory in my mind from wherever I'd come from. They weren't pleasant. I still have some undesirable nightmares from time to time. But one thing that baffled me was this skull I'd come to wear. I don't remember getting it from anywhere, I just... had it. Kept it. No questions asked. I felt insecure and scared without it, though I tried to take it off many times I never could for more than a few minutes. This unexplainable bond I have with this skull, that I don't even like that much or know where it originated from, is the most important thing I own. Strange, no? Even now, after four years, I remain attached to it. A-actually the only time I ever really took it off was when I was with my children..." her eyes grew distant, and she appeared stiffer. A bird called out somewhere. She shook herself from the reverie.
"Sorry, didn't mean to go all back-flash on you..." Alice said quietly and smiled quite widely so as it was heard in her voice.
The doe smiled when Alice joked back at her about the double skulls, but her smile shifted gradually to a look of attentiveness.
La's ears flattened backwards against her head as she listened patiently. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she concentrated and considered a number of possibilities. She had no answer to her own mystery, but perhaps she had one for Alice.
"About a month ago," she began, opening the burlap sack to show the damaged skull she had been carrying. "This was on my head when I woke up from sleeping. I couldn't get rid of it like any other magic, in the end I had to whack my whole head against a tree. I'm trying to figure out what it is and where it came from. I know you got your skull much longer ago than that but who knows, maybe it was the same person who gave them to us both."
Though her voice was level and neutral, La doubted the hypothesis she had posited. Alice seemed to find solace in wearing her mask through her daily life, while La felt a mix of fear and contempt for the beastly thing that had stuck itself to her.
The skull that was lifted out of that bag by this doe made Alice feel uncomfortable, in the least. Her eyes narrowed and she did her best to examine it. Did it look like a cervid's one or did it belong to another species entirely? Either way the unsettling mask wasn't exact to her own.
"The... same person you say?" Breath got a little hitched in her throat. That was impossible, wasn't it... that someone could have given it to her and this other deer. "How could that be?" Curious to know more, her head grew a little closer and ears perked forward. The possibility of ever getting closure on where this mask came from had seemed very unlikely for a long time, yet now things seemed to be almost clearer, even if she had very little info on what may had happened.
"Oh er- I didn't get your name, did I? Sorry..." a giggle- Ali had been forgetful as always.
La nodded with enough force that it made her ears flop up and down. "Someone put this skull on my head. I can't imagine that it could have just appeared there on its own... well I don't want to imagine that. It doesn't make very much sense and it would make so much more sense if it was some person, even if they weren't a deer, putting skulls on heads while we slept. Maybe, possibly, that's what happened to you as well. I don't want to say with any degree of certainty, but I also don't want to rule it out."
When Alice questioned La's name, La took a moment to try to backtrack through their conversation, rewinding through words and actions. She couldn't recall if she had introduced herself properly or if she had, as was often the case, jumped into a conversation. "I'm sorry, I think I forgot to say anything. My name is La." The glowing pictograph that hovered above her head expanded slightly and glowed to enunciate itself.
Alice listened closely to La but she was slightly skeptical about the whole thing, no matter how much she wanted to believe there was an expalation to her mask. "I see. In that case, when I was brought to the forest, you think someone put it on me?" The information mulled around in her head for a while. It was possible. "There is something else you need to know. When I speak through this mask, it distorts my... voice, in the weirdest way. It also allows me to growl, which is unusual for a human-faced deer, don't you think?"
A smile at hearing the doe's name. "La..." the pronounciation rolled off her tougne neatly, "what a nice name. And your mask and markings are so interesting, too."
Heyy. Lately I've been thinking of bringing Vinx back. I hear him calling me lately, but I wanted to know what you thought on it? He'll probably won't have a bio for a long while, but at least he'll be around the forest.
La understood the air of skepticism that hung between the two does and floated like mist. "I can't promise it. But I would not rule it out as a possibility worth considering if you are ever curious about it."
Her nose wrinkled at the thought of the mask's sounds. "I haven't tried yelling with mine on. But to be honest I don't really want to put it back on. Yours is a protector, mine is an antagonist... and anything is possible with magic. I've worn other masks that make all kinds of noises."
At the compliment, she grinned sheepishly. Flattery could be embarrassing. "The shapes are human handprints," she explained. "They don't have hooves on their fingers, it's always really fascinated me."
Rikka; that could be really interesting! Hey, if you want to, sure. But maybe only if you're 100% sure with it.
Alison;
Though the possibility of someone physically giving the mask to her seemed strange, Alice had to note La seemed informed and down to earth; definitely not out of it. "Well, my mask was there ever since I woke up in this place for the first time. Unless I was asleep when I was brought here, and he placed it on me before I woke, do you think he may have cast a spell on me? From wherever I came from, he may have been there, and he may have cursed me into this place with the mask on."
"Masks sure are strange," she chuckled, "I can understand why you don't want to wear it. Does it scare you?" If it did scare her, Alice wouldn't be surprised. She pitied this poor doe. Why did she have to get caught up in all of this?
La's markings really captivated Alice. She looked closer, admiring the fingers, "You're right, it's strange that they're human hands. I remember having those for a while, heh."
"I don't think you were cursed," La said. "Since you find comfort in your mask. You enjoy wearing it. I don't believe that a thing that helps a person can be considered a curse. But it could well have been put on you with some spell or magic. I've considered that too and I've been going around asking other people about it, including a variety of deer who are well-versed in magic, and I've been told that a skull mask doesn't come from normal deer spells, and that it must either come from The Big Zombie Deer or it must come from Glitch Magic, which is something I don't understand well, but I've gathered that it is a kind of magic unique to The Forest but that The Gods didn't quite intend to be. I don't know what the chances of that are."
"The mask does scare me," she admitted. "But in a more subtle way than if I was, say, chased by a wolf. I'll admit that I sometimes find it... somewhat morbid to wear the body parts of the dead, but it is not my place to either judge or to tell other people what to do, or what their masks should mean to them."
She perked up slightly at the mention of the marks over her eyes. "They're only dark because of the spell, but underneath there are still hand shapes on my natural pelt. Always human hands." She smiled proudly.
aah its fine! ;w; i had her jump up instinctively because i tab out a lot, so i was afraid maybe i accidentally missed her trying to interact with zuri or something. it's cool! <3
@littlesinner
Only if you have the muse to draw him. I don't think I could draw him myself since I'm terrible with skulls. ;; You can redesign him to your tastes, if you like?
Oh my god. He's even more amazing than how I pictured him! Seriously, thank you. You're just.. ughh.. -hugs- ;; <3
Seriously? o_o You would make CSS? ;___;
Oh heck yes. I LOVE this. You have no idea. Simple and yet the layout is beautifully set up.~ I thousand thanks to you and I promise to have his bio up running soon. <3
I don't think he was scared, he is in fact what I believe to be never scared no matter what hovewer he can be quite 'protective' of his personal space and he's antisocial so. I don't think he was 100% fond of her just standing there, but if she'll actually sniff him and greet him and stuff like that then he'll examine back and wouldn't have problem being there with her.
If she did then it's my fault since I must not have seen :c
Rikka; No problem! Can't wait to see him back. <33
Sure, it's
Jennie; thank u fwiend
Ahh I'm so sorry, I'm awful at interpreting other character's emotions. Awesome, because though Alice is scared of him, she likes him too.
