11.21.11 ~ Fell asleep in a berry bush, woke up in the Other Forest. Cold and wet, spent most of the evening trying to get his fur to lay right and not smell like winter. Found an improbably large egg in the old ruins; must have been laid by that big creepy crow thing. Fell asleep next to it trying to get out of the cold. ~ Woke up cramped from sleeping on the hard rock, went for a run down to the pond to stretch out. Came across a cluster of deer and a funny little fawn. Chased fawn and one of the stags around for a while, and curled up with the fawn until he and the stag fell asleep. Took shelter in the old oak and fell asleep next to Herla.

Rabbit is your average nice, happy, normal deer. He lives in the nice, happy, normal woods, has no magical powers save the ability to leap tall bushes in a single bound, and spends his days bounding around like the small woodland creatures he took his name from and hunting out patches of mottled light to fall asleep in. The only thing remarkable about him at all is that sometimes when he falls asleep, he wakes up someplace else, someplace not at all like his nice, happy, normal woods.

It's always the same place; a tiny patch of sunlit flowers at the base of a hill, within easy stroll of a quiet pond. But he's never seen the flowers while he was awake, and there's something about the pond that seems...different. Magical. Even Rabbit himself is different: he's cleverer, and he can do things he shouldn't be able to do, things that change his surroundings, and that change the strange, not-quite-deer he meets in the Other Forest.

And those deer, they're different, too. Some of them are almost normal-looking, but no type of deer Rabbit had ever seen in his own woods. Some of them are bizarre colors that couldn't possibly camouflage them from predators. Some of them have scales, or their bones show through their skin, or they change their shape and form seemingly on a whim. Some of them wear skulls on their faces, or other things. And some of them, most of them, don't have deer faces at all. Instead they have pale, round, flat faces with large, staring eyes.

But forests still have rabbits, even magical forests, and a magical stream can be jumped over for fun like any other stream. Even the normal, awake Rabbit was always curious, and over time he found himself impatiently waiting for sunset and sleep, so that he could wake up back in the strange Other Forest, and go back to exploring its hidden mysteries.
