Legend tells of a Kirin, Bojing, who was the guardian of a great prince and prophet. Bojing was gentle but prideful, he believed himself very wise and very powerful. Visiting another land, far away from what they called home, the prince he escorted acted as ambassador to potential allies. Every evening, while the prince slept, Bojing would go to a quiet lake that rested down the hill of their stay to drink. Unknown to the K'i he was being watched.
Murdina, a lonely Kelpie, a selfish creature that would steal young men and women to turn them into fish to keep her company. Ever since that first evening of the Kirin's arrival she had watched him when he came to the waters edge and admired his beauty and strong features. With an aching heart filled with growing desire she decided she must have him.
On the last evening of the prince's ambassador mission the Kirin went to the lake for the last time. However, when he drew near to the water he saw a beautiful creature standing in the shallows. The Kirin had heard of the Unicorns of this land but had never met one before. He was instantly struck by the creature's majesty. The Unicorn enticed Bojing into a game of chase and dance and by the end of it the K'i was so wrapped up in the joy he thought nothing of it when they paused shoulder to shoulder to rest and he leaned in to touch her's with his own.
The Unicorn's smile suddenly spread into an unnaturally toothy grin and before the Kirin knew it he was being dragged into the water's depths, stuck to a creature's shoulder he no longer recognized. Deep below, amongst the muck of the lake, the facade had already fully melted away and the Kelpie unveiled her true form. The Kirin was now the Kelpie's prisoner.
Bojing demanded his release but he found quickly that even he was no match for the Water Witch's magic. But Murdina was willing to make a deal. If the lovely Kirin would grace her with an evening that would sire her a child then she would set the Kirin free. With a length of reluctance Bojing finally gave in to her proposal. As promised The Kelpie released the Kirin to return to his prince though she longed for him to stay.
Time passed and the Kelpie gave birth to a hybrid child both beautiful and hideous. The Kelpie was a possessive creature and the child she bore from the Kirin was a treasure to her and she wished to keep the little one all to herself. She transformed the child into an abnormal mix of catfish and koi to hide them away from the world.
The child grew believing themself but a fish, a fish that was destined to feed at the bottom of the lake and of little worth to other creatures, the Kelpie made sure of it. But the Catfish had an insatiable curiosity, the surface dwellers fascinated them. The child would hide in the reeds close to the surface to watch the surface dwellers as they came to drink or feed or bathe. The child began to grow a wild imagination and dream of exploring the air breather's world.
One day a new creature came to the lake's edge. It's curved horn and pure white coat fascinated the little fish more than any they had seen before. The Unicorn spoke to the child, telling them of a hidden place below the lake where a new world waited to be explored, a place that a swimmer like the child could reach. Excited the child followed the Unicorn's directions to the portal and mustering up a little courage dove into it. The child spilled from the tears of a giant stone and was deposited into a small stream.
Back in the world from which the child came the Kelpie screeched when she realized her hybrid child was missing. The Unicorn that now stood at a safe distance from the water's edge heard her cries and called after her. "You have taken away my child so you could take our form, Water Witch. Now your child is gone too."
