"And all the while I feel like I'm standing in the middle of a crowded room, screaming at the top of my lungs, and no one even looks up"

TreeDancer's picture

She looked up at him. She was

She looked up at him. She was familiar but only in books. "Yes...I know..I've read about it.."her voice was low and without life or hope in her words. "And I'll be there for him till he wakes up or ...or..."her face shook and tears erupted form her eyes again and her head slumped down dropping cold tears to the earth.

Sage looked at her with a

Sage looked at her with a face of panic and sympathy. He see the tears fall from her eyes and he would slowly walk forward, standing beside her although he faced the opposite way. He'd lower his neck, 'holding' her against his shoulder. He wanted to comfort her, but he wasn't sure if he could. He'd do his best, however. "Shh," he muttered softly, "let it all out, Prim." He sighed, closing his eyes as he focused on tending to his friend. He could feel her shaking against him as she cried.

TreeDancer's picture

She felt herself shake even

She felt herself shake even more when he came to hug her and when he said let it out she lost it. Her head leaned against his white fur and she wailed, tears streaming down her cheeks leaving dark stains till no more fell. She was taking in sharp breaths and had to lay down by the time she finished. While she was still terribly sad, letting out all her tears seemed to help a little. "I don't know what to do Sage...I'm so scared...I've never lost anyone before" her voice choked as she spoke.

As the doe lay down he would

As the doe lay down he would do the same, providing a shoulder for her to lean on. His gaze was somber but his voice would cease to show this. "I know. I'd be scared too." He let out a soft breath, resting his head on her shoulders as he held her close. He'd like to think he was helping. "But in this case, I'm afraid all you can do it wait... and see." He closed his eyes; he knew that was he was saying would sting, but when it came to comas that was really all there was to it.

TreeDancer's picture

She hiccuped and buried her

She hiccuped and buried her face in his deep white fluff. "You..you're right I know..I just"she sighed and her body shook, wanting to cry again but she was out of tears. "I just don't know if I can take this waiting...I don't like being useless..."she said wanting to do anything ANYTHING to bring him back to her.

"I doubt you've been

"I doubt you've been useless," he replied quietly. "Until he wakes up, keeping him fed and warm and protected should be enough. You'll have to be patient, but I can't imagine how hard that can be with circumstances like these." The stag would slightly rub the back of Eloa's head with his cheek, hoping to calm her down as she was still shaking.

TreeDancer's picture

"I know..."she repeated and

"I know..."she repeated and sighed, keeping her face hidden. "I know....."

After a few moments of

After a few moments of silence, the stag would open his eyes fully and slowly lifted his head to the side. "I, um-- I made you something." He'd clear his throat, angling his head in a way so that the pouch attached to his antler dangled right before Eloa's cheek. "Can't really untie it myself," he said, gently wiggling the pouch with added affect.

TreeDancer's picture

Eloa slowly moved her tear

Eloa slowly moved her tear stained face from his fluff to look at the pouch. She glanced at him a moment before taking it off his tine and slowly opened it.

The stag watched as she

The stag watched as she opened it, holding his breath, praying she'd like it. It'd taken him quite a bit to make. Inside the pouch she'd find an amulet forged from a strange, faded purple rock. Across the surface of the stone was the shape of a familiar flower which had been painted on, of course.
TreeDancer's picture

Her eyes went wide as she

Her eyes went wide as she looked at it, a small sniffle left her and she glanced up at him. "This is...its beautiful Sage, where did you get it" she asked through soft hiccups before removing the amulet completely to get a better look at it.

He chuckled softly. "Made it

He chuckled softly. "Made it myself. Though, I'll give credit where it's due; my sister helped me out with the painting." He watched her inspect the amulet, and with a grin he'd ask, "Like it?"

TreeDancer's picture

"Its lovely" she breathed

"Its lovely" she breathed softly and picked it up. "could you put it on" she said holding it up to him with her mouth.

The stag nodded, taking the

The stag nodded, taking the amulet's chain in his teeth. As Eloa lowered her head appropriately, he'd slide the chain around her head and eventually got it to the point where it could fall around her neck. It fit, thank the gods. He gave her a smile, glad that she had seemingly calmed down. "You look lovely." His ears flattened for a second. "And not because of the amulet-- I mean, the amulet looks nice on you yes, but you're already-- you already looked nice--" He'd cut himself short, letting out an embarrassed chuckle. "That was supposed to be a compliment. But instead it sounded like I was tooting my own horn." He gave her a smile, wondering if he'd pulled that off in any way, shape or form.

TreeDancer's picture

She gave a soft laugh and

She gave a soft laugh and shook her head "No I understand..thank you you're sweet" she said giving him a grateful nuzzle before just letting her head rest there. "Be sure to thank your sister for me too" she said glancing up at him. Eloa felt rather ungrateful, she really was amazed by the craftsmanship and adored her gift but she was feeling numb and cold. Not physically cold but spiritually.

The amber-eyed stag nodded,

The amber-eyed stag nodded, smiling to himself as she'd rest her head on his shoulder. "I will." He let out a small sigh, both content and somber. He could tell she was still hurt, and she would be for a while. That brief laugh he'd gotten out of her was worth the time he spent making that amulet. They lay there, in silence. The snow fell around them, though a low tree beside them gave them a little more shelter than the surrounding pines. He'd watch the distance, all the while aware of Eloa and the way she was breathing. Unlike a few minutes ago her breathing was much slower and well-paced. This reassured him.

TreeDancer's picture

She blinked slowly, watching

She blinked slowly, watching the snow fall. She was glad someone was there for her during this time. Had he not come when she did she'd have fallen to pieces. At least this action seemed to ground her mind even if a little. As the snow got deeper she stretched her limbs out into it, letting the cold numb her body. Everything almost felt surreal. She tried to think but every time she tried she found her thoughts vanish into an abyss from which she couldn't retrieve them.

Sage would uncertainly break

Sage would uncertainly break the silence with a light-hearted remark. "Not much of a walk, is it?" He would give her a smile to let her know he meant well by the comment. "We could stay here, though, if you want. Or go somewhere else." He was trying to keep her thoughts on anything and everything else besides her son, as he wouldn't want her to resort to the state he'd found her in. Eventually she'd have to deal with her emotions, and he knew that, but for now he would do what he could to keep her distracted.

TreeDancer's picture

"No it wasn't...sorry" she

"No it wasn't...sorry" she said softly. He was being so kind to her and trying his best to cheer her up. She wanted to show her appreciation but her heart just wasn't into it. "I...don't really feel like going anywhere but..if you want to I'll follow" she muttered almost inaudibly.

"Shh." The stag would give

"Shh." The stag would give her a comforting nudge of his shoulder before he would slightly bite the inside of his cheek, thinking to himself. He knew a spot. "C'mon. We'll take it slow." He'd slowly rise to his hooves, waiting for her to do the same. He wouldn't ask much of her except that she follow. He took his time, making his way down the hill toward the Playground. Luckily they weren't very far away. Upon arriving the white stag guided the smaller doe toward the overhanging rock that had been such a dear part of his life. He led her beneath it, sheltered completely from the snow.

TreeDancer's picture

She did so, her legs stiff

She did so, her legs stiff from the cold. She stood there a moment, letting the snow fall on her before she slowly began to follow. Once under the overhanging rock she remained standing, looking up at the silent snow falling still around them bathing the forest in white. Soft clouds brust from her mouth with each breath. "I was looking forward to winter this year because my coat could handle it"she began. "Now...now I can't find it in me to even care..."

He stood beneath the

He stood beneath the overhanging, having to duck slightly because he was a big boy now. The stag would look at her, hearing the numbness in her voice. "I don't blame you," he muttered, "and you'll probably feel like this for a while, if I know anything about loss." He blinked silently. What was he to say? Her child was in a coma and might never wake up. How would he feel? As he watched her, he'd wonder whether he should offer up his services. Maybe she needed to vent, or rant. Or maybe he should just let her be? Decisions, decisions. Eventually, he couldn't not say anything. "Do you need.. to talk?"

TreeDancer's picture

She sighed and looked at him

She sighed and looked at him "No..thank you though" she said moving over to sit beside him, tucking her legs beneath her. "You're doing so much for me already. Thank you..."she nodded. She looked forward again at the snow. There had to be a way she could help her son. Anyway. Maybe she'd ask Nilo if he had any ideas as he was pretty good at healing as well. "I feel so lost" she said after a long pause.

The stag looked ahead, out

The stag looked ahead, out toward the snow. It seemed to be growing in density. "Don't mention it," he'd say in response to her words. A rift of silence found its way between them, only until she spoke again would he look away from the snow and back at her. What was he to say? Would she even register his words as a way of comfort? "Yeah." That was all he could muster. He scolded himself quietly, but said nothing else.

TreeDancer's picture

"Have you lost someone

"Have you lost someone before..." she asked as she looked up at him, her face pressed into his fur.

The stag took a moment to

The stag took a moment to reply, his gaze diverting from Eloa and toward the snow-covered world outside. "..In a way." He wondered if she'd press on it, considering he didn't really mind talking about it but the whole idea of bringing it back up after almost 20 years was... strange to him.

TreeDancer's picture

She looked up at him waiting

She looked up at him waiting for him to continue but she felt a twist in her heart as if she'd insulted him and looked away. "Sorry..."she whispered.

The stag bit his lip at

The stag bit his lip at hearing her words. He'd look down at her for a moment, seeing she wasn't meeting his gaze at first. He let out a small sigh. "My mother." He paused, cleared his throat a bit, and then continued. "She.. left when I was pretty young. I only knew her for my first few years so one day when she didn't come home, I wasn't too... devastated, I guess you could say. Confused, and sad, but nothing much else." Sage could vaguely even remember what his mother had looked like, but he knew that he'd gotten his snowy white pelt from his father. "But my siblings were torn. I learned what loss felt like through their emotions. The things they told me, the things they showed me. I don't know what true loss feels like, personally, but I damn well know what it looks like." His words drifted off, and his amber eyed gaze watched the snow flurries outside.

TreeDancer's picture

"I see..." she said giving

"I see..." she said giving him a gentle nuzzle. She didn't have blood parents at all, so she didn't understand that sort of love at least from his perspective. The pain though she could understand. Feeling abandoned, it was part of her fear and sadness now. She had to admit to herself that her fear and grief was partly due to not wanting to be left. To be abandoned. Though mostly it was out of love for her child. She went silent, watching the snow with him when an idea came to her. It came from the shadows, and recent events. Why she had not thought it before was beyond her. Her heart raced and she glanced up to make sure he had not seen that flash in her eyes. He was turned away and she sighed in relief. It was a dangerous idea and she did not want to tell a soul about it, not till she knew if it would work or not. "I wont vanish like that..."she added, not sure why but perhaps it came from her own fear of being left, she wanted him to know she'd never purposely leave him either.

He looked down at her for a

He looked down at her for a moment, surprised at her words. He lowered his gaze, smiling to himself. He hummed for a moment. "I'd hope not." He pressed his nose into the top of her head, a silent 'thank you.' He lowered his head to the ground then, feeling the soft soil underneath his chin. He wasn't sure whether or not he should say anything else. Subconsciously he knew she didn't have parents, having been an angel and all, but he still wanted to ask. However, realizing that may come as a 'sad' subject, he suppressed the question.

TreeDancer's picture

She gave a sad smile "I

She gave a sad smile "I promise" she added and settled her head down on the earth beside his. She took the silence between them as an opportunity to think on the plan she had. She'd have to find Nilo first which was the easiest, but convincing him on the matter would be something entirely different. She sighed and closed her eyes. Better to cross that bridge when she got to it than worry about it then. "I've been seeing you an awful lot...I hope I've not been taking too much time away from your other friends" she spoke softly, her white gold eyes turned to look at him.

The stag watched the forest,

The stag watched the forest, ceasing to move his gaze away from the distance birch woodlands even when the doe lay her own head beside his. His ears perked slightly, amber eyes ever watching. It wasn't until she'd speak again did he snap himself away from his thoughts and looked at her. He chuffed in amusement. "It's not like I have an ocean of other friends to talk to." He lifted a brow slightly. "I wouldn't worry too much about that, though. I saw most of them at the Twin Gods' Festival the other day." Sparing her a subtle smile, he'd look back at the world outside. "Besides, you're excellent company. They'd understand if they met you." He closed his eyes for a few moments, taking advantage of the moment to relax himself. It seemed she'd calmed down, after all.

TreeDancer's picture

She gave a soft smile and a

She gave a soft smile and a hum. He was too sweet. But she adored it none the less. "Oh..did you get that skull you wanted" she asked, ears perked forward in genuine interest. While she had not said it, Eloa was hoping to one day meet his friends as well. If they were friends with him they must be kind souls.

At the mention of the skull

At the mention of the skull mask, the white stag's eyelids flew open. "..yES I did!" He lifted his head, smiling enthusiastically. "AGH I totally forgot to tell you about it. It was amazing, I saw Velocity! In pERSOn! They were a lot fleshier than I'd expected, and bigger too, but they're not called Big Zombie Deer for nothin'-" In that instant the white stag was so thrilled about the memory that he'd almost forgotten how somber the mood had been only a few moments ago. He blinked, realizing this, and then cleared his throat. "Aha, sorry 'bout that." He chuckled embarrassingly before he'd look at her again.

TreeDancer's picture

She lifted her head slowly

She lifted her head slowly and giggled softly at his enthusiasm. Her head shook slowly and she nudged him. "Its ok, seeing you so excited is a welcome distraction from my numbness" she said all the while keeping her voice soft and low. "Are you going to decorate it?" she asked, keeping the conversation on his new skull.

The stag chuckled for a

The stag chuckled for a moment. He thought about; honestly, he was very content with the skull even in its blank state but he had no doubt a little color and decor would make it pop. "Well, I'd think so. Would you say my painting skills are good enough?" he'd inquire, motioning with his muzzle toward her pendant.

TreeDancer's picture

She laughed "Oh I don't

She laughed "Oh I don't know...." her lip quivered and she giggled again "Of course it is..I think you'd make a very beautiful skull" she smiled warmly.

At hearing her words he would

At hearing her words he would give her this look of sarcastic disbelief, only to laugh along with her. "Why thank you, ma'dam." He gave her a fancy little dip of his head, returning the warm smile. It was nice to see her like this again. Fidgeting, the stag suddenly decided to roll onto his back, his legs bent above him. He used to do this a lot when he was a spry young adolescent, of course he was much heavier now so the position caused him a good deal of discomfort. He'd roll back onto his side in a matter of seconds. "I miss the days where I was just a small and spindly little chap," he snickered at himself.

TreeDancer's picture

She watched him and laughed

She watched him and laughed hoping he'd not get stuck like that. "I don't know you seem pretty spry now" she laughed poking his stomach. He looked absolutely absurd like that and it was charming. When he rolled back to his side she poked him and shook her head.

At feeling her poke him yet

At feeling her poke him yet again, he let out a girlish cry and flailed his hooves slightly. "I'm not just a piece of meat, Prim!" he'd whine, only to break out into a laugh. Of course he was doing all of this for her amusement, although he was enjoying himself on the side. As long as she seemed entertained. In return, the stag lifted one of his chunky hooves and plopped it gently on Eloa's shoulder. Not hard, but hard enough so that she'd topple onto her side for a moment.

TreeDancer's picture

She giggled a bit louder

She giggled a bit louder this time. She was interrupted as she felt his large wet hoof smoosh on her side and tip her over. She flopped not so dramatically and looked at him with a 'how dare you' expression before laughing. She then hopped up, covering her self in mud thoroughly and climbed on his back smearing his lovely white fur with the mud. Finding his back quite comfy she remained there.

The stag sneered at her

The stag sneered at her expression, but in the midst of his laughter he didn't see the mule doe coat herself in mud before clambering on top of him. He would stiffen immediately, slowly turning his head to see her perched on top of him like some kind of snooty little bird. "I... cannot believe you," he'd whisper dramatically. He'd snort a few times, adding to his 'upset little kid' act before he would smack his lips and grumble. "Well I hope you're comfortable. Hmph hmph." He lifted his chin just like a spoiled little child would when denied something, adding a few more 'hmph's under his breath.

TreeDancer's picture

"Oh I'm very comfortable" she

"Oh I'm very comfortable" she said shimmying her body to squish the mud in more. She then dropped her head on his back and nuzzled her face in his thick fur. She really wasn't just being obnoxious however. After climbing up she found he really was comfy and refused to move just yet.

The stag would make a grump

The stag would make a grump face, though it was just for show. "It's not like I'm gonna be able to wash this off, considering the Pond's water is freezing by now." He lifted a brow as he said this, feeling her push the cask of mud further into his pelt. "You ungrateful little bean." He'd snort, hiding his smile from her as he looked ahead dramatically. Seemed he'd become her own personal nest.

TreeDancer's picture

She rolled off ,"Thats just

She rolled off ,"Thats just cause you're chicken" she smirked and bumped his shoulder with her rump before dashing off into the snow, kicking a small bunch of fresh flurries into his face before vanishing into the heavy snow fall.

The stag opened his mouth to

The stag opened his mouth to throw a response at her, but before he knew what was happening the weight was lifted off his shoulders and snow was kicked into his face. He shook his head frantically before he'd jump to his feet. After getting his bearings he managed to pinpoint the dusky-brown shape pelting away in the distance. He shouted after her, and with a grin he propelled himself forward and took off in her direction, kicking up flurries of snow in his wake. Shredding through the snow, he closed the gap between him and Eloa.

TreeDancer's picture

She let out a squeal of

She let out a squeal of laughter when she saw his shape come after her. His white fur blended in with the snow and it only fueled her flight or fight response to move faster. She just had to get to the crying idol before him. She pushed herself on, sending snow flying in all directions. Just as she reached the river she stretched her legs out and lept into the shallow pool at the base of the crying statues. She sent up a massive splash and stood their laughing. "You forget these are magical...and can be warm when its cold" she said moving under the waterfall , steam rising from the water around the pool. She glanced at him from under the water, giggling softly before kicking a little bit of water up at him.

He was almost on the verge of

He was almost on the verge of being on top of her until she sprung into the water at the foot of the Crying Idol. "Prim!" he shouted in surprise, quickly skidding to a halt alongside the riverbed. He peered down, only to see the doe paddling about in the seemingly warm waters of the Idol. "I..." He was flabbergasted. Twenty-one years and he still forgot that the entire forest was laced with magic. "Well aren't I the silly one." He felt warm water splash into his chest as Eloa splashed him, and he would let out a low chuckle. "You're askin' for it." He reared back a few steps, only to then catapult himself into the river. He sent a massive wave in all directions, even toward Prim's.

TreeDancer's picture

She hid behind the waterfall

She hid behind the waterfall when he had jumped in. The wave made it to her and drenched her entirely. Slowly she stuck her head out from behind the falls , a glare on her face that faded as soon as she'd made it. "You are so silly today" she giggled softly and walked out from behind the falls and paddled her way towards him. "You did help me feel better you know" she said bumping her head on him. "Thank you..but you dont have to try so hard you know" she laughed and paddled around him.

The stag surfaced, the long

The stag surfaced, the long fur on his cheeks hanging droopily with the weight of the water. He saw Eloa emerge from her hiding spot and begin to paddle toward him. He smiled as she'd head-butt him, but at her words his ears would flatten a bit. "Oh. Heh," he'd chuckle, "had the feeling I was overdoing it." He laughed and slowly sunk under the water, making sure the mud was clean off him as the river did its work. Eventually he re-surfaced, fountaining a spout of water from his pursed lips. "Can't believe I didn't know about this." He threaded the river water, the warmth absolutely blessing him.
