It was the best dream I remember having since I fell ill a long time ago. I was reunited with my adopted son, Xan, and together we walked down to the pond like old times. We sat at the edge and I rested my head on his shoulder, he slid a long, black tendril around my back. I drifted off to sleep against him, and when I awoke, he was gone. I didn't want to wake up from the dream, although it seemed very lifelike. Looking around at the pond and cattails I used to love so much as a young girl and frolick in were the last things I saw before I started to feel myself slipping. My vision had spots in it, and I tried to blink them out rapidly so that I could stay awake, but it was useless. I allowed the black to take over my eyes, creeping in from the corners and swallowing my sight. A moment passed, and I had the sudden urge to open my eyes again. Same place, same time of day it looked like, judging by the position of the sun through the trees. I was in the same place as I was, under the willow tree where I was born, when I thought I would wake up. I had to stand up and shake myself off from the fall. It was as if nothing had ever happened. Calling out to Xan to see where he was, I realize that I have the same voice as I used to have when I was an adolescent. Curiosity growing, I look down at my body. I used to have darker fur, but it has been replaced with light brown fur, spotted with specs of white. I tilt my head down and look up, past my forehead. I jump back when I see a dark, jagged bone hanging close to my head, and slam into the willow tree behind me. I don't remember having growths jutting out of the top of my head...that were this long, anyway. "Are you okay?" a strong voice resonates behind me. I turn my head, and see Xan standing behind me, making a series of worried clicking sounds. He hasn't changed a bit from when I last saw him. I decide to reply how I usually do, with a hint of teasing in my voice. I smile."Well, yes I'm..." A thought hits me like a two-ton weight to the head. I spin around, looking at him, looking at the tops of the trees towering above us, looking at the other deer playing and running around behind us near the twin gods.
I am not dreaming anymore.

I didn't know who I was or where I was for several days. My body felt as if a cold gust of wind was blown into me, reviving my senses. I wandered for days, searching for something. It was at the back of my mind, calling to me. Someone was here.... I knew who I was when I saw her. My dear friend, Jennie, who was by my side through my illness. She was surrounded by others, and as I walked up, I could feel others' eyes burning into the back of my head. She greeted me with the most surprised look on her face. I greeted her with a ton of nuzzles. Jennie and Unplugged pitched in to help me get back my fur, but the only pelt that was closest to my natural color was a light splotchy-brown. That would make sense, considering that it all fell out at one point. A comment was made about my antlers, too. How they've seemed to get darker and longer. That must have happened while I was sick, as well. A wave of gratitude washed over me. Right now, I could be dead. I'm old enough for it to happen, anyway. But I'm not. Still here and breathing, thanks to the gods. Laying down next to Jennie, I looked up at the sky and thanked them, slowly falling asleep.
