Nina Isi

Something was wrong. The air was thick and hot; hard to take in a fresh breath. Wheezing, I turned around from the half-finished hole I was digging to see the sky smeared with heavy streaks of black smoke. My mind was telling me to run, but my legs were firmly planted to the ground. Dazed, I watched as the trees in front of me were licked by the yellow-orange flames, turning them a sickly black color. The stench of burning wood followed my nose as I snapped back to my senses, bolting away from the blaze. The mistake I made was looking back. I had tripped, stumbling over a rock. Bewildered and hurt, I noticed the rock I had fallen over. The rock was smooth and round--not a scratch or crevice was on its surface. Never had I seen such a perfect-looking stone anywhere in any forest. A trail of burnt grass led away from the stone, into the heart of the fire.
And that was when I saw it; the cause.
Standing there, amid scorched ground and crackling trees, was a bubbling, churning mass of bright hot liquid. From my place on the ground, I could almost make out the form of a four-legged animal; complete with spiked, daunting antlers the color of charcoal.
My eyes were watering now, and the insatiable urge to cough was overwhelming. Exhausted, I laid my head down, keeping an eye on the fire.
It was approaching me, cautiously. The fiery, glowing mass of thick fluid was trapped under cracked, seemingly hard skin.
What I thought to be the face I was gazing at was actually two sunken holes and a melted, turned-down mouth.
Muffled murmurings escaped from the beast, who glared down at me, expressionless.
Horror gave way to fatigue as I blacked out.

It was just as hard to lift my eyelids as it was to breath. Slowly, my vision augmented from blurriness, revealing a large, dead circle of blackened grass I lay in.
A few feet off, the fire deer stood, studying me.
A fire deer. A Nina Isi.
Able to control the element of fire.
When it came close enough to where I was, I could see flames cloaking the hard, crusted body like a blanket.
"Bluhbluhbu", the creature uttered, spewing embers everywhere.
"Ahtunowhiho", I responded, as if I could understand what the elemental was saying.
In shock, I watched as a gust of smoky wind caught the runny part of the bottom of his face and turned it up into sort of a grin.
Awed, I declared to the being with much certainty that I would call him "Nina Isi".
Fire Deer.
