My Take on Herds

Redkora's picture
I see the issue of herds coming up again and again. Please know that this entry is not in reference to any particular player, and please read the whole post if you plan on commenting. I don't want to hurt people..

Copied and edited from a forum post:

I'm going to repeat myself on this subject, and after this, I will say no more. I do not mean this in a mean way. This is my just being frank.

Herds would be better suited to a game with a much larger map area and in an environment that encourages making groups that could be antagonistic toward one another, but this is not the case in this game.

Back in September/October of 2007, we had people starting herds. There were even threads with herd member sign-ups. This caused in-group/out-group animosity and drama. People wanted to be the boss, and people even went so far as to claim a part of the Forest for their herd and get in a tizzy when others would hang out in "their spots". The Forest was loud with bellowing and fighting at that time.

Michael and Auriea never, to my understanding, wanted to implement herds. All of the players are meant to be on equal ground and as part as one big community. Even the fawns, being new to the game, are treated with respect. The only players in this game who have any real authority are Michael and Auriea, the Twin Gods.

No matter what the environment, whenver you split people into easily identified groups, antagonism, competition, stereotyping, and other problems occur. I don't want any of this to come to the Forest.

For a scientific investigation of this, check out this page about the famous Robber's Cave experiment by Muzafer Sherif.

Really, I am not being mean. I just want to keep these problems from coming to the Forest.

You're absoloutely right.

You're absoloutely right. Smiling As much as I do like the idea, M&A clearly did not intend herds to be in the Forest.

Agreed. There is no real

Agreed. There is no real need for herds, unless multiple deer feel like following another, heh. (like...if michael appears. and once people chased me, that was scary, even if i didn't see them <<; )

Thank you for posting this.

Thank you for posting this. =]
(To add on: in my opinion, there already is a herd, and it's made up of everyone in the Forest.)

A few days ago I made a blog

A few days ago I made a blog entry regarding feeling out of place. While half of the blog was about the Forest and the other half was life in general, it seems that quite a few people feel 'out of place' already and there's fear that a herd would worsen this.

There's nothing wrong with considering certain deer as friends and hanging out with them in the Forest- there's also nothing wrong with there being certain deer you don't get along with- but having herds may cause more trouble than they'd be worth. Right now, everyone says that they'll take turns with being the leader but deep down we all know that's no true. Why? Because any sense of power can feed someone who is power hungry. They may grow bitter towards new deer or deer who "cross the line". Jealousy will arise and feelings will be hurt.

Newer deer may feel intimidated and might be discouraged from playing if they're not accepting. Of course we want this Community to grow so chasing off new deer isn't the best way to do that.

If you really want a herd, think this way: Every deer in the Forest is apart of one giant herd with the leaders being Michael and Auriea. Even though they might not be in the Forest in deer form, they're still the ones we answer to. So let's all play together nice to make them proud to lead "this big herd".

Redkora's analysis is right

Redkora's analysis is right on the money. Separation into herds will lead to alienation, competition, territoriality and open aggression.

We are one herd, and our shared territory is the Endless Forest.

I agree on this too. I know

I agree on this too. I know how herds act in real life and it's fighting over territory. The Endless Forest is for all of us, I don't think anyone would like to have it seperated in different areas. I mean, I like running through the forest. The whole forest!

And like many of us said, we are all one big herd ^^
