Hey everyone!
So this is my first try drawing a deer. I used watercolors (:
Feel free to criticize my drawing, cause I just started drawing (this year) and I would like to know what is bad and what is good.
Thank you!
The colors are all great and I'm a bit envious of how well you're already using them!
I'm not in the right mindset to critique, but I'd love to pass along some advice.
I found the greatest leap in my knowledge of cervine anatomy came when I started drawing them as mannequins, kind of like this: x
I started by drawing simple shapes for the body and marking where the joints were directly over the image and then taking the image away and studying how things connected together.
By no means am I an expert yet, nor am I a popular artist, but once I figured out how to reference deer by using this technique, they became significantly easier and even more fun to draw them
Thank you, FishBiscuit, for the help! That means a lot to me (: One time I even tried it, but... did not go so well. Right now I`m only good at coping pictures, but I hope that I will develop into a better artist (:
Oh, I forgot about this! Unplugged has a nice collection of artist's references here, on the right section.
Fish gave great advice I feel like the only extra thing i can add is also pay attention to the negative space (the space around the deer) as you draw as well. Draw slowly and focus on the relation of the whole to its parts. One thing If found helpful is to pull up a photo of a deer and draw it's skeleton (a simplified one) over it then throw out the picture and look at the skeleton without the image. It will give you a good idea of how it is made up without that extra info to confuse you. NOW take that same skeleton image, look at the picture you used and while just looking at the picture add the skin over the skeleton. Its a slow process but it gives your hand and eyes good practice. Then to simplify this process you can use Fish's circles and shapes method which is a tried and true method for artists You can't go wrong for sure. Other than that this is beautiful. I love how the colors blended (and you made it look digital which i think is freaking cool) Keep up the awesome work. You'll only get better. I was terrible at animals/deer before joining the site and I've been here for at least 4 -5 years and have improved so much.
Thank you so much TreeDancer! :3 I hope that I will improve doing this
Oh and this is digital art (: I made it with wacom tablet which I got for my birthday and this is my first try on it
Again, thank you a lot for the help!
