”Come ON, you slowpoke!”
I believe she had always been like that.
”Damnit, Gehirn, where are you with your head today?
”Hm? Oh.. I’m here, don’t worry.”
I believe I’ve always been good at lying.
Her bright purples against her black fur had always been an interesting subject. Though, not so much when she was still young. The others were teasing her constantly.
I used to protect her, being quite larger as the other fawns.
We grew up together.
”There they are… They haven’t heard us have they? Gehirn?
”You should be quiet, then. They’ll run off if you keep chatting to me.
She turned into a beautifull, sleak doe. Powerfull as well. Unlike the others, whom would wait in their dens until their herd leader would return. She? She was always out there, hunting, drawing blood, beating up the other stags.
I really liked that in her.
”Haha! See, I told you I’d catch the biggest one.”
”I know that. I didn’t say I doubted you.”
I became the new herd leader, she became my mate. She would bear the next leader. And one that would be! I was assured of that, such a powerfull doe as her, and a stag like me.
”I can see the other doe’s are with child these days…”
She was so disappointed.
“Are you giving up? Don’t worry so much, Chism.”
”What if I can’t?”
”You can. Each doe can.”
But she couldn’t.
The herd I had assembled carried one silver coloured doe. She wasn’t anywhere near as strong nor fast as Chism was. More of the “waiting in my den” type. But she was dang beautifull.
She gave me a son. A really energetic little fella, his fur shone as beautifull as his mothers, but he clearly bore my markings and eyes.
I explained to Chism, that he would become my follow up. And she got furious.
”Why didn’t you tell me about her!?”
”What? Please calm down love, you know we’re in a herd and-“
”I’m supposed to give birth to the leader! Not some snobby little herd doe! I’m your mate!”
”Chism, really, you know you can’t.”
”Who’s giving up whom here now?”
She had been trembling all over her body, eyes as red as mine. She ran off, if I remember correctly. I hadn’t seen her after that for days.
I couldn’t understand what her problem was back then. It was simple to me. I lead that herd. I was the only male.
But I believe she was jealous.
I spend my days with the little boy, Sonneillon. He loved to try and topple me over, so once in a while I let him succeed. The doe would watch us, but one day, she was gone.
Neither of us thought something of it. She would be grazing somewhere, most likely.
So much for that. As soon as the scent of blood reached my nostrils, I felt I had been taken down as well. I lost control over my muscles, and soon felt the earth against my face. She had been silent, this time, stealthy, quick. Her poison quickly took me down.
”So this is the boy.”
She towered over him. Wearing the skull she had taken from a fellow stag whom challenged her.
“Please.. Chism.. What are you doing..”
”Well, he’s next on my list, you know.”
There’s so much from that day I want to forget. That poor boy’s screaming, he didn’t stand a chance. I could only watch. She was gone as soon as her poison had left my vessels.
I found the silver doe’s body soon after.
Weeks passed, without the black and purple doe. My hunters had tried to locate her, but without success. She was not like the others, I would warn them.
As my little boy had died, so had my newborn brother. We buried them together. Chism didn’t harm my brother, no, he was a totally different story.
I only saw her soon after the fire had spread. We were running for our lives, me and my herd, when she showed up from the bushes, running next to me, pleading to me to forgive her.
I stopped running for a moment. She looked battered, her eyes as red as before. Sad, even. Maybe she realized what she had done.
I lowered my antlers and threw her aside, back towards the fire.
Her scream assured me she had broken something, and I continue’d to lead my herd away.
Not a lot survived. Me and a few others arrived in this forest. They, now, have left as well. They couldn’t cope with the way this forest works. I don’t blame them. We used to hunt, now, we’re the hunted.
I didn’t like this place either.
