Just a little definition for you. (Glossary of player terms on TEF and Elsewhere.)

I have seen a lot of this on here... this misinterpretation. Here's a little helpful hint as to what each abbreviation really means and how to use it.

Character Labels: OC (Original Characters) FC (Fan Character) FMC (Fan Made Character) SIC (Self-insert Character)

Play Labels: IC (In Character) OOC (Out of Character)

"OC" means Original Character. You created this character. This is YOUR character. Played IC all the time.

"FC" means Fan Character. This is a character based heavily off one from the media. The player did not create this character and will be playing it according to how it acts/is in the media it was created to be in.

"FMC" means Fan Made Character. This means that the character is based off of media, but the character itself is not one of the real characters.

SIC or OC/OOC: The "Self-Insert Character" is the representation of a person in the forest through a character that is just like themselves and/or how they wish to be. The only things I could liken it to is a Fursona or an Avatar. They may have special stories or character traits, but it all boils down to the "OOC" part: These deer represent their players. On TEF, there are a few SIC deer. This means that these are the physical representations of their player in the forest.

"IC" means In Character. This means the character is disassociated with the player. They have their own thoughts, personality, and actions that do not represent the player. Please remember that if am IC character is mean to your deer it may not be because the player dislikes you, but the character may have a reason for his/her actions.

"OOC" means Out Of Character. This is context not related to any character. It's like IRL. (In Real Life).[/i]

When to assume OOC Activity for an OC unless specifically stated by the player:
  • When you asked for a spellspam on the community site and they come to help
  • When a deer is performing a bunch of unrelated actions in a row, as if testing out the actions bar
  • If a deer is frozen in one action. This usually means technical difficulties
  • Trolling is considered OOC, and therefore the PLAYER'S action and not their character's.
You should consider most other actions as IC unless stated otherwise.

I haven't actually noticed

I haven't actually noticed this issue but yes. Smiling I think a general list of RPing terms would be useful too.
On another note, I'd file the OOC/OC-mix under self-insert characters respectively, but I haven't seen that term used by anyone, probably since some believe it to have bad connonations.

Never hear much of this "OC"

Never hear much of this "OC" thing, all these years I've been rping there have been two forms; IC and OOC.

I haven't run into IC/OOC meshing much until I came here. Elsewhere, it has always been you have a character, and it is IC. You use OOC(often accompanied by brackets) when saying something yourself. Ex: person A; -posts- / Person B; (I'll respond in a moment).

It wasn't until I came here that I realized how much IC and OOC can be meshed together. So now IC to me is a character that does not share your thoughts opinions/is played strictly per their personality, whereas OOC is a character that will share your thoughts opinion and breaks from typical IC standards. Not so much traits.

I've been RPing for years and have never put so much thought into it before. I"m so accustomed to just IC and OOC and its simplicity.

So my question is; there is no way a character can be IC AND OOC, it has to be OOC/OC?
What if this character is IC most of the time, which is also an OC, but you break from IC quite often to be OOC?

Maybe I'm putting too much thought into it, lol.

How I see it, OC is just a

How I see it, OC is just a sub-category of IC, Fan-characters being the other case of IC. As such, "OOC/OC" is interchangable with "OOC/IC", just with the specifics that they're not fan-character-based. If it were a character (read:purely IC) with the player's traits, I would call it a self-insert.

What you mention about IC with OOC tendencies, strictly speaking, I would categorize it as OOC in first place, simply due to the fact that such a character is not purely IC. OOC carries a much broader range than IC, probably because stating a character as IC but having OOC tendencies can be confusing, misleading and cause hurt feelings.

I wouldn't worry too much about labels. Explaining it the way you did ("IC, but often played OOC") is probably much, much easier..

I think I just might post a

I think I just might post a list of terms on here, to go with my blog on "manners" XD

Alright, Guys, I will need your help though. As I update this post, please critique me.

And Sianna, OC's are played IC. IC just means In Character, where OC means the character itself is your original character. So you play your OC's IC, naturally.

Tracking this because

Tracking this because recently I've been getting a little confused with all those definition.
Hm... I guess my main deer is an SIC which I play according to my feelings and my own personality ... and therefore he's kinda IC too? @_@
