[I may as well post...

[I may as well post... although I know none of the deer mentioned...]

The cold invigorated Revtheyr. He had transformed within the past few weeks. A sickly, out-of-sorts youth.. to a vibrant lithe, and quick-witted dancer of the forest. In human form, he twirled and spun, leaped and jumped, cartwheeled and grooved his way into the silence of the forest, moving to music only he could hear. A great gift of the Gods for the season of giving. And it had given him a purpose - a niche. Something he was good at, and something he loved doing.

It was this that he was doing - in the middle of the woods - if someone else came upon him. Usually, he preferred to have an audience to play to. But sometimes, he just had to dance, dainty hooves shining as they struck the ground after a leap, or his fanciful costume dazzling the eye, as the many colors spun round and round - seemingly out of control.

The music in his head played a merry, lively tune, making the dance just that much more enjoyable. His ears twitched to the music, and his human hands held bark-cymbals that made a lovely clack when pinched together at one another. So caught up in his dance was he, that he didn't even notice whether or not anyone was watching.

and my friends are my strength."

Terpsichore is always looking

Terpsichore is always looking for someone to dance with. His tiny hooves guide him across the frosty grass in a meandering, hopping path, as if he's listening to music only he can hear. The way his head bobs and weaves and he skips over obstacles, zig-zagging through the woods, might lead one to questioning the sanity of an adult deer, but since he is only a young fawn it's acceptable behavior.

When he does see another deer dancing, he's quick to dash over and try to join in, hoping he won't be rebuffed.

((Hope that's okay? You guys have to tell me if I breach any rules of etiquette here, since I'm new to this community.))

(If you don't mind, Arrikanez and Quaesting, I'll let you guys go ahead with yours and Seryyn is welcome to jump in whenever if she wants. I really suck at deer-playing and especially if my characters are unfamiliar with everyone else, so I'll wait and join in later if no other opportunities come up. xD)

[No problem,

[No problem, Fled~]

Surprised that a deer-child would willingly come up to a human-form deer, he paused in his dancing to study the fawn. Apparently, the little one saw no threat in him at the moment, which was good. Having hooves instead of feet, and retaining the ears, antlers, and horn... probably helped the image. But he was still human-form, and it more than shocked him that a deer - even a baby one - would approach him.

"Hello there..." he said, softly. "Are you lost?"
"I am not the Kirin Prince my father wished me to be. I am the three-horned darling of the Forest,
and my friends are my strength."
quaesting's picture

Having never seen a human

Having never seen a human being, nor anything similarly shaped, Terpsichore has not learned any reason to fear. He is also sometimes bold to the point of foolish, but nothing in this forest has harmed him yet, and the worst experiences he's had were other deer chasing him off for annoying them with his incessant dancing. He thinks this other fellow is a strange looking deer indeed, but he's dancing, and that's what matters most.

The little fawn gives a high leap that becomes a part of the dance, and shakes his head a little, smiling and slightly breathless from the constant activity. He weaves and turns circles and answers brokenly between steps. "Don't know... where I'm going... so I guess... not?" He seems happy enough, anyway.
Arrikanez's picture

Laughing a bit, Rev admired

Laughing a bit, Rev admired the fawn's bravery, bravado... or simply naivete. One of those, or all three, was what he figured the fawn was experiencing to be able to approach him, when even his friend Virgil would turn away in panic should he see him like this. It was a welcome change. He smiled.

"I see you dance, young one." he said, watching the fawn.

And he DID dance. Rather well. But he was lacking direction and technique - perhaps that would come with age. For the time being, Rev simply joined into the dance, trying to match his movement's to the fawn - rather than his own music.
"I am not the Kirin Prince my father wished me to be. I am the three-horned darling of the Forest,
and my friends are my strength."
quaesting's picture

It's probably a combination

It's probably a combination of all three, and his unconcern with where he is shows a certain lack of common sense. He'd like to dance and twist and turn as gracefully as his new friend does, even if the strange deer does seem to be short a pair of legs, but Terpsichore is still a very young fawn, and sometimes his own legs get in the way of each other. He's concentrating on following his own music, which he seems to hear most of the time and is always trying to catch up to. At his age it's probably very energetic music, and it involves a lot of hopping and buoyant frivolity.

The cherubic little face beams at what he sees as a compliment. "Oh yes! Always always dancing always there's... music in the air it's like... scent you have to move just... right sometimes to catch it and... you can't see it but it's there even... though you can't!" He's so enthusiastic about communicating this that he almost trips over himself and has to untangle his legs for the next leap.

Sambreel stopped in her

Sambreel stopped in her tracts as she witnessed the sight in front of her. It was quite... amusing, she summed. A young fawn and a... what was that thing? It looked slightly human, but had antlers and hooves... Well, he smelled of the forest, so he couldn't be that bad. And his dance was quite good. Sambreel was never one for dancing, but even she could see that both beings down there had talent.

Sambreel moved her feet side to side in an attempt to dance, knowing that if she did much else, she'd make a fool of herself. She softly hummed a upbeat tune while staying in the shadows, hoping not to cause attention to herself.\

Rev turned a bit, and caught

Rev turned a bit, and caught the stumbling fawn, setting him on a straight path again, but halting his forward movement to do so - in such a manner that he had time to catch his balance again.

"Woah there, young one! If you do not take time to understand the movements you make, you are simply burning energy. Which, of course, there is nothing wrong with. But it is truly grace and polish that makes a dancer."

He physically posed the fawn's legs in such a manner as to leap with a bit more balance and poise.

"Now... like this. JUST so... Leap with the tips of the hooves, and land with the intention of planting one's hooves in the soil. Watch."

He took off, lept neatly, and softly landed with nary a jar to his delicate frame. He executed another jump, but this time turned just as he became airborne. The result was a beautiful arc-spin combo that landed him in the opposite direction he'd been facing.

"You see? You must always seek to CARESS the air - not plummet through it."
"I am not the Kirin Prince my father wished me to be. I am the three-horned darling of the Forest,
and my friends are my strength."
quaesting's picture

He's not used to being nudged

He's not used to being nudged around so, but he takes the direction, letting the weird-looking stag pose his gawky legs just so. He sways and twitches throughout with barely-restrained energy, as if he can't quite stop moving, and the only moment he's still is when he watches the stranger leap and turn. Then his eyes grow wider with awe and admiration, and he makes a leap in an attempt to mimic the move. It's not nearly so graceful, but it's an improvement. Once he lands he's on the move again, swaying and hopping and turning in place. "If I take so much time won't the music run away while I'm still preparing? I have to catch it!" He leaps higher, tries to turn at the same time, and lands a little clumsily looking at the unfamiliar doe swaying under the trees.
Arrikanez's picture

The three-horned deer laughed

The three-horned deer laughed again, and shook his head gently at the little one.

"No, dear one. Music has no legs, but the legs you give it. What floats through the air is only there as long as you SHOW it. If you are forever running off to catch up to the song, the song will never be seen to others."

He smiled, and knelt to scratch the fawn's ears. "Do you understand?"

Scythe:

Despite the bitter winter chill that lingered in the evening air, there was no evidence that it was a deterrent to the multitude of faces that embraced the night in the search for a way to celebrate the inauguration of a new year. Many were mulling around with friends, many more were counting down the last hours in bars with rowdy shouts still audible to the quiet street-goers, himself included. It was cold but quite beautiful, glowing amber lamps lined along the street and the steady rush of water below the bridge he waited on. A smile crossed his lips as he remembered. He stood on the very bridge that over a year ago he first saw her. While it was a more or less complicated memory, it was nevertheless a significant one.
His gloved fingers fidgeted in his pockets, and a visible breath escaped him. Below, on the dark river, a boat waited by the dock, taking on a few people as time passed. It was a river tour, enabling a good view of the promised fireworks at the moment of the clock striking midnight. It had seemed a pleasant enough way to celebrate, and so he had invited her out to meet him here, all without telling her what she would be expecting. Whenever she asked what he was inviting her out to, he responded with only silence and a playful grin.
The night in store for them seemed promising.

Meanwhile, a young woman made

Meanwhile, a young woman made her way down the street, her hands comfortably concealed deep within the pockets of her vest. She held her arms close to her sides as if to hold onto her warmth, but she shivered nonetheless, perhaps out of excitement. Ever since she was a child, she had always enjoyed the winter months, anticipated Christmas, and welcomed the new year: the sights and sounds of the holiday and the companionship of family and friends. This year was no exception in that sense, but it piqued her curiosity in another. Wyvern smiled softly as she pictured Fledermaus' silly grin in the back of her head. She could not figure out what he was up to, but it didn't matter. Simply sharing the evening with him would be more than enough for her.

Wyvern's footsteps began to slow into a more thoughtful pace as the amber lighting illuminated a single silhouette on the bridge before her. Her blue eyes softened, one hand unpocketed to rest upon the railing. "Hello, Fled." Her voice was but a whisper, greeting the air itself, but his presence reassured her. Suddenly, the night wasn't so cold anymore.

The night gave another icy

The night gave another icy sigh, brushing across his face as he turned his head away from the wind but not before it rustled through his hair and drew it down over his eyes, to which he hastily shook it back into place. With humbled chocolate-brown eyes fixed on the hazy distance, he failed to notice anyone approaching until her hushed voice brought on his full attention.
"Hey, there you are." He grinned, welcomed her with a hug and a peck on the cheek. Hair-tossing breeze and color-draining temperatures notwithstanding, she was beautiful. It became difficult to tell if the fluttering in his chest was subsiding with her calming presence, or instead encouraged. Still with no intention of revealing the nature of their plans until they began, Fledermaus took her warm hand with his and led the way to the road leading off from the bridge they stood on.
"Come on," he encouraged lightly, smiling with a glance at her as their brisk footsteps headed toward a stone stairwell leading down the bank.

Wyvern held onto their

Wyvern held onto their embrace, for a moment resting her head on his shoulder, before pulling away and being kissed lightly on the cheek. His affection always brought a faint blush to her face and she beamed behind her bright blue eyes. Or rather, through them. They were as expressive as her smile, even as the cold continued to play with the evening air.

"Where are we going?" she chuckled quietly, her hand now comfortably carried in his. She knew that he would simply smile, promise to tell her later or reply with a You'll see, but she couldn't help it. She had to try, even if only to see that silly grin again.
Fledermaus's picture

"All in good time," he baited

"All in good time," he baited playfully, wearing a broad grin. The chilled air picked up as he led her along in a near jog, tossing the striped navy scarf around his neck in front of his face. Predictably, his shoe subsequently hit an icy patch on the sidewalk, inciting a rather awkward stumbling and nearly complete fall if he hadn't managed to regain his balance. The man couldn't suppress his laughter as he scrambled back up, attracting the odd passing glance from people nearby. "You didn't see that." He breathed with a teeth-bearing smile.
They came to the edge of wide stairs lining along the bank of of the river. At the bottom, the tour boat still waited- drifting lazily in place at the dock as a man stood by, collecting tickets. Fledermaus glanced at her, pulling a couple of tickets out of his coat pocket.
"It sounded pretty good- pretty nice view of the fireworks, from what I heard." He shrugged, still smiling. "You in?"
Scythe's picture

"I knew that you would say

"I knew that you would say something like that," she returned playfully before continuing for the road that lead off from the bridge. It was true that the wind had picked up once more, casting her hair just over her eyes for a moment. However, she, too, had overlooked the icy patch and soon found herself clinging to Fledermaus' sleeve, black shoes sliding in an awkward display of motion and giggles. Even as he returned to his feet, she found her hands clinging to the fabric of his coat, that quiet laughter rolling in like snowflake flurries. "Don't worry. I'm not going to tell anyone," she smiled, her face flushed, but contented in his cheerfulness.

It wasn't long before they found their way past the occasional glance and to the river's edge. Wyvern tilted her head thoughtfully, taking in the scenery, the slow rippling of the water against the bank, nature's black canvas until midnight. Her eyes then flickered from the pair of tickets to his expression. "Of course."
Fledermaus's picture

His grin broadened, if at all

His grin broadened, if at all possible, and his hand lightly squeezed hers. "Alright, let's go." He spoke with a voice tinted in cheerfulness, before heading down to the almost decrepit wooden dock. The weathered older man, presumably the owner, took their tickets as they boarded. They were among few other people who were mostly couples themselves, but it certainly wasn't crowded. Perhaps most people favored a more traditional approach to celebrating the new year. Nevertheless, the concept was promising; the city's river was quite scenic, especially in winter. Dense forests lined the banks with barren frosted branches reaching towards the vast black sky.
Finding a cleared spot near the bow, he leaned up against the steel railing and turned to her. "Wonder how much time we have?" He voiced his thoughts out loud, reaching for the tarnished silver pocketwatch chained to his coat, which displayed it as 11:24. Moments thereafter, the deck beneath them gently jolted forward as the vessel began chugging along slowly.
Scythe's picture

Wyvern nodded gently and

Wyvern nodded gently and allowed herself to be lead to the old dock. However, she maintained her expression on her own; it wasn't a difficult task, easier than containing her excitement or walking on ice. She always enjoyed surprises and, ultimately, was thankful that Fledermaus had done such a good job at keeping it secret. With the occasional glance in his direction, she followed him to the front of the boat.

"Not long now," Wyvern replied cheerfully after looking at her own watch, a simple timepiece on her left wrist. "...This is so exciting. Another new year..." she rested her hands on the railing for a moment with a quick hop in her heels. All the while, her blue eyes flickered to the night sky in thought. "It went by so quickly. It always does, but I wouldn't change a thing." She returned her attention to Fledermaus, a smile in her statement. "Any New Years resolutions?" she questioned quietly, "Or are we supposed to wait until after midnight?"
Fledermaus's picture

"Mhm," he mused as she spoke

"Mhm," he mused as she spoke of the new year, following her gaze up to the night sky. Wouldn't change a thing. The phrase brought another smile to him; grateful knowing that she shared his sentiments exactly. The year had been nothing short of perfect- save for some recent troublesome developments which were becoming harder to stay out of. But with the exception of associated stress, he'd happily live through the whole year again.
"Resolutions...hm," He pondered out loud, briefly acknowledging the accomplishments he'd already gotten out of they way. "Oh, the odd thing here and there. Might look for another job, and I'll have to buy a car at some point." He chuckled before looking back to her. "How about you?"
Scythe's picture

"A car...and another job for

"A car...and another job for that matter, both sound rather tempting," she chuckled quietly. "Realistically, though?" she thought aloud, "I would like to be more outgoing. It is something of an ongoing struggle for me." Another laugh followed suit, her breath collecting in the cold night air. "I would also like to get in touch with my family. My mother, even my father," her blue eyes settled on a particular star. "Maybe I will actually do that this year." Optimistic, she turned to Fledermaus once more, that smile still upon her face. "I still can't believe that it's going to be 2010 in just a few minutes."
Fledermaus's picture

He found himself nodding in

He found himself nodding in understanding, realizing that a lot of her resolutions held a bit of relevance to a few goals of his own. Subtle and always nagging at the back of his mind for years now, but never gathering enough motivation to enact. "Mhm, those are good ideas. And if possible I'd be glad to meet your parents someday." He responded thoughtfully, thinking that perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad idea to go visit his own parents sometime; introduce them to Wyvern; get out of the country for a bit. Easier said than done, of course.
Her cheerful voice grounded his thoughts once more as she reminded him there was naught but a few minutes left. "Ah, right-" He spoke hastily, momentarily noticing that a few people around them had been eagerly following their watches for a short time, with some counting out loud. The calm and dark course ahead of them continued on toward the mouth of a lake, providing a clear view of the distant barge that would be shooting up fireworks in a minute's time. The man noticed his fingers were restless between the cold and bit of anticipation by the time he heard the chants of gathering voices starting to count down from one minute.
Scythe's picture

"I would like that," she

"I would like that," she replied with a subtle nod of her head. She continued quietly, realizing that she was treading upon thin ice, now in the figurative sense. However, with the new year came new possibilities among other things. Perhaps they both could resolve their distant differences with their families. ""And, maybe, I can meet yours someday as well."

Wyvern smiled, optimism beaming in the blush of her face. She giggled, another hop in her heels. "Oh my goodness, we should start counting, shouldn't we?"
Fledermaus's picture

"Yep, definitely." he agreed,

"Yep, definitely." he agreed, after noticing that the time was slipping by, evidenced by the growing number of people anxiously chanting the seconds. He turned to face the vast lake out in front of them, admiring how enchanting it looked under a night sky, albeit slightly unnerving. There was always that sliver of anxiousness associated with open water. But tonight it seemed to mostly melt away.

The counting broke into cheering and celebration. Fledermaus gave her a hug and the customary kiss, moments before the echoing boom in the distance and an eruption of gold sparks in the sky. One after another, a series of colorful displays lit up the whole area and reflected off the water in glittering flashes. For someone who rarely saw fireworks in person, it was rather fascinating. But he couldn't watch for long as there was other business to attend to.
"Wyvern, I have something to ask you," he started while dipping a numb hand into his coat's pocket. He lowered down to one knee, which was easy given that they were weak with nervousness already. "You've been wonderful to me from day one, and I can't think of anything I'd love more than to spend the rest of my life with you." Presenting the ring to her with hopeful eyes and an unwavering smile, he breathed the question. "Will you marry me?"

Wyvern's expression

Wyvern's expression brightened considerably as she joined the others in counting down the remaining seconds. "Ten...nine...eight..." she paused to get in another grin, taking in Fledermaus' expression. "Seven...six...five...four...three...two...one..." It was then that the cheering erupted, fireworks of the verbal variety, gold on black and blue, red on even the fairest of faces. The sound, though exhilarating, was the bigger picture, a scene between two people now being painted within it. "Happy New Year, Fled," Wyvern whispered warmly, drawing him into an embrace and sharing the first kiss of the new year with the man that meant so much to her. She took a brief moment to gaze at the fireworks display, at lighting as powerful and delicate as the flick of an artist's brush. The colors that they lent to night's black canvas were simply breathtaking when one took the time to admire them. However, her bright blue eyes fondly returned to her boyfriend as she was addressed by name.

Wyvern, I have something to ask you, she tilted her head thoughtfully, wondering just what could be going through his head at that very moment. It wasn't until she watched one hand reach into a pocket, until she watched him lower himself to one knee that fingertips delicately reached for the soft curve of her lips. They never quite made it there. It was then that the roar of the fireworks diminished, the voices of their company blurred into the background, such that Wyvern took in every heartfelt word. The blue of her eyes grew humble, honest tears welling at the corners. "Fledermaus, of course...I mean yes...yes!" She smiled, ear to ear. Anxious, enamored, and exhilarated in a manner familiar only to fate itself.

(I saw this coming a few posts ago, but I'm still so happy for them both. ^__^ Fled is adorable by the way, and I'm sorry for keeping you both waiting for so long.
