Random household objects. I felt that the piebald color helped to lend to the domestic theme of the piece, and the yellowish-brown color of its pelt were colors that I closely associated with my childhood.

To further explain what I meant with the markings on the deer itself; you would usually see this sort of two-tone, or piebald, coloring on domestic animals--like on most dogs. That's not to say that there aren't solid-colored dogs, but we usually think of deer as being solid colored or having fairly predictable coat patterns. So, in order to keep with the domestic theme, I chose the piebald coloration.
