Are you connected to the internet? At the bottom right hand corner of your screen, there should be a coloured dot. Red means you are not connected, so won't be able to see deer. Orange is connected, but you are not logged in, and green is logged in and connected.

Do you see any of the pictograms (symbols) around the black edge of your screen? They should be yellow or purple. If you don't see anything, go into the menu by pressing "Esc", the click the word "Display", and there should be an option for "show other players", make sure that the slider there is all the way to the right.
