Halloween was just rolling around, and Skokey wanted to see the Giant Deer with his own eyes. Word spread quickly that the Dark Lord was returned, and he remembered the stories he heard from older deer.
He trotted away from the slab, when he heard his name. He whirled around to see Fenqua come up behind him.
"Where are you going?" She asked, her smile never fading.
"I'm just gonna go check out if that Big Zombie Deer is back. I've never seen him before."
"Oh... Well, neither have I. Can't I come?" Skokey almost responded, when the fawns started to bleat, as if on cue. "Oh, yeah..."
Skokey let out a soft chuckle and kissed her cheek. "Tell you what... When I come back, you can go see it, and I'll look after them for you. Sound fair?"
Fenqua smiled, "Sounds fair. I'll see you later then."
Skokey nodded his goodbye, and ran off. He had heard several chilling cries from the easily obtained Skull masks, but after an entire morning of listening to it, he wasn't too moved.
Skokey neared the Old Oak. He shuddered, just the thought of it being in the Oak was bad enough. But he noticed that the daylight was becoming darker. Before he knew it, he was encased in a thick fog. Skokey could barely see anything passed five feet around him. But he knew he was close. A looming, ominous shadow of the giant tree was not too far away. To add on to that, the Skull mask bellows became loud and clear, and even a few zombie deer passed by him.
He became a little unnerved. The Oak and the fog as enough for him, but he knew it wouldn't go away. He didn't know there would be fog. He slowed his pace, becoming cautious, and jumping at every noise he heard. He finally came to the Oak, and took a peak.
Several zombie deer were inside. In the middle, was a gigantic deer, even bigger than he imagined, sleeping amongst his followers. The Dark Lord rested peacefully while the other zombies danced and played.
Skokey looked around, and could see smiles in the small cracks of the masks, and could hear eerie laughter everywhere. He smiled. Why not have some fun? It's better than being scared half to death all the time. He gathered himself, and sat down next to the sleeping giant. A familiar noise was heard, and a familiar light was brought about.
Skokey almost jumped when he found that the spell was being thrown back on him. But he knew what it was about, he saw his pelt turn grey and felt his flesh rot peacefully. A cold wind rushed into the Oak, and through his exposed ribs. He gave a little shiver, but soon ran around looking for pines and ever-disgusting mushrooms.
The pinecone was eaten, the antlers were cast. The mushrooms were found, the gag reflex was overcome, and the mask was cast. Skokey felt much better now that he looked like everyone else. He let out a bellow. Instead of jumping and shaking like he normally did, he laughed. He found a group and danced, enjoying the different and slightly haunting music.
But something struck him. Something he didn't really remember. He unconsciously sneezed off everything. Absolutely everything, so that nothing was different. He slowly trotted over to the Pond, under the willow where Fulu and Zilant found residence. He looked into the tree and found Fulu's Crying mask. He put it on, and without missing a beat, he made his way for the Playground.
For some reason, he made sure Fenqua or the twins didn't see him at all. He crept onto the boulder with the most candles, and gathered them onto his antlers. Then, something made him run back to the fog.
When he realized he was in a different place, he looked around. How did I get this on?... He thought, examining his new costume. He shrugged it off with a smirk and decided to keep it, since it was still Halloween. He went over to his friend Wyvern, who had just arrived.
Wyvern, aquiring the final piece to her zombie costume, smiled under the bleached mask. "Hello, Skokey. Enjoying the fun, I see?"
Skokey smiled and chuckled, "Yeah, I guess I just didn't want to be a zombie like everyone else."
"I can't blame you, these antlers are.." she grunted slightly, "really heavy."
Skokey and Wyvern saw a conga line start. Skokey looked over to her, "Wanna go join them?"
Wyvern nodded, "Of course!"
They made their way over to the line. Skokey made sure he was inbetween the line and Wyvern, making it more obvious he wasn't a zombie. He found it amusing. But as soon as he started dancing, his legs cramped. Skokey let out a soft cry, and balled up in his spot a little.
Wyvern stopped and lowered her head. "Are you alright?"
Skokey nodded, "Yeah... My legs cramped for some reason. I'll be over there, I'll come back later."
"Okay..." Wyvern tried to say more, but Skokey was already trotting away.
He got close to where the fog stopped. Stop where you are.
He stopped, and looked around. "W.. Who said that?"
Don't escape the fog. If you know what's good for you.
Skokey huffed. "Says you, I'll go wherever I want." He took a few more steps, and his stomach instantly cramped. He fell to the ground, yelping at the sudden pain.
I told you not to leave the fog. Now you know what will happen.
He scuddled back far enough into the fog for the pain to go away. "Why are you doing this? Who are you?"
Who I am is none of your concern. And I'm doing this, because I must see my love again. I must see him before he disappears for another year.
"Your love?... You mean that fricking giant deer? HE'S your love?" Skokey looked around to make sure no one was looking at him.
Yes. He was once. And before he became what he is now, I was killed. He lives in everlasting vengeance. I live in an everlasting chase.
"... Okay, I understand... Why me, though? Do you even know me?"
No, not really. But you were the closest one. Anyway, I will be holding your body from now on until the Dark Lord goes back into the darkness. You cannot escape the fog that follows him. You know what will happen if you do.
Skokey sighed uncomfortably, "Fine. Anything else I should know?"
To prove that I am his, he must recognize me. I never danced or played, because he did not allow me. So you are not to dance, or laugh, or play. You will sit, or walk about it you choose. You will not trot or run, either, unless he is running and you can't keep up. That will be enough to prove it is me.
"Are you telling me, I can't leave at all, and I can't have any fun while I'm here?"
That is correct.
"Not even if my friends are begging me?"
Do you have somewhere to be?
"Yeah, I kinda have a mate and two newborns waiting for me at home. It would be real nice if I could see them sometime soon!"
If the Dark Lord wishes to go where your home resides, then your problem is solved.
Skokey growled and stomped his hooves, but soon sighed. "I guess I don't have a choice, do I?"
I suppose not.
"Can't you find someone else? I'm not used to this."
No, I cannot. Or, at least, I choose not to. It's a long process. To get in and to get out.
"Fair enough..." Skokey looked at the ground. "Can I at least talk to someone to let my family know what's happening?"
Of course. I will remain silent now, until he notices you. If he speaks, you will let me speak.
"Sure..." Skokey almost trotted, but then he remembered. He walked, all the way to the Oak. He found that the giant had awoken.
Skokey blinked, and stared at the zombie. I can't believe that thing had a lover. he thought, in a distasteful tone. The giant let out a low, unsettling moan, causing nauxious, thick breath to escape his skull. Skokey shivered all over at the sound. It was five times worse than the regular skull mask.
The zombie paid no mind to Skokey at all, and made for the Twin Gods statue. Skokey trotted to keep up with the beast, and stopped when he sat down to sleep once more. He stared at the candles, and sighed. I guess I'm the one for the job... He lowered his antlers to every candle, setting the wick aflame.
Skokey promptly sat amid the candles, infront of the statue. He waited patiently for his next awakening, so that maybe this dreadful ghost could finally leave him.
