He is hungry.

But it is pouring.
He can't stand it, terror, cold raining, and it is dark

crying bats, screeching, he hates the flutter of their wings.

By the time it stops, he is already soaked and shaken.

He does not dare leave the tall dry grass to eat without a companion now.

his ears droop, then prick.

There is another in the grass.

She is a pretty doe, though she seems injured.
He cowers

for he is still frightened of her.

But she seems like, she could be kind, for she is small, and she is very shy, cowering as he does, and both sprint different ways.

He will be brave, he will say 'Hello!' to this little cowering doe, and Brown-Stag Virgil will be proud and---

She rears.

His heart nearly bursts from his chest, eyes, wide, ears back.

And he runs, he runs and runs.

And runs.

until his little legs buckle.
and his little lungs hurt.

And he simply cannot run, any longer.

He will never dare get near her again, and it will be a long time before he dares attempt to greet another...

He is alone.

And...

He is hungry
