Firefly

[This is just a sorta short story I wrote centering around an optimistic fawn that suffers from memory loss and the wolf that raised him his entire life. While it doesn't go indepth on their history, it centers more around the importance of memories, a deep friendship (OHNO NOT FRIENDSHIP) and having to let someone go. I'm not the best writer, but meh.]

The rain pounded the ground as the night began to come to an unknown forest. The trees swayed in the heavy freeze, and the temperature seemed to sink further and further down. Lightning flashed in the sky, creating a eerie feel in the quieting silence. The forest critters scurried to their dens with their young, not wanting them to fall ill from the bad weather. The atmosphere, though dark, was silent... though, deep within the forest, it was but all peaceful.

A young fawn, pelt smeared with sogging mud, ran a distance ahead of a silver pelted wolf, terrified down to the core of what the extremely large predator could do if it got a hold of him. He could remember what his mother had told him about wolves... though he couldn't remember where she was. His sides heaving, he stopped and noticed a tree with a hole in it; it was his perfect chance to hide!

Squeezing himself in the tree, he curled himself into a ball, hearing the wolf's steps getting closer. They soon stopped, and he was so close to letting out a sigh of relief. "You ain't foolin' anyone with this, kid." he heard the gruff voice call... "Now come on out. You know I ain't gonna hurt you."

The fawn was so confused; the wolf's voice sounded so familiar, but he couldn't remember... he just couldn't. Why? He felt himself getting frustrated right away, the tears were just an aftereffect. He turned himself around, not wanting to deal with the wolf waiting outside; the wolf wasn't going to let it go, however. The fawn felt fangs gripping his back leg, pulling him out. His instinct to struggle immediately came. 'Wolves are killers,' the fawn thought to himself, 'he wants to kill me!'

The wolf however, let go right away. Now, this young deer got a good look at his 'attacker'.

He looked tired, and it was obvious he'd been through many battles in his day. His amber eyes slanted upward, giving him a saddened appearance, his silver muzzle had specks of black mixing in, his whiskers were apparent. His fur was shaggy, uneven, and it gave him the appearance of having hair drooping in his face. This wolf... was old. But even though he was old, the fawn could see a sparkle of youth in his eyes and... the warmth of a parent's eyes. Why?

With a chuckle, the wolf pulled in the fawn for a hug; he certainly didn't fight back. But he was so CONFRUSED. What was going on?

"You forgot again, kid," the wolf said to him, "it's me, Kenta. And your name is Xylon."

"Xylon..." the fawn said his name for probably the hundredth time. He began to remember small details of his life from the little information he just received; he remembered Kenta and how nice he was, he remembered how he hated flowers but how he liked the atmosphere around them. He liked knowing this a lot, though he was disappointed at having forgotten it again. "I'm sorry, Kenta. I... I always forget everything. I tried though, I tried so hard."

"Keh. At least you remembered, right?"

"But... I've been running from you for like an hour now."

There came the awkward silence. It always seemed to occur right after Xylon remembered something, heck, it even happened when he didn't forget anything.

"A-anyway. We should get goin. We gotta find you some deer to be with." Kenta'd gone right back to his state of manliness after convincing the fawn that he was no threat. He strode off, Xylon sticking close to him. "I can't have you growin up to be a carnivore. With your appetite, you'd probably eat a wolf my size for just one course. And that ain't healthy for any forest." He was all too serious.

The young deer smiled subconsciously, hopping ahead of his companion. Smiling was a reaction for him at this point, his positive attitude seemed to be all he had. "You exaggerate too much." he laughed at the old wolf, spotting a flower field a distance ahead of them; he was really quick to investigate. The field smelled vivid and calming to Xylon, even though he couldn't stand looking at the flowers. He glared at them with a passion, yet he decided to lie down right in the middle of them.

"You make no type of sense, kid. You complain about those damn flowers and yet you decide to take naps in them."

The rain had long since passed and both creatures hadn't noticed. The moon began to appear overhead, and the forest glistened in the appearing moonlight. The nocturnal beasts began to awake, the forest began to fill with what little noises they made. Insects that were hiding from the storm also came out, namely the fireflies; they were a rare sight in this forest.

They gathered in the small field of glistening flowers, around the two animals lying there for a rest. The glowing specks seemed to circle them, some occasionally landing on either Kenta's head or Xylon's sprouting antlers. Both watched the bright insects intently, in awe of the beauty. What added to it was the faint glow of Kenta's own eyes that were adapting to the darkness and the fireflies that danced around the glow.

"They look like those things... those 'candles', Kenta." Xylon found himself whispering, remembering a patch of candles he'd seen during their travels together.

"You're right. Maybe you should pick some to put in your antlers when you grow up. Then you'd be one too. A firefly, I mean."

He thought about deeply; he'd sure love to have those candles sitting on his adult antlers. He could imagine traveling with Kenta and being able to see in the darkness too. It made him happy. The two soon fell asleep among the flowers and fireflies with the skies clearing above them.

The sun soon rose over the horizon, warming the forest that had been dampened and cooled from the last night's rain. Xylon soon rose to his feet, yawning a barely audible 'Good morning'. However, there was no one there. The fawn tilted his head in confusion; where had his friend gone? He walked a few steps, hoping this was a joke.

"Kenta?" he called endlessly. "Where are you, Kenta? This isn't funny!"

He soon realized that this was no joke, and that he'd really been left on his own. The feeling of being alone quickly came to him, and he found himself lying in the flower field again, staring at some fireflies that had died last night. He felt sorry for them, though he didn't know why they actually died. "I'm sorry we overworked you guys so much..." He bowed to the small creatures, and he soon noticed a subtle glow rising from them; he ignored it and went back to his moping.

In the distance, Kenta watched Xylon, turning to a grey stag who was battle scarred and probably as old as Kenta was. Kenta's amber eyes grew cold and detached while speaking to the stag; he could no longer interfere. He wanted his fawn companion to grow up in the proper environment with deer and not just with him. "Yamahiko, I'm leaving him in your care. He's... quite a kid. Hyperactive, cheerful. If you tell him I sent him, I'm sure you'll be all set."

The stag nodded at him, "You raised him well though, Kentamaru." Yamahiko said, looking at the fawn still lying in the flower field. He could clearly see the small glows the deceased fireflies emitted shooting of into the sky, and he knew Kenta could as well. "His sanguine spirit turns every firefly into a star..."

In the field, Xylon was watching the glows as well, and he watched intently. He didn't want to forget anymore; he wanted to remember the fireflies, Kenta and everything. "Fireflies..." he whispered to himself, remember what Kenta had said to him. Hopping up, he looked around frantically and conveniently found a patch of candles lying on the ground. He picked up a few, balancing them on his antler stubs and found himself smiling sadly.

"Now..." Xylon paused, wanting to complete his sentence but finding himself unable to. The words wouldn't come out.

Yamahiko walked up from behind, hovering near the younger deer. He finished his sentence for him,

"Now you're a firefly too."

I'm definitely not the best

I'm definitely not the best writer. I repeat a lot of words and get lazy in the middle of a story. lol

But thank you, I'm glad you liked it. (:
