Totally outstanding...the idea to use a gem is very ambitious, but you've done a great job!
As for looking too evil, I think you're right in that it does give off a very 'dark power' vibe, because the red stands out so starkly against the black. The glowing red tribal designs also add that sort of 'dark magic' feel, so maybe if you tweaked them to be more natural, like cracks in a crystal as opposed to geometric shapes.
All I know is that I love this design, I hope you consider doing some more gem themed ones in the future!
